Buggin: Slot Overview

To many people, bugs are just a nuisance, and to some they’re downright unsettling. But look a little closer and they’re genuinely impressive. Take the African driver ant, for example: it can produce up to 4 million eggs every 25 days. And beyond the shock factor, insects play a vital part in keeping ecosystems in balance. Maybe that’s worth remembering before automatically squashing the next ant that wanders into the pantry. Or maybe not. Either way, here’s the online slot Buggin, where developer ELK Studios pays tribute to some of the animal kingdom’s hardest workers.

Buggin is an outdoor-themed game set in a park (or an especially lovely back garden), complete with a lily-pad pond, a cute table-and-chair setup, neat lawns, flowers, and trees. It’s the kind of place you’d relax with an Earl Grey with milk and honey and try to find a bit of calm in nature—until the bugs show up. Fortunately, in this slot, the bugs are the good guys, and ELK Studios has made sure they look more charming than creepy.

Buggin slot – base game

Buggin is a cluster pays slot, meaning wins land when at least 5 identical symbols connect horizontally and/or vertically. Play takes place on a 7×7 game grid, with 49 symbols dropping in every round. Stakes range from 20 c to $/€100 on this highly volatile title, and the RTP sits at ELK’s familiar 94%.

Four garden items make up Buggin’s low pays—a leaf, a berry, grapes, and a mushroom—while 4 semi-humanised bug characters serve as the high pays. A 5-symbol cluster returns 0.1 to 1 times the bet, and the biggest 12+ symbol clusters award 1.5 to 100 times the stake. You may also see stacks of different wild symbols on the grid, which can substitute for regular symbols, among other effects.

Buggin: Slot Features

Cascades sit at the heart of Buggin’s gameplay, supported by big symbols, a progress meter, Feature Wilds, Wild Redrops, free drops, super free drops, and X-iter feature buys.

Big Symbols

Any pay symbol can land as big symbols of 2×2 or 3×3 in dimension. Big symbols pay according to how many 1×1 symbols they occupy.

Cascading Wins

With cascading wins, winning symbols pop off the board, and new symbols fall in to fill the gaps. Wild symbols are not removed when they help form a win. If the cluster win contained no wilds, a wild symbol with an x1 multiplier appears in one of the empty spaces before the drop. When multiple wilds are included in a winning cluster, they merge into 1 wild, combining their multiplier values. A wild can contribute to several cluster wins, meaning it may be included in multiple wild merges. If several wild multipliers are involved in a win, they are added together. Once no further win is created, the cascade sequence stops, and any collected Feature Wilds are then released.

Progress Bar & Feature Wilds

Winning symbols advance the progress bar above the reels. On reaching the end of the bar, a random Feature Wild is collected into the leftmost empty position in the Wild Inventory, and the meter is reset. When wins stop, the stored Feature Wilds are released onto the reels. If a Feature Wild on the grid is part of a win, it triggers, applying its modifier while staying as a wild.

  • Big – expands a pay symbol into a 2×2 or 3×3 big symbol. Covered symbols are removed.
  • Multiplying – adds its multiplier value to all wild symbols not part of a win.
  • Random – replaces 2 to 4 pay symbols with regular wilds.
  • Removing – removes all instances of the lowest paying symbol from the grid.
  • Upgrading – upgrades all instances of a pay symbol type.

Wild Redrops

For each spin, one Feature Wild in the Wild Inventory is assigned a Wild Redrop target. Collecting Feature Wilds up to the target awards a Wild Redrop containing that number of Feature Wilds. Any extra Feature Wilds collected increase the amount included in the Wild Redrop. Wild Redrops play out when no more wins appear. Regular wilds stay sticky, and the gathered Feature Wilds are prefilled and released. Wild Redrops may retrigger, but they do not appear in the super bonus game.

Free Spins Bonus Game

Hit 3 scatters to trigger 7 free spins. If at least one triggering scatter is a super scatter, then 7 super free spins are awarded instead. Regular wild symbols are sticky when entering the bonus and remain sticky between spins. When super free spins begin, all Feature Wilds in the Wild Inventory are locked. They become unlocked when collected for the first time. The next free spin begins with a prefill and release of the number of unlocked Feature Wilds. In both versions, landing 3 scatters awards +3 free spins, and if at least one is a super scatter, the free spins are upgraded to super free spins.

X-iter

The X-iter feature lets players purchase entry into different modes, each using the same 94% RTP value.

  • Bonus Hunt – drops cost 3x the bet and have a higher chance of triggering the bonus.
  • 2 Feature Wilds – 5x the bet for a game round with 2 Feature Wilds prefilled and released.
  • 4 Feature Wilds – 10x the bet for a game round with 4 Feature Wilds prefilled and released.
  • Bonus – 100x the bet to buy free spins.
  • Super Bonus – 500x the bet to buy super free spins.

Buggin: Slot Verdict

Buggin took a bit of time to win me over, but once it started to make sense, the strong production values and smart feature set stood out. Not many casino developers pack as many mechanics into a slot as ELK Studios does, then polish it all up with a sleek presentation. On the flip side, not many studios cling so firmly to a 94% default RTP either, which has become their standard. There’s also been some pushback from players about the weaker/scripted math models. It’s frustrating, because ELK Studios games are often genuinely well crafted. Frequently harsh, frequently unforgiving, but undeniably slick while juggling a heap of interesting systems.

That description fits plenty of ELK titles, and it fits Buggin too. The paytable language can be a bit awkward to interpret at times, but the core idea is to land as many clusters as possible to gather Feature Wilds, then drop them onto the reels to try to stitch together even more clusters and keep the chain going. Building up wild multiplier values along the way certainly doesn’t hurt either. In fact, it was during a solid super bonus buy that this came together, and when it does, Buggin becomes a lively, action-heavy ride—bringing to mind another successful ELK Studios cluster pays slot, Propaganda, with all the wild multiplier merging and similar antics.

That said, Propaganda felt like the more rewarding game overall, and it also offered a higher return. Still, Buggin does what it sets out to do very well, and it has the potential to seriously impress cluster pays fans, with a top prize of 10,000x the bet—at least in theory. With Buggin, ELK Studios has once again delivered a slot that’s polished to a shine, which, like ants at a picnic, is held back by certain statistical factors.
