Spartan King: Slot Overview
Pragmatic Play takes players back in time with Spartan King, a slot inspired by Leonidas and his famed group of 300 warriors. The game never outright says it, but it’s hard not to think of the film/graphic novel 300 when playing titles like this—much like NextGen’s well-known 300 Shields and its sequel 300 Shields Extreme. On the surface, the two can look alike. Once you start spinning, however, the experience heads in a different direction, and not really in Spartan King’s favor.
When the game loads, you’re met by the bright coastline of the Peloponnesus, plus an angry-looking warrior shouting from under a crested helmet—presumably the Spartan King. Right away, Pragmatic Play’s tough, battle-ready tone comes through. The 5×4, 40-payline layout sits in front of a purple, rippling Mediterranean Sea with fields, waterfalls, and mountains behind it.
It’s an attractive backdrop, and it does make you wonder why the Spartans didn’t spend more time relaxing in all that natural abundance instead of drilling for war. Probably for the best, since “good vibes” wouldn’t have helped much against the 100,000 invaders at Thermopylae. Bronze, muscle, and determination slowed the Persian push—along with plenty of spirit, some of which Pragmatic Play channels into the cinematic soundtrack.
Spartan King runs on all devices and lets you wager from 20 p/c to $/€100 per spin. Pragmatic Play rates the math model as highly volatile, giving it the maximum 5 out of 5. During testing, free spins appeared more often than expected, though the returns were only average. The default RTP is also notably strong at 96.6%, even if in today’s market it can be difficult to find that exact setting in some regions. A respectable win potential (at least on paper) rounds out a decent set of stats—though the gameplay doesn’t quite live up to them.
There are 8 pay symbols in total, and they fit the theme nicely. The lower values are J-A card royals; they don’t use the sharp Greek-style lettering you often see in games like this, but the gold edging still looks fine. Above them are 4 premium symbols: swords, helms, ships, and a warrior caught mid-swing. Landing five of these top symbols on a payline awards 4 to 7.5 times your stake. Assisting with line hits is the 1×1 Spartan King wild, which substitutes for any pay symbol and pays up to 20x the bet for five of a kind. This wild can appear on reels 2, 3, 4, and 5.
Spartan King: Slot Features

True to its name, Spartan King keeps the feature set fairly minimal. Everything centers on a special multiplier wild. Shaped like a shield, it appears as a 2×2 symbol and can land anywhere on the reels, substituting for any paying symbol, with an added function during free spins.
The free spins feature plays very similarly to the base game, with one key twist. To trigger it, you need 3 or more red flag scatter symbols to land. When they do, 3, 4, or 5 scatters award 8, 10, or 12 free spins, plus a payout of 1x, 5x, or 20x the bet, respectively. During free spins, the 2×2 shield wild can drop in at any time to substitute just as it does in the base game. The change is that when one or more appear, the value of any win is multiplied by a random x2, x3, x5, x10, or x25.
Spartan King: Slot Verdict
If you’re drawn to Ancient Greece-style themes, Spartan King has a few things going for it. Visually, it’s decent, and the Mediterranean setting adds a bit of escapism to the reels. The theme is also put together well. Sparta isn’t exactly a fresh idea in slots—or anywhere else, for that matter. Still, there’s something about that warrior culture that continues to resonate, with their tales retold in different forms for almost 2,500 years. That fascination doesn’t seem likely to fade, so deeply are the 300 embedded in the Southern European imagination.
But once the spinning starts, the initial excitement tends to drop off—much like Xerxes’ confidence over time. Spartan King is fine to play, yet it doesn’t spark the imagination as much as the subject matter suggests it should. The standout element is the 2×2 shield wilds. At one point, three landed together in the base game and delivered a nice win, though seeing that many at once is uncommon. Naturally, the shield wilds are more effective in free spins, where a strong multiplier can make a real difference. They can also be a bit annoying, since the multiplier animation triggers whether there’s a win on the screen or not. Regarding maximum payouts, Pragmatic Play states that wins of over 7,480x the bet are possible, where a flood of those shield multipliers would certainly help—but as we’ve seen before, claimed max wins in Pragmatic slots can be heavily overstated.
Overall, Spartan King isn’t among the most thrilling releases from this studio. The biggest drawbacks are that the different phases don’t feel distinct enough, and a 5×4 game limited to 40 paylines can feel flat unless there’s an extra hook to drive it. Spartan King doesn’t really provide that. And lingering in the background is the sense that Spartans have simply been done better in other slots.
