Rainbow Wilds Megaways: Slot Overview
Among Iron Dog Studio’s earlier releases was a charming, Celtic-leaning slot packed with elves called Rainbow Wilds (2018). The title clearly lent itself to an update, and the studio has effectively reimagined it by licensing the Megaways engine from BTG. Some players may groan at the prospect of yet another Irish-themed game, but Rainbow Wilds Megaways breaks from the usual formula in a few notable ways. For starters, it doesn’t lean too heavily on leprechauns, instead blending in fantasy touches that make it feel more distinctive.
Built around 6 reels, the game adds variety through its enchanted woodland backdrop, home to ‘noble elks and elves of the night‘. Gnarled, twisting trees border the reels, with red-capped mushrooms sitting in the foreground. The scene still evokes Ireland, but with a more mystical take on Celtic folklore. Iron Dog makes an effort to show there’s more to Irish flavour than shamrocks and Guinness. A leprechaun does show up, though he feels more like a marketing mascot than the true centrepiece. If you’re hoping for a classic leprechaun-led experience, you may be let down—don’t expect him to prance around throwing reel modifiers into play like he often does elsewhere.
The original Rainbow Wilds was a high-volatility slot, and Iron Dog has dialled it up further, labelling the volatility as ‘very high‘. That comes with meaningful upside, alongside a default RTP of 95.82% – increasing to 96.3% if you use either feature buy. This fantasy journey runs smoothly on any device, with stakes adjustable from 10 p/c to $/€50.
Symbol-wise, the forest creeps around the 10-A low pays, which return up to 1.5 x the bet. Higher-paying icons include horseshoes, Claddagh rings, beer mugs, elves, elks, and leprechauns. Landing six-of-a-kind with these character symbols pays out 5 to 10 times your stake.
Rainbow Wilds Megaways: Slot Features

The feature set is built around free spins and three separate wild types: a standard wild, a mushroom wild, and sticky wilds. Each behaves differently, though all can replace paying symbols to help form winning combinations. The real engine driving gameplay, however, is the cascade system, where winning symbol groups are removed so fresh symbols can fall into place. This can trigger multiple tumbles in a row, which is also how extra spins are unlocked, as explained below. Megaways changes how many symbols appear on each reel, ranging from 2 to 7, creating up to 117,649 ways to win at maximum. With the reel layout shifting every spin, the outcome stays as unpredictable as Megaways is known for.
Wilds play a major role here too, and there are 3 variants:
- Regular wilds can land in the base game or free spins on reels 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6, and they carry a win multiplier of x1. Multiple can appear in the same spin.
- Just one Mushroom wild may appear at a time on reels 3 or 4 in the base game or free spins. When it hits, it can generate up to 3 mushroom wilds across reels 2-5. Regular wild multipliers increase by 1 if a mushrooming wild grows on the same reel.
- The final type, Sticky wilds show up only during free spins on reels 2-4. Sticky wild multipliers begin at x1 and rise by 1 with every consecutive tumble. They only remain in place during a tumble chain, meaning they disappear between spins.
Free spins trigger after 4 or more consecutive tumbles. Hitting exactly 4 tumbles grants 8 free spins, and every tumble beyond 4 adds 2 extra free spins up to 14. Extra free spins can also be awarded in an unusual two-way system; either 4 consecutive wins gives you 2 additional free spins, with each win after 4 adding one more spin up to 6, or consecutive losses can grant free spins using the same structure.
Alongside any wild multipliers, a global win multiplier also applies, starting at x1 and increasing by +1 after each successful tumble. Unlike the wilds, this win multiplier does not reset between spins. Better still, wild multipliers and the win multiplier are multiplied together, which can significantly improve returns.
At the top of the tumble meter on the left-hand side sits a bonus buy option. Paying 85 times the bet purchases 8 free spins, while 115 times the bet awards 10 free spins.
Rainbow Wilds Megaways: Slot Verdict
It can be difficult not to let out a quiet sigh when yet another leprechaun slot lands on the desk, but Rainbow Wilds Megaways isn’t a straight-up, by-the-numbers Irish game. There’s enough familiar imagery to keep most players in the Celtic mood, while the added fantasy angle makes it harder to pigeonhole. The enchanted forest theme may be a bit much for some, but a change of pace isn’t a bad thing.
Iron Dog seems completely at home with Megaways, and they clearly understand how to steer the mechanic in interesting directions. While Rainbow Wilds Megaways doesn’t stretch the format as far as 1 Million Megaways BC did, it layers in enough extras to feel fairly individual. The mix of wild types—especially sticky and mushroom wilds—paired with the free spins multiplier, can be encouraged into delivering wins up to 12,000x the bet.
That said, the volatility is intense, and some free spin sessions can go by without feeling particularly impactful. It also doesn’t help that Rainbow Wilds Megaways isn’t the most thrilling slot moment-to-moment, even when momentum is building. The visuals and audio don’t always feel in sync, and there’s not much in the way of big-win fanfare to raise the pulse.
Even so, the stats and feature package are solid, so it mostly depends on whether you’re in the mood for a woodland adventure. Leprechauns were always going to be part of it, but it avoids being completely clichéd—credit to Iron Dog for taking a well-worn theme in a slightly different direction.
