Emperor’s Rise: Slot Overview

A key part of running a thriving business is understanding what customers want and delivering it, and Swedish studio Slotmill has repeatedly shown it can do exactly that. The developer has proven it listens to player input, polishing titles like Coin Quest 2 and Super Fruit Smash. The latest release, Emperor’s Rise, continues that approach. Arriving shortly after the popular Tyrant’s Fall, it brings back much of the same feature set, but with tweaks designed to create a “softer” experience—less punishing and a bit more approachable. Some trade-offs were made to smooth things out, including reduced multiplier values, though the increased number of wilds in free spins could be a welcome perk for anyone who ends up preferring this take over the earlier game.

Visually, the production level is similar across both slots, but the mood is very different. Where Tyrant’s Fall leaned into a gloomy, weighty atmosphere, Emperor’s Rise turns up the brightness. In other words, if Tyrant’s Fall felt like it unfolded at night, Emperor’s Rise plays out in daylight—still among the same ruined columns overlooking rolling hills, somewhere within the Roman Empire (or territory about to become part of it). If the goal was a lighter counterpart, the more vibrant presentation sells that change effectively.

Emperor’s Rise uses a 5×3 grid with 20 bet lines fixed in place for determining wins. With volatility on the medium-high side, stakes range from 20 cents to $/€60 per spin, and there are a few extra wagering settings to consider. One is the Xtra-Bet, which increases the stake by 50% and provides an increased chance of landing free spins by 2.6 times. With Xtra-Bet enabled, RTP is 96.17%, versus the standard 96.08%. There’s also Burst Mode for players who want to play at a faster pace.

Looking at the paytable, the lower values are represented by chunky J to A card ranks, followed by arm bands, grapes, a sword, a golden wreath, and a character as the top symbols. A 5 OAK royal result pays 3.5 to 6 times your bet, while the premium symbols can return up to 14 to 40 times the bet.

Emperor’s Rise: Slot Features

The core framework of Emperor’s Rise is largely the same as Tyrant’s Fall, though a number of specific adjustments have been introduced to shape the overall feel for a different type of player.

Wild Symbol

Two wild symbols can land on any spin, and they may come with a multiplier of x2, x3, x5, and x20. Once wilds appear, they move to a random reel position. Wilds replace standard paying symbols, and if a wild multiplier contributes to a win, that multiplier is applied to the payout. If a win includes two or more wild multipliers, the multipliers add together. Any winning line involving wilds pays at the same rate as the highest-value symbol.

Free Spins

Hitting 3, 4, or 5 scatter symbols in the same spin awards 5 free spins, and the scatter collection begins at 3, 4, or 5 accordingly. During free spins, any extra scatters are collected to advance through five stages. The feature starts with 2 Roaming Wild symbols, which remain on the reels for the entire bonus and shift to new spots before each free spin. Landing 3 or more scatter symbols in a single free spin grants +5 free spins at the current stage.

  • Stage 2 – collect 6 scatters in total to gain +5 free spins with x2 Roaming Wild Multipliers.
  • Stage 3 – collect 9 scatters in total to gain +5 free spins with x3 Roaming Wild Multipliers.
  • Stage 4 – collect 13 scatters in total to gain +5 free spins with x5 Roaming Wild Multipliers.
  • Stage 5 – collect 17 scatters in total to gain +5 free spins with x20 Roaming Wild Multipliers.

Super Free Spins

You can reach this bonus either by upgrading from free spins, by landing 2 scatters plus one Bonus Maximus symbol in the base game, or by hitting a Bonus Maximus symbol during free spins. In this mode, 4 Roaming Wild symbols stay in play for the full feature. The remaining free spins mechanics still apply, including progressing through stages.

Fast Track

Within Fast Track, players can choose from the following bonus options; each is medium-high volatile:

  • Random Wilds – 8x the bet for a game round, guaranteeing either two wild symbols or a free spins trigger. RTP 96.09%.
  • Free Spins – 80x the bet, RTP 96.3%.
  • Super Free Spins – 300x the bet, RTP 96.36%.

Emperor’s Rise: Slot Verdict

Slotmill seems to have had a very specific target in mind with Emperor’s Rise, and it’s fair to say it hits that mark. This wasn’t designed to take Tyrant’s Fall into bold new territory, but rather to offer an alternative for players who liked the original concept yet felt it was a bit too intense. If that’s the audience, then the more evened-out, less demanding ride that Emperor’s Rise provides could be exactly what they’re after.

The two most noticeable, gut-level differences are that Roaming Wilds in free spins are doubled, while the maximum multiplier values are scaled down. Once you look closer, those are meaningful changes. For example, free spins begin without any multipliers on the wilds. You do have more wilds in play, but in the review it was only after reaching stage 2 or higher—when multipliers enter—that their impact really started to show. Even x2 multipliers felt significantly stronger. Now picture pushing all the way to x30 or, worse, x150. That’s Tyrant’s Fall. In Emperor’s Rise, the ceiling is x20. Even so, reaching stage 5 still delivers thrilling numbers, and roaming wild multipliers tend to be a strong mechanic regardless of theme.

As expected, the overall win potential has been reduced, topping out at 6,000x instead of Tyrant’s 10,000x. What’s notable, though, is how Emperor’s Rise highlights that developers can still appeal to players who don’t subscribe to the “bigger is always better” philosophy. We saw a similar idea recently in Kenneth Must Die, where the Nolimit Cap allows players to pick their preferred risk/reward level between higher and lower settings. Slotmill achieves a comparable result by releasing two distinct games rather than bundling both approaches into one. Ultimately, Emperor’s Rise isn’t necessarily a stronger slot than Tyrant’s Fall—but for the right kind of player, it could easily be the more appealing choice.
