Ternion: Slot Overview

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the term ‘ternion’ means ‘a set or group of three’, and Ternion, the online slot from Swedish games maker Play’n GO, definitely leans into that idea. Here, the trio is made up of three superheroes—seemingly original characters rather than anything tied to Marvel, DC, or another comic-book universe. With very little lore to go on, the lineup looks to be an Ice Lady, a Blade Lady, and a Fire Man, or something close to that. What’s much easier to pin down is the gameplay: players can expect three modifiers, one connected to each hero, plus Doomsday Free Spins where those modifiers become ‘more powerful’.

Whether the city is meant to be Gotham, Metropolis, New York, or somewhere else entirely is about as unclear as the game’s backstory, but it’s definitely an urban landscape full of skyscrapers. Either we’re dropping in on a particularly grim weather day—storm clouds rolling in, ready to soak the streets—or… there’s something darker building in the distance. Oddly, even after seeing both phases—base game and bonus round—it’s still hard to tell who the villain is, or if there even is one. Maybe the heroes are eco-warriors. Maybe they’re the bad guys. Plenty left unanswered.

To start digging into it, players can jump in on tablet, mobile, or desktop and choose a stake of 20 p/c to $/€100 per spin. This is a highly volatile slot with noticeable swings, and it also comes with multiple RTP configurations, with the highest sitting around 96.20%. In terms of setup, the action plays out on a 5-reel, 4-row grid, with 20 paylines available for forming winning combinations.

Across all symbol types, wins are paid for lines made up of three to five-of-a-kind. Landing five matching symbols returns 1.5 to 2.5 times the stake for 10-A payouts, or 5 to 50 times the bet for the crystal, ice lady, blade lady, and fire man symbols. The V/W-shaped golden icon acts as the wild and can appear on every reel. Wilds replace all symbols except the scatter, and any winning wild combinations pay the same as the male hero symbol.

Ternion: Slot Features

Somewhat reminiscent of Moon Princess in concept, Ternion’s three heroes each come with their own modifier, which can randomly trigger during the base game. These and their effects are:

  • Ice Shards – ice spreads across random positions on the board, creating 3 to 10 wilds.
  • Blade Flurry – clears all low-paying symbols from the reels, and high pays fall in to take their place.
  • Pillars of Flame – makes 1 to 4 reels completely wild.

Doomsday Free Spins

The other key icon is the gold Rolex-looking scatter, which can land on all five reels. Getting 3, 4, or 5 scatters in the base game triggers 8, 10, or 14 Doomsday Free Spins, respectively. Potentially making the trigger easier, the Call For Heroes feature may activate in the base game, dropping 2 scatters onto the first two reels. During the bonus round, landing 3, 4, or 5 scatters adds 4, 5, or 7 additional free spins, respectively. In total, players can win up to 38 free spins in total.

As noted earlier, during free spins the three hero features become ‘more powerful’, and if wilds ever land on top of each other, the multiplier increases by +1. On top of that, crystal symbols are collected whenever they appear in free spins. For every 5 crystals collected, hero superpowers are granted. The higher the level you reach, the more heroes can be called in at once.

Ternion: Slot Verdict

Ternion turned out to be a surprisingly slippery ride to pin down in a review. It often felt unpredictable: at times it barely did anything except drain the balance; then suddenly it would start unleashing features like Cyclops taking off his ruby quartz eyewear. Thankfully, no one needs to put on protective glasses to try Ternion, though. Visually, it’s another strong-looking release from the Play’n GO team, packed with polished artwork and three heroes with daytime-TV-level good looks. The audio didn’t always match the visuals, however—during Doomsday Free Spins in particular, the fast but tinny soundtrack seemed to sap momentum rather than build it.

Still, when the features did show up, they sometimes compensated for any audio-visual excitement gaps—even if those moments didn’t happen constantly. One of the highlights was seeing the fire guy’s Pillars of Flame feature land four fully wild reels. With the first four reels turning wild in that moment, the outcome was pretty decent. And Ternion’s overall potential isn’t shabby either, topping out at 11,111 times the bet. Why that oddly specific figure? Hard to say—just another piece of the Ternion puzzle.

By the finish, Ternion had offered a real mix of highs and lows, leaving a generally positive impression, though not one that truly grabbed hold. It’s the sort of Play’n GO release that looks great and brings some interesting mechanics, but doesn’t quite have the knockout element to elevate it further. Play’n GO clearly knows its craft, yet it can feel like the studio is happy delivering consistently above-average slots rather than pushing for something that sparks a ‘wow, what the fudge is this?’ reaction. A bit more emphasis on quality over quantity might go a long way.
