Eye of the Storm: Slot Overview

Pragmatic Play partner Reel Kingdom steps away from reworking other studios’ concepts to launch—actually, it’s another familiar take—Eye of the Storm. The game clearly draws on the Merkur/Reel Time gaming favourite Eye of Horus, best known for its symbol upgrade mechanic during free spins. Eye of the Storm includes that idea, but offers very little that feels fresh, making it yet another close imitation from a team not exactly known for originality.

To be fair, there are a handful of changes, with the clearest being the presentation. Reel Kingdom swaps the original’s mostly brown palette for brighter, more colourful artwork. The game runs on a traditional layout of 5 reels and 10 paylines, framed by pillars, temples, and distant pyramids. This isn’t the usual postcard version of Ancient Egypt either. Instead of sunshine and calm blue skies—like drifting down the Nile on a felucca while farmers work the banks—Eye of the Storm (the title gives it away) goes for something far moodier. Thick clouds roll through, lightning cracks, and the atmosphere suggests trouble ahead. If anything stands out as genuinely different here, it’s the tone.

Another tweak is that the default RTP is also a touch higher than Eye of Horus, coming in at a very solid 96.71%. Volatility stays high, so expect long dry spells before anything substantial turns up. The stake range has been pushed upward too, which may appeal to big-staking Eye of Horus devotees, reaching $/€250 per spin, while the minimum sits at 10 p/c for players keeping things modest.

Wins land when three or more identical symbols appear next to each other from the leftmost reel. The symbol set is notable mainly because it’s essentially the same as the inspiration, just polished visually. Lower values are J-A, followed by folding-fans, Ankhs, scarabs, birds, jackals, and the Eye of Horus. Hitting five premium symbols pays 20 to 50 times the stake. The wild is the one element that looks significantly changed, showing a priestess/warrior/queen type character—take your pick. Wilds appear on reels 2, 3 or 4, and when they help create a win, they expand to cover the entire reel.

Eye of the Storm – free spins

Beyond the expanding wilds, the main extra in Eye of the Storm is a free spins round with a symbol upgrade mechanic. It starts when 3 or more pyramid scatters land, awarding 12 free spins. There’s also an instant payout of 2x, 20x, or 50x the bet when 3, 4, or 5 scatters trigger the bonus.

In free spins, whenever 1, 2, or 3 wilds appear, they can expand and award 1, 3, or 5 additional free spins, while also pushing the feature up 1, 2, or 3 levels. Each level upgrades the premium high-paying symbols. One wild upgrades folding-fans into Ankhs, then the next wild turns Ankhs into scarabs. After that, scarabs become birds, then jackals, and eventually it’s possible for the top-paying eye symbol to be the only premium left on the reels. Naturally, this greatly boosts the chances of hitting higher-value combinations. Finally, free spins can be retriggered when 3 or more scatters land.

Eye of the Storm: Slot Verdict

There isn’t a lot here that feels worth praising. You could argue it looks cleaner and more up to date compared to the older visuals of the original. On the other hand, part of Eye of Horus’ appeal is its classic, nostalgic style. As always, that’s subjective and will depend on the player. If we’re really stretching for positives, the wild design is different, so some might prefer the more glamorous warrior-style character over a traditional flat depiction of a god. The stats are also adjusted, with RTP being the most welcome change if you’re playing at a casino offering the top setting, and higher-stakes players may enjoy the option to bet much more if they want.

So while Eye of the Storm isn’t inherently unpleasant to play, was there really a need for another Eye of Horus imitator? Blueprint Gaming has already gone deep into this niche with multiple Eye of Horus releases, including Megaways and a Power 4 Slots version. Whatever your view on that, it’s hardly shocking that Reel Kingdom is the studio behind it. A quick look through their library shows takes on Fishin’ Frenzy, various ‘book of’ clones, Reel King, and now Eye of Horus. It’s like stepping into a parallel world where everything looks familiar, just slightly altered.

In the end, Eye of the Storm may still entertain Egypt-themed slot fans who don’t know the original, or who simply can’t play it. The higher RTP is a plus as well. But being such an obvious copy robs Eye of the Storm of any real credibility. Unless you’re determined to try every Eye of Horus-style game, or you want to raise your stakes considerably for a symbol upgrade feature, you won’t be missing much by skipping this one.
