Year of the Dragon King: Slot Overview
Wikipedia notes that the dragon is the fifth animal in the 12-year cycle that forms the Chinese zodiac alongside the Chinese calendar. 2024 was a Year of the Dragon, and the same happens every 12 years either side. In places where the Chinese zodiac is widely followed, birth rates reportedly rise, as some people believe ‘Dragon babies’ are fortunate and have characteristics linked to greater success in life. It would be fascinating to see solid data that supports or challenges that idea—or maybe this is one of those topics science is better off not poking at. Either way, we’ve got Year of the Dragon King, an online slot from Pragmatic Play and Reel Kingdom.
Year of the Dragon King is, as you’d expect, an Asian-themed slot packed with familiar genre imagery. Think misty rocky mountains, lanterns, coins, and yes—dragons. That said, there may be fewer dragons than some players would hope for, with little to none showing up during the base game, so draco-files will need to wait until the bonus feature triggers to get their fill.

First up, pick your stake from 10 c to $/€250 per paid round. After that, you can switch on the ante bet if you want to push your luck, as it increases the bet by 50% to double the chance of landing the bonus feature. You’ll also want to be ready for a highly volatile ride, rated 5 out of 5, with a default RTP of 96.08% regardless of how you play Year of the Dragon King.
The reel set-up is 5-reels with 3 rows, and it runs on 20 paylines. Winning combinations pay left to right, beginning on the leftmost reel. The low symbols are Ten through Ace, and they return 2 to 3 times the bet for a 5 OAK. Lanterns and coins are the two premium symbols, paying 10 to 25 times the bet for five of a kind. Wilds appear on all reels, substitute for any standard paying symbol, and carry the same value as the coin symbol.
Year of the Dragon King: Slot Features

Year of the Dragon King may feature dragons, but it doesn’t exactly come loaded with features. There’s the Mini Slot Machine bonus, plus a set of bonus buy options.
Mini Slot Machine Bonus
Randomly, during a spin, the background behind certain reels may turn green, blue, or red. If all reels turn the same colour, the Mini Slot Machine bonus is triggered. When the feature begins, 1 to 5 mini slot machines appear on the grid. Each mini slot then spins, awarding prizes for any winning combinations it lands. Whenever a win hits, that specific mini slot earns another spin. If a non-winning spin lands, that mini slot becomes locked. Once every mini slot is locked, the feature finishes.
Each mini slot machine has a single payline and can land blanks, blue 8s, yellow 8s, or red 8s. Any line of matching-colour 8s pays 1x the bet, 3 blue 8s pay 2x the bet, 3 yellow 8s pay 5x the bet, and 3 red 8s pay 20x the bet. Based on the colour of the reels that triggered the feature in the base game, every mini slot also receives a multiplier:
- A 5 green reel trigger – mini slots have a multiplier starting at x1 for the first spin, increasing by +1 for subsequent winning spins. The multiplier applies to all wins for that mini slot machine.
- A 5 blue reel trigger – mini slots have a multiplier starting at x2 for the first spin, increasing by +2 for subsequent winning spins. The multiplier applies to all wins for that mini slot machine.
- A 5 red reel trigger – mini slots have a multiplier starting at x5 for the first spin, increasing by +5 for subsequent winning spins. The multiplier applies to all wins for that mini slot machine.
Buy Bonus
If you’re desperate to jump straight into the mini-slot action, you can purchase the bonus round with 5 green, blue, or red reels for 60x, 140x, or 350x the bet, respectively. Alternatively, for 100x the bet, the bonus triggers with randomly selected reel colours. No matter which option you choose, you’ll receive 1 to 5 mini slot machines.

Year of the Dragon King: Slot Verdict
It felt a bit unusual to be looking at an Asian-themed Reel Kingdom slot that wasn’t tied to the Floating Dragon series. Year of the Dragon King was a slightly odd release in general—not in a wildly bizarre way, but it does things a little differently from the norm. It also brought 8 Golden Dragon Challenge to mind (also from Reel Kingdom), since that title likewise revolves around a bonus made up of multiple mini slots that keep spinning and paying until a spin fails to produce a win, at which point the non-winning mini slot locks. Another distant echo came from The Reel King range, thanks to the somewhat similar idea of reels lighting up to trigger a bonus alongside a mini-slot component.
As for Year of the Dragon King itself, it’s probably easiest to gloss over the base game, which felt fairly uneventful and short on standout moments. The Mini Slot Machine bonus didn’t exactly deliver constant fireworks either, but it’s at least where the game’s top prize of 5,000x the bet becomes theoretically achievable. It won’t be simple, though having all 5 mini slots running at the same time should improve the odds. The concept was interesting at first, yet after watching the mini reels spin a handful of times, the freshness faded rather quickly.
That said, Year of the Dragon King was genuinely entertaining when several mini slots were active at once, especially when the feature was triggered by red reels to secure the strongest multiplier progression. Even so, the way Year of the Dragon King is built makes it very much a love-it-or-leave-it kind of slot.
