Gems Bonanza: Slot Overview
Developer Pragmatic Play expands its ever-growing catalogue of grid slots with the Aztec-themed Gems Bonanza. Borrowing ideas from one of the genre’s leading lights, Play’n GO, Gems Bonanza is packed with symbol collection mechanics, meters, modifiers, and plenty of added extras. Beyond grid slots, the studio has also released a number of titles with a South American vibe, with mixed results. Time to see how Gems Bonanza performs.

Pragmatic Play’s grid slots seem to scale up with each new launch, and this one is no exception. The game uses an 8×8 sized play area, with 64 symbols dropping in on every fresh spin. The grid is framed by a furnace-like structure oozing molten gold, while the opposite side shows a top-down glimpse of the temple grounds. Over it all sits synth-forward music that could easily pass as a calming meditation track.
Using the plus and minus controls, you can adjust stakes from 20 p/c to $/€100 per spin across devices. Pragmatic has leaned hard into volatility, scoring it 5/5, so results can swing sharply in either direction. While it may, in theory, pay less frequently on average, it can also deliver long chains of back-to-back wins—exactly the sort of rhythm many players want from a grid slot. RTP is solid too (at the default setting), coming in at a comfortably above-average 96.55%.
A win lands when a cluster—called a block here—of 5 identical symbols connects horizontally or vertically. This activates the tumble mechanic explained below. True to the title, the paytable is overflowing with gems, each a faceted, shiny prize. There are 7 different coloured gemstones, paying 50 to 1,000x the bet for blocks of 25+. Assisting with building clusters is the wild, which doesn’t appear on spins or tumbles. Instead, it is placed onto the grid during the Wild Gem or Lucky Wilds feature, where it can replace any pay symbol.
Gems Bonanza: Slot Features
Pragmatic Play has loaded Gems Bonanza with add-ons, so there’s typically something happening—or about to kick off. Alongside Tumbles, you’ll find Spin Features, Gold Fever, and the bonus buy.
The Tumble feature removes winning symbols from the grid so new ones can fall in from above. If another win forms, the cycle continues, repeating until no further winning clusters appear, after which the next spin begins.
In the base game, special coloured markings can appear at random spots on the board behind the symbols. If a win lands over a marked position, it awards 1 of 5 modifiers, determined by the colour. Each modifier activates once the current tumble chain finishes.
- Blue awards the Nuclear modifier – The entire screen is wiped of symbols, letting a fresh set drop in for another opportunity to win.
- Pink awards Wild Gem – Every instance of one randomly chosen symbol on the grid becomes wild.
- Yellow/brown awards Squares – Random 2×2 blocks made up of the same symbol are placed into random positions on the screen.
- Red marks trigger Colossal Symbols – A random 3×3, 4×4, or 5×5 block of a single symbol is dropped into a random position on the board.
- Green marks award Lucky Wilds – A total of 5 to 15 wilds are added to the grid in random positions.
If multiple features are triggered on the same spin, the modifiers resolve in this sequence – Nuclear, Wild Gem, Squares, Colossal Symbol, and Lucky Wilds.
Next up is the Gold Fever Progressive. Every winning cluster that bursts during tumbles contributes a portion toward the Gold Fever meter shown to the right of the reels. If tumbles stop, the meter resets to zero. But if you collect 114 winning symbols, the meter fills completely, and the Gold Fever Progressive feature begins once the current tumble sequence ends.
The Gold Fever bonus includes five tiers and begins at level one. At each tier, all spin modifiers are played once in a fixed sequence, paired with a win multiplier starting at x2. As symbols keep being collected, filling the Gold Fever meter advances you to the next tier. The key difference is that levels 2, 3, 4, and 5 use win multipliers of x4, x6, x8, and x10, respectively. The bonus ends when all modifiers have been used and you haven’t collected enough symbols to reach the next tier, or when every spin feature from level 5 has been completed.
Lastly, there’s a feature that’s showing up more and more in Pragmatic Play releases: the bonus buy. Paying 100x your current total bet guarantees a full meter on the next spin, immediately triggering the Gold Fever bonus. The feature then runs under the same rules as it would if triggered naturally.
Gems Bonanza: Slot Verdict
Pragmatic Play seems to have taken a close look at what rivals are doing, delivering a grid slot that echoes many familiar ideas. The win tracker and the Gold Fever meter, in particular, carry a noticeable Play’n GO vibe. Even so, if you can overlook the similarities, Gems Bonanza stands up as a strong grid slot. It’s visually appealing (even if the gem-heavy theme can feel a touch impersonal) and it brings plenty to the table.
The standout strength is the pacing, which keeps the gameplay moving smoothly. During testing, Gems Bonanza rarely fell into long stretches where nothing was happening. Much of that comes from the glowing board marks, which frequently awarded modifiers whenever wins landed on them. That said, the modifiers didn’t all feel equally impactful. Nuclear seldom led to much extra momentum—often it simply cleared the grid and then fizzled out. Colossal Symbols could help, especially when higher-value symbols appeared. The most consistently effective option tended to be Lucky Wilds, which could spark a burst of wins and sometimes push the Gold Fever meter over the line into triggering the feature.
The Gold Fever feature itself played out with high volatility. Some rounds barely registered, while others delivered a much more intense run. It also activated fairly often, although progressing beyond level 2 is genuinely difficult. When the larger multipliers come into play, payouts can ramp up quickly, with potential reaching as high as 10,000 times the stake. The upside is certainly there if you can drive the bonus into the later Gold Fever tiers.
Overall, Gems Bonanza is a polished grid slot with enjoyable features and serious upside. It may not be as intricate or refined as the very best in the category, but it’s still an entertaining ride.
