Gears of Horus: Slot Overview
Blending classic and modern ideas, Pragmatic Play’s online slot Gears of Horus fuses Ancient Egypt with a futuristic, steampunk-leaning vision where gears spin endlessly and oddball tech sits alongside age-old stone architecture. It’s an unusual mash-up, though not entirely unheard of. Pragmatic Play has explored similar territory in Rise of Giza PowerNudge, Thunderkick did it in Pyramyth, and Hot Rise Games touched on it a bit with Nile Mystery DoubleMax.
Using high-tech flair to reimagine Ancient Egypt is a strong concept, and Pragmatic Play delivers it convincingly in Gears of Horus. Naturally, there are cogs—lots of them—whirring beside a grid that puffs out small bursts of steam, accented by glowing blue spheres and shifting statues. The backdrop pushes the theme further with futuristic pyramids, including one illuminated like a nighttime skyscraper, evoking the idea of stacked “office floors” of scribes racing through endless work on stone tablets or papyrus while deadlines hover overhead—before it all gets sent upstairs to bosses who likely never read it. Still, keeping the masses busy and all that. Visually, it’s a rich, highly detailed scene.

Gears of Horus is a cluster pays game played on a 6×6-sized gaming grid that can be expanded up to 8×8. To score a win, clusters need at least 5 identical symbols connected horizontally or vertically in adjacent positions. With stakes ranging from 20 c to $/€240 per spin, it’s a highly volatile slot offering a default RTP of 96.06%.
Whenever a win lands, the winning symbols are removed and new ones drop in from above to fill the gaps. If that creates another winning cluster, the tumble sequence repeats. In terms of symbol values, the biggest clusters in Gears of Horus are 15+ matching symbols, but their payouts aren’t especially high—making the free spins multiplier particularly useful. The pay symbols include green, purple, blue, and red gems, followed by four pieces of Ancient Egyptian-themed jewellery. A 5 OAK cluster pays 0.1 to 1 times the bet, while a 15-64 OAK cluster returns 5 to 100 times the bet. Wilds can land on all reels and replace any symbol except the scatter. If wilds form a win on their own, they pay the same as the top-paying symbol.
Gears of Horus: Slot Features

If the Ancient Egyptians excelled at anything, it was construction—and Gears of Horus gives players a taste of that as the grid “builds out” through consecutive winning tumbles. There’s also a climbing multiplier during free spins (though it resets after each free spin), plus a bonus buy option.
Random Wilds
Following the first, second, third, and fourth consecutive winning tumble, the grid expands down, up, right, and left, respectively. In the base game, once all sides have been unlocked, the next tumble adds a block of wild symbols is added to the grid in a random position. The block contains a minimum of 2 wilds and a maximum of 16. The grid remains at 8×8 until the spin ends, then it resets for the next spin.
Free Spins
Landing 3, 4, or 5 scatter symbols in the base game triggers 8, 12, or 20 free spins, respectively. In free spins, each spin begins with a multiplier of x1. Every tumble increases the multiplier by x1. On each spin, for each of the first 4 tumbles, the multiplier is boosted by x1, x2, x3, x4, or x5, additionally, at random. The multiplier affects all wins for that spin, then resets to x1 at the end of the free spin. Getting 3, 4, or 5 scatter symbols during the feature awards 8, 12, or 20 extra free spins. As in the base game, consecutive tumbles expand the grid, and it resets for subsequent free spins.
Buy Free Spins
The free spins feature can be purchased from the base game for 100x the bet. When the buy is used, 3, 4, or 5 scatters land at random to activate the round, and the default RTP is 96.02%.

Gears of Horus: Slot Verdict
Gears of Horus makes an excellent first impression, with Pragmatic Play creating an immersive setting that merges the mystique of Ancient Egypt with the equally mysterious vibe of Steampunk and beyond. The soundtrack is another highlight, smoothly combining familiar Egyptian slot tones before twisting them into a more modern remix. From a thematic angle, Gears of Horus hits the mark.
Once gameplay takes over, though, Gears of Horus doesn’t always feel as entertaining as the theme suggests. The expanding grid mechanic works well enough and can open up a large play area with plenty of space for clusters to connect. The issue is that cluster payouts are relatively modest, and even with all that extra room, the best clusters only need 15+ symbols anyway. There isn’t a huge sense of anticipation for massive, standout top-cluster rewards. That said, players can still catch a break when the game drops a huge wild block onto the grid. And then there are free spins, where the important win multiplier finally enters the equation.
Even so, the game didn’t quite build momentum in the way Pragmatic Play titles often do during a review, and Gears of Horus generally felt like a tougher ride. Everything needs to come together within a single spin or a single free spin. In free spins, for instance, neither the multiplier nor the grid expansion carries over—you’re effectively starting fresh each time. There’s no question Gears of Horus can get its machinery moving when it chooses, reaching a win cap of 10,000x the bet, but it also felt easy to fall into stretches of irritating spins that produced little, even with a fully expanded grid and/or a multiplier in play. Still, that’s gambling for you, and anyone who hits a lucky run in Gears of Horus will see how it can suddenly feel like a wild inventor in heavy brass goggles yanking levers and making something remarkable happen.
