Wild Depths: Slot Overview
Wild Depths is a sea-themed adventure from Pragmatic Play, offering a harmless-looking backdrop for players to take a trip under the waves. More specifically, it’s a cartoon take on ocean life in the spirit of Finding Nemo, where the locals pose little to no threat. Visually, it also shares a few notes with Relax Gaming’s Deep Descent, which didn’t make much of an impact. As for gameplay, Wild Depths comes equipped with a set of mechanics that are straightforward individually but can mesh nicely together: multiplier wilds, roaming wilds, respins, free spins, and a progressive win multiplier.
Once you dive in, Wild Depths isn’t especially intense thematically. It’s not particularly “deep” either, since everything is brightly lit by sunrays cutting through the water, highlighting purple rocks, seaweed, and a pale sandy seabed. It’s the kind of place where even sharks would likely be vegetarian, and on each respin, a big-eyed orange fish blasts a trumpet-like thing to set the reels in motion. Overall, Wild Depths feels pleasantly quirky and makes for an easygoing session.
If you’re expecting a catch, it’s that the math model is far less relaxed than the scenery suggests. Volatility is the main reason, rated 5 out 5, so it’s clearly on the high end. RTP is strong on the default setting at 96.48%, and players can expect to reach the bonus game every 120 spins on average, in theory. This underwater trip can be played on any device, with stakes ranging from 20 p/c to $/€100 per spin.
Set on a 5-reel, 4-row layout, the game uses 40 paylines for wins of at least three matching symbols across. The paytable sticks to the bright, bubbly vibe, featuring chunky neon 10-A royals as low pays, three shellfish as the mid-tier, and three happy-looking fish as the premium symbols. Five-of-a-kind combinations pay 1-1.5x for lows, 2.5-5x for mids, and 7.5-20x the bet for premium symbols. Wilds are central to landing bigger hauls in Wild Depths. They show up on all but the first reel and substitute for every symbol except the scatter. Wilds always come with a multiplier of x2, applied to all winning combinations they help create. If a win uses more than one wild, the multiplier values multiply between each other.
Wild Depths: Slot Features
Wild symbols also feed into a couple of additional mechanics: roaming wilds and respins, along with a progressive multiplier that only comes into play once the free spins bonus round is triggered.
Roaming Wilds
Any time a wild symbol hits in the base game, it stays on the reels. On the next paid spin, it shifts up one position on its reel until it eventually disappears off-screen. If you change the bet while wilds are still visible, they’re cleared away, meaning the next paid spin begins without the roaming wild present.
Free Spins
The pearl in oyster symbol serves as the scatter and can land on all reels. Hitting 3, 4, or 5 of them pays 2x, 15x, or 100x the total bet and awards 6, 9, or 12 free spins. During free spins, whenever a wild symbol lands, it triggers the same roaming wild/respins sequence described above. On top of that, each time a respin occurs, a win multiplier increases by +1. This multiplier applies to all respin wins, then resets once the respin sequence ends and all wilds have moved off the grid. Scatters remain on the reels during the bonus, and landing 3 of them grants 5 additional free spins with no limit.
Wild Depths: Slot Verdict
Wild Depths is the kind of game that’s so relentlessly nice it’s difficult to dislike. It’s easy to see why studios like Pixar keep winning audiences over year after year—make something this charming and someone is bound to be taken in by it. The colourful underwater world and upbeat Caribbean soundtrack do a lot of the heavy lifting right away. Better still, Wild Depths supports its friendly presentation with a handful of solid features that work well on their own and can boost each other once the bonus round is in play.
You likely won’t be waiting forever to see the bonus either, since the 1 in 120 spins average is less intimidating than what Pragmatic Play sometimes delivers—though that can also mean the average payout is reduced. Where things get more interesting is the respin feature, especially once the win multiplier is added into the mix. It’s a shame the multiplier doesn’t extend into standard free spins or carry over to the next respin trigger. Even so, Wild Depths can still produce fun sequences as it stands. The fact that wild multipliers multiply each other rather than adding together can be a strong combination, but in the review wilds often appeared on single reels. Or, when multiple reels had wilds, it might be something like reels 2 and 5, which makes linking them difficult. In short, don’t rely too heavily on wild multipliers stacking often.
In certain respects, Wild Depths didn’t come across as extremely volatile thanks to how regularly free spins seemed to trigger. That said, bonus round returns were fairly modest, and the base game featured plenty of dead spins. Then again, it’s possible we simply encountered Wild Depths on a quiet run. The win potential is there on paper, and Pragmatic Play has set a 5,000x win cap to stop anyone from hauling up too massive a treasure from the ocean.
If you enjoy games that look cute on the surface but have a bit of bite underneath, Wild Depths is worth checking out. It’s well produced, packed with cheerful energy, and you never quite know whether you’ve hooked a guppy—or something with sharper teeth—at the end of the line.
