If there’s a quiet contest to see who can go the most old-school, Space Invaders from Inspired Gaming deserves to be in the running. The developer has clearly drawn from a true trailblazer: Taito’s early shoot ’em up, Space Invaders. In that classic, you slide your ship left and right, firing at waves of aliens as they march down the screen in neat rows. It’s simple—very simple—but Space Invaders still went on to become one of the highest-grossing video games ever.

That legacy made it an obvious candidate for a slot adaptation to ride the retro wave, and that’s where Inspired Gaming comes in. Remember, the original Space Invaders launched back in 1978, so it’s hardly a visual showpiece by today’s standards. The slot keeps the same spirit but adds far more colour, feeling more like a 90s-style refresh than a straight 70s recreation. Visually, it remains an 8-bit playground. The audio hits the mark as well, with that steady, pulsing rhythm and familiar blaster bleeps. The only thing you don’t get is the atmosphere of a dim arcade—or that fast-food scent while you take out a few invaders waiting for your order.

Space Invaders plays out on a 5-reel, 3-row grid, with 20 fixed paylines firing across the screen. It’s a medium-high volatile slot, offering a theoretical return of 95%. Bets run from 20 p/c to $/€200 per spin, and the invasion can be played on any device.

Wins land when matching symbols appear on adjacent reels starting from the leftmost reel, and there are 8 standard pay symbols. The lower-value icons are four chunky invaders, paying 2.5 – 5 times the stake for five of a kind, while the top symbols are three space-themed images plus the game logo. Hitting five premium symbols on a payline returns 10 to 25 times your stake. In addition, wild symbols can land naturally or be introduced through certain features. Either way, wilds substitute for every symbol except the scatter.

Reel Modifiers

In the base game, a UFO can randomly sweep across the top of the reels. A cannon then appears underneath, and if it successfully shoots the UFO, 1 of 5 modifiers is awarded:

• Wild Cannon – a cannon shows up while the reels spin and fires wild symbols onto the middle three reels (2, 3, and 4).
• Monster Wild – any wilds that land afterwards expand to fill every position on their reel.
• 5 Of A Kind! – ensures at least one 5 of a kind win.
• Mega Reel – while the reels are spinning, three combine to form mega 3×3 symbols that land on the left, right or centre.
• Bonus Boost – additional bonus symbols are placed onto the reels for that spin.

On top of those modifiers, 2 more can activate at random after losing base game spins. The UFO modifier projects a beam onto a symbol, growing it to super-size, or a cannon may appear that destroys invader symbols, allowing new symbols to cascade into the empty spaces.

And to add one more twist, there’s also a chance after a base game spin that the Lock ‘n Spin Invasion modifier kicks in. When it does, all instances of a chosen symbol type lock in place for a respin. The respins keep going until no new copies of that symbol appear.

Bonus Games

Hitting 3 or more bonus coin scatters in the base game triggers the bonus round. A feature wheel then spins to award 1 of 6 bonus games, which can be collected or gambled. Gambling either advances you to the next bonus on the ladder or grants a mystery prize.

• Shoot Out – hit the shoot button to wipe out rows of invaders and earn a bet multiplier.
• UFO Climber – choose UFOs to progress along a path with rising bet multipliers.
• Wild Cannon Free Spins – free spins featuring a cannon that places sticky wilds on the reels.

• Mega Reel Free Spins – free spins with a roaming 3×3 mega reel.
• Space Invaders – watch a round of space invaders to win a bet multiplier. If the screen is cleared a completion bonus prize is also awarded.

When each bonus round finishes, 3 coins appear and you select one. The coin can end the bonus, continue the bonus, or award the Space Invaders feature.

Spin Chance

If your balance falls below the cost of the current spin, you can stake what’s left on the Spin Chance. Win and you’re granted one last spin; lose and the remaining balance is lost.

Space Invaders: Slot Verdict

Much like dropping coins into the original cabinet, Space Invaders the slot lands some shots and misses others. For starters, the 8-bit look isn’t as immediately appealing as something like Hellcatraz, although it can become more enjoyable over time. That’s helped by small details—like the UFO cruising past and the cannon popping up to take a shot. The invader animations have plenty of charm, and the game is packed with nods to the source material that fans should appreciate. It’s difficult to pinpoint exactly why the presentation didn’t fully click for us. It may be that Inspired didn’t commit to a single era, and the blend of 1970s-style invader sprites with later-but-still-old visuals sometimes feels a little uneven. Whatever the reason, Space Invaders doesn’t quite have the smooth, unified style some other recent 8-bit slots have delivered.

Despite clearly taking cues from Blueprint Gaming’s big, feature-heavy titles, the gameplay also came across as oddly lightweight. On the plus side, having a pile of modifiers and bonus games to chase is a strong hook, especially because Inspired has woven so many arcade elements into them. But while they’re entertaining at first, a few of the bonus games lose their spark when you’ve seen them multiple times. Even so, if you’re fond of retro themes or you played the original, working your way through the bonus selection could still be a tempting goal. As for winnings, the lower bonus games aren’t built for huge results, and the higher tiers don’t really push massive hits either. The maximum payout is €/$250,000 or 1,250x the max bet.

Once the familiar touches have been spotted and you’ve had that moment of appreciation for how far visuals, sound, and effects have come since 1978—while still tipping the hat to Space Invaders’ role in gaming history—there wasn’t a strong urge to jump back in. Space Invaders definitely has its highlights, and fans should enjoy the nostalgia trip. Still, after the features have been explored, our interest gradually—and a little disappointingly—faded.
