Frightening Frankie: Slot Verdict

Mary Shelley’s Gothic classic has been reimagined endlessly—so where does Reel Kingdom’s take on ‘The Modern Prometheus’ land? Overall, it’s fairly average. There isn’t much here that delivers big shocks of electrified excitement. The base game doesn’t offer much; it’s largely uneventful. Instead, Frightening Frankie leans on its two bonus rounds to inject momentum. One shared mechanic is the removal of low-paying symbols. Stripping up to five of the lowest-value symbols from the reel strips is certainly helpful, so if you’re going to play Frightening Frankie, you’ll want plenty of Lightning symbols to land.

Whether Lightning Free Spins were truly essential is debatable, though they do add some extra substance. At minimum, they act as a symbol-removal warm-up before the main attraction. That main attraction—Monster Trail Free Spins—can be decent, depending on how well symbol removal and Test Tube collection are progressing. Despite the name, Frightening Frankie isn’t a monster in terms of top-end returns, since it caps out at 2,800x the bet. That places Frightening Frankie in Big Bass Bonanza territory, but without the fishing theme or the symbol collection mechanic that helped its older sibling take off.

In the end, Frightening Frankie comes across like a stitched-together experiment that never fully sparks into life. The visuals have some charm, but the B-movie style can only carry things so far when the gameplay doesn’t hit with much force. Fans of Reel Kingdom’s approach may still find something to enjoy, yet overall, Frankie’s breakout causes only a small slice of the memorable mayhem created by his literary predecessor.
