With Golden Beauty, Pragmatic returns to the Asian theme they clearly love, and it also leans on mechanics and features that are lifted directly from an older title.

That Mysterious was the exception becomes obvious the moment Golden Beauty boots up. You’re met with the classic Pragmatic interface and a 5 reel, 4 row setup featuring 75 paylines running across the grid. There are a couple of points of interest, including the counter above the reels tied to the Progressive feature we’ll cover shortly. Presentation-wise, it’s polished, even if it resembles many other Asian-themed slots. A traditional Chinese town sits in the background, complete with upturned tiled rooftops and plenty of floating lanterns. The music fits the mood too, rounding out the Eastern atmosphere.

The standout oddity in Golden Beauty is the Progressive feature. In practice, the base game runs in sets of 10 spins. Across those 10 spins, whenever the special Lotus Symbols lands, that spot is highlighted with a frame. Once the 10-spin sequence ends, every framed position is then replaced with a wild symbol, which can substitute for any standard paying symbol. After wins are worked out and paid, the frames disappear and a fresh 10-spin batch begins.

To stop players from trying to game the system, changing the bet during a 10-spin cycle resets the counter back to 1 and wipes any frames from the reels. We noted that the game has a few ideas up its sleeve, but what really makes Golden Beauty feel odd is how derivative it is. If you’ve played Scarab by IGT, Golden Beauty can feel like an uncanny bout of déjà vu. The themes might be worlds apart, yet the features are practically identical. Both use the same 10-spin batch mechanic with framed wild positions, the full-reel premium symbol, and the same free spins rules and selection structure. It’s easy to picture the collective sigh of relief at Pragmatic when Golden Beauty was proposed. After taking a risk and delivering something special with Mysterious, the studio slipped back into its safe space with another Asian-themed slot. That isn’t meant as a cheap shot—more a sense of let-down after seeing what Pragmatic can clearly do when it pushes itself.

Is it worth trying? Possibly, if you’ve ever wanted an Asian-themed take on Scarab. Otherwise, it’s hard to recommend. The 10-spin Progressive feature does create suspense as frames accumulate, but once you start doing the maths, that buzz fades quickly. A full screen of the premium symbol pays 210 times the stake, which isn’t especially “golden” or “beautiful.” The bonus round, with its unlimited retriggers, is where you’re more likely to find respectable returns.
