Santa’s Wonderland: Slot Overview
Pragmatic Play gets into the festive spirit with a Christmas-themed slot titled Santa’s Wonderland. True to form, the studio has taken an existing release—Gems Bonanza—and dressed it up with a holiday reskin. It isn’t a total one-to-one replica, as a few rules and figures have been tweaked, but most of what’s here will feel very familiar, so if you’ve played one, you’ll instantly recognize the other.
In Santa’s Wonderland, the spotlight is on presents—specifically toys—and, as the title suggests, the action seems to be set inside Santa’s workshop at some point in the production line. Likely right near the end, judging by the heaps of ribboned parcels waiting to be packed onto Santa’s sleigh for its one-night worldwide run. Pragmatic Play has put together a pleasant festive scene, although the display is dominated by a large 8×8 sized grid filled with knick-knacks, with a feature clock, a meter, and a bonus buy button framing the action. Busy, but cozy in a Christmas sort of way.
Santa’s Wonderland uses a cluster-pay grid, paying out when 5 matching symbols land next to each other horizontally or vertically. Any winning cluster sets off the tumble feature, clearing those symbols so new ones (or existing ones above) can drop in and fill the spaces. This can chain into further cluster wins from the same spin, stopping only when no additional wins form. One noticeable difference versus Gems Bonanza is the lower RTP, trimmed from 96.51% down to 96.23%. The game still runs on a highly volatile model, though the maximum win has also been cut. Not exactly a festive gift, but that’s the deal. Anyone who still wants to challenge the big guy can play on any device with stakes from 20 p/c to $/€100 per spin.
The paytable is packed with toys and ornaments, beginning with blue, green, red, and orange decoration low pays that return 5 to 12.5x the bet for clusters of 20-24 symbols. The higher-paying icons are toy planes, trains, and teddy bears, paying 25 to 100x your stake for a 20-24 symbol cluster. Rounding out the symbol set is the fluffy-bearded Santa wild. Wild Santas can land anywhere and substitute for all symbols. They don’t appear naturally, though, only through the Wild Santa or Lucky Santa features. Wilds may also link with multiple symbol types at once to help complete clusters.
Santa’s Wonderland: Slot Features
Supporting the cluster-pay tumble mechanic is a set of snowflake modifiers plus a Midnight Riches Meter, which can launch players into a 5-level bonus sequence once enough winning symbols have been gathered.
Snowflake Modifiers
At the start of each new spin, 5 snowflakes are placed in random grid positions underneath the standard symbols. If a winning cluster lands over a snowflake, its corresponding modifier activates after the current tumble chain finishes.
- Blue Snowflake – Awards Refresh. The grid is cleared of all symbols except wilds, and new symbols tumble onto the screen.
- Purple Snowflake – Awards Wild Santa. All instances of the same symbol type are transformed into wilds.
- Yellow Snowflake – Awards Blocks. Random 2×2 sized blocks of the same symbol type are added in random positions on the board.
- Red Snowflake – Awards Supersize. A random block of 3×3, 4×4, or 5×5 of the same symbol is added to the grid.
- Green Snowflake – Awards Lucky Santa. Adds 5 to 15 wild symbols to the screen in random positions.
When multiple snowflakes are triggered on a single spin, they resolve in the exact order shown above.
Midnight Riches Progressive Feature
With every spin, the total of winning symbols is collected into the Midnight Riches meter. After 140 symbols have been collected, the Midnight Riches feature begins. It starts on level 1, where all the spin modifiers listed earlier can activate once per level, and all wins are multiplied by 3. As players keep collecting winning symbols during Midnight Riches, they can climb through the levels as follows:
- Collect 116 winning symbols to activate level 2 which plays with an x6 multiplier.
- Collect 120 winning symbols to activate level 3 which plays with an x9 multiplier.
- Collect 124 winning symbols to activate level 4 which plays with an x12 multiplier.
- Collect 132 winning symbols to activate level 5 which plays with an x15 multiplier.
Midnight Riches finishes if you fail to collect enough symbols to reach the next level, or once all spin features from level 5 have been used.
Buy Midnight Riches
By paying 100x the stake, players can purchase the Midnight Riches feature directly from the base game. The same five levels can still be advanced through using the collection targets listed above.
Santa’s Wonderland: Slot Verdict
If there’s one character who should be worried about population growth, it has to be Santa Claus. The world reached its first billion people around 1800, and only 200 years later it had climbed to 7 billion. If things keep going this way, how is he supposed to cram all those gifts into his sack—never mind find the time to visit everyone? Maybe it’s the classic movie trick where a normal-looking bag is actually enchanted and opens into endless space, like Hermione’s magic bag in Harry Potter?
Back in the real world, Pragmatic Play likely made a smart call by using Gems Bonanza as the foundation for Santa’s Wonderland. Christmas slots aren’t often built around cluster-pay grid gameplay, so having another option in that style could be a nice addition for the holiday season. It’s also a fun enough pick, with a bonus that can feel like a proper ride as it ramps through the levels when the wins keep coming.
The biggest drawback is that the adjustments don’t really feel very festive. Symbol values are lower, the features require more winning symbols to trigger, the RTP has dropped, and the overall potential is clearly reduced. Pragmatic has pulled the max win down from Gem Bonanza‘s 10,000x to the 7,500x available in Santa’s Wonderland. Taken together, it comes off like something Scrooge might do—before his change of heart.
Even if reworking an older title isn’t the boldest creative move, Gems Bonanza wasn’t exactly groundbreaking either, following a formula seen from studios like Play’n GO and leaning heavily on collecting winning symbols to unlock features. Still, Santa’s Wonderland remains a solid grid slot that can deliver some satisfying, Santa-flavored entertainment.
