Gem Rush: Slot Overview
Grab your pickaxe and make sure your helmet lamp is working, because it’s time to head underground and smash through rock in search of treasure. Yes, it’s another mining-themed release—this one from casino game maker Slotmill called Gem Rush. History has seen plenty of gold rushes, with the California boom after the 1848 discovery at Sutter’s Mill often cited as the biggest. Gem rushes, on the other hand, aren’t exactly common. That might change a little with Slotmill’s take, which packs in avalanches, dynamic ways, a Gem Crusher, multiple power-ups, free spins, feature buys, and Burst Mode.
The action kicks off above ground, seemingly right by the mine entrance, though the setting feels a bit unusual. Slotmill gives the scene an almost otherworldly vibe thanks to the distinctive rocky landscape and the pink-tinged sky. The sci-fi atmos is pushed further by the Gem Crusher, which looks oddly alive—similar to the animated “objects” seen in Slotmill’s game Money Jar. The Gem Crusher sits alongside a 5-reel grid with 7 positions per reel. In the base game, however, each spin begins with up to 15 positions covered by blocker tiles. These blockers have no payout value and obstruct the grid, though they can be cleared, as explained below.

To enter this highly volatile mine, players choose a stake of 20 p/c to $/€50 per spin, and it’s available across devices. The basic aim is to land matching symbols on three or more consecutive reels, starting from the far-left reel. When that happens, the avalanche mechanic triggers and removes the winning symbols from the grid, allowing new symbols to fall into the empty spaces. Avalanches keep chaining until no further win is created. In regular play, Gem Rush has a theoretical return to player of 96.1%, although this changes if you purchase one of the Fast Track options.
The symbol set blends gems, mining gear, and card tiles. The J-A ranks pay 0.4x the bet for five-of-a-kind, followed by picks, barrels, helmets, and lamps paying 0.6x the bet for five. Above those are the blue, green, red, and pink Gems, which return 1-2x the bet for a five-symbol winning way. The payouts aren’t huge on their own, but Gem Rush includes a progressive win multiplier and can also create a very high number of ways to win. And it’s not only Gems down here—gold nuggets act as the wilds, substituting for every symbol except the scatter.
Gem Rush: Slot Features

Alongside the main reels, there’s also a small “mini reel” of blocks linked to the Gem Crusher next to the grid. Every time you win, a new block drops into the Gem Crusher. These blocks may include a Power-Up modifier, which triggers on the next avalanche:
- Multiplier increases – boosts the progressive win multiplier by +1 to +5. The progressive win multiplier resets between base game spins.
- Wild Conversion – chooses a symbol type on the reels and turns all of them into wilds.
- Gem Conversion – chooses a symbol type on the reels and changes all instances into Gems.
- Random Wilds – places 3 to 7 wilds onto the screen in random spots.
- Column Wilds – changes all symbols except Bonus symbols on a random reel into wilds.
- Dynamite – clears five blocker tiles so symbols can fall into the spaces, raising the number of ways to win.
- Extra Spin – grants an extra free spin (in the bonus round only).
Free Spins
Hitting 3, 4, or 5 scatter symbols in the base game awards 5, 7, or 10 free spins. During free spins, no blocker tiles appear, meaning the full 16,807 ways to win are active. The win multiplier and Gem Crusher progression also do not reset throughout the free spins round.
Fast Track
When the Fast Track button is available, selecting it brings up a feature buy menu offering these four options:
- Expand – 10x the bet buys a game round with no blocker tiles present (RTP 96.35%).
- Expand+ – 40x the bet buys a game round with no blocker tiles and an x3 win multiplier (RTP 96.46%).
- Bonus – 100x the bet buys entry to free spins (RTP 96.59%).
- Bonus+ – 400x the bet buys free spins with a starting x10 win multiplier (RTP 96.8%).
Burst Mode
Where supported, Burst Mode lets players choose a bet and a number of spins that run without showing reels or symbols. Any winnings appear on-screen as the spin counter ticks down. You can stop Burst Mode before all spins are completed, and you may also decide whether to watch the bonus round play out on the reels in the usual way or skip that view.

Gem Rush: Slot Verdict
To start with, it’s genuinely notable that Slotmill has produced a mining slot that feels different from the many others in the genre. What’s interesting is that it achieves this through restraint rather than piling on loud mining clichés. There’s no grizzled prospector character, for instance, who so often tags along in these games, tossing dynamite and playing up the theatrics. Instead, Slotmill keeps things tidy and focused, letting the gameplay take centre stage.
Even without a prospector, the Gem Crusher provides a companion of sorts, and it’s been cleverly used to feed features into the grid in both the base game and the bonus as avalanches keep chaining. If you don’t fancy waiting to trigger free spins naturally—and if the option is offered—Slotmill titles often provide a broad set of bonus buys, similar in spirit to ELK’s X-iter. In Gem Rush, there’s a solid mix of expanded base game rounds and two free spins choices. Using the full grid in the bonus round appeared to produce noticeably bigger wins than the base game, and while starting at an x10 win multiplier isn’t cheap, it can give a useful head start, making it hard to ignore. Whether you buy features or play through normally, Gem Rush finishes with a strong max win of 10,000x the bet, giving plenty of potential to chase that “rush.”
After titles like Fruit Smash and the retuned Super Fruit Smash, Slotmill’s ability and dedication to building highly playable Avalanche-based video slots was never really in question. Gem Rush fits comfortably among them, delivering a smooth, entertaining, avalanche-led mining slot that’s simply fun to play.
