Bloodaxe: Slot Overview

People love to say you shouldn’t judge by appearances, but a slot called Bloodaxe never sounded like it would be about cheerful leprechauns or sugary sweets. One look at it backs that up: Bloodaxe, created by Relax Gaming partner Four Leaf Gaming, dives straight into the loud-and-proud world of the Vikings. Being a Four Leaf Gaming release, it comes packed with the brand’s familiar selection of gambling options and wheel-style extras. Alongside the staples, Bloodaxe also brings Wild Axes, free spins, and the sticky-wild finale known as Bloodaxe Spins.

Four Leaf Gaming has opted for a more grounded, semi-realistic take on the Viking cast, and every character looks ready for trouble. The base game is set on a bitterly cold day, with the grid positioned near an imposing building as snow drifts through the scene. Not exactly ideal weather for sailing off to raid distant shores. On the bright side, conditions like that are perfect for staying inside without guilt—tucking into boar and washing it down with foaming mugs of mead. These days, though, bad weather usually means booting up a console or sinking into the sofa for Netflix. Have we gone soft?

Still, if you want to act hard in Bloodaxe, you’ll need to choose a wager from 20 c to $/€40 and smash the spin button. The action plays out on a 5-reel layout with 4 rows and 25 ways to win. Wins pay left to right starting from reel 1, and you’ll need at least 3 matching symbols to collect. Built on a highly volatile model, Bloodaxe has a theoretical RTP of 95% to players – which remains the same when purchasing free spins.

Despite the name, axes aren’t part of the regular pay symbols. Instead, the paytable is made up of 4 coin symbols as the low pays and 4 character symbols as the premiums. Winning combinations, including 5-of-a-kind low symbols, return 1.5 to 3 times the bet, while 5 OAK top-tier hits pay 10 to 20 times the bet. The axe shows up properly as the wild symbol. Wilds can land on any reel, substitute for all standard pay symbols, and a five-wild line pays 20x the bet.

Bloodaxe: Slot Features

Wild axes matter beyond simple substitution, playing a major role in both the base game and the bonus. In the base game, whenever wilds hit, an axe is tossed at the target above it. Where it lands determines how the reel collector is filled with 1, 2, or 3 points. Once a collection meter reaches 4 points on any reel, you receive 4 respins with an expanding wild on that reel. If another reel’s collector fills up during the respins, that reel also turns into an expanded wild reel, and the respin count is reset back to 4.

Free Spins

Hitting 3, 4, or 5 scatter symbols in the base game triggers 10, 15, or 20 free spins, respectively. Target collections are reset when the feature begins, but do not reset between spins during the free spins round. When wilds land, they add 1, 2, or 3 points to the relevant reel collector. After the free spins finish, 4 Bloodaxe spins are awarded. During Bloodaxe spins, the amount of wilds added to each reel matches the number on the collectors. These wilds remain sticky until the Bloodaxe spins are over. In addition, any reel that has reached 4 collection points applies an x2 multiplier to each wild it contributes. If multiple multipliers are involved in a win, their values are added together. Free spins are available to buy for 78x the bet.

Bonus Booster

Before free spins start, players can gamble for the chance to gain 1, 2, or 3 additional spins. Use the slider to select how many free spins you want to risk—the more spins you stake, the higher the chance of winning extra spins from the gamble. This gamble can be repeated up to a maximum total of 25 spins.

Bonus Replay

If free spins end under a certain threshold, players can gamble their winnings for an opportunity to play the feature again. Winning the gamble grants a fresh free spins round, though the earlier winnings do not carry over. Losing sends you back to the base game.

Super Spinner

The Super Spinner may be triggered each time a coin is collected. Coins can land at random on low-pay symbols. Switching bet levels adjusts the coin values collected in line with the stake. When Super Spinner activates, it can award cash prizes of 80-5,000x, 10-25 free spins, cash prizes of 10-25x, or 10-25 Nitro Spins. The Super Spinner is also purchasable, with a base price of 60x the bet.

Nitro Spins

Turning on Nitro Spins in the base game causes wild axes hit more frequently with improved odds of striking the bullseye, boosts scatter frequency for free spins, increases how often coins are collected, and makes the Super Spinner trigger more regularly. A Nitro Spin increases the stake by 50% or costs 4 coins per spin.

Bloodaxe: Slot Verdict

In terms of slot design, Four Leaf Gaming has generally kept things on the safer side so far—at least when it comes to themes. The studio has leaned into familiar territory like jokers, pirates, clovers, and now Vikings. That’s not a knock; plenty of developers stick with proven subject matter. And to be fair, Four Leaf Gaming has built a convincingly immersive Viking setting to disappear into for a while, all while trying to get axes flying around the screen. The setup was solid—so did the rest deliver?

Bloodaxe was a mixed ride. Players hunting for a Viking slot loaded with extra gambling choices may well be pleased they picked Bloodaxe. Many of the add-ons are classic Four Leaf Gaming mechanics you’ll recognise from other titles, though the newer twists are interesting on their own. The standout is easily Bloodaxe Spins, where the wilds earned through collecting are slapped onto the reels. If the collecting goes your way, some of those wilds also arrive with a useful x2 multiplier. The approach brings to mind something Relax Gaming might do, and Wild Chapo came to mind, where certain spots become wilds or multiplier wilds on the final bonus spin. Here you get 4 closing spins, but Bloodaxe didn’t quite generate the same edge-of-the-seat tension that Wild Chapo managed.

Maybe our wild collecting simply didn’t cooperate enough to hit those same adrenaline highs. On paper, with a 10,000x the bet max win, Bloodaxe has the potential to get fiery, yet the overall feel came across a bit muted. It could be down to the fairly low-drama reel action, or something along those lines. It’s tricky to pinpoint exactly why the response wasn’t as strong as expected. The visuals are excellent and the feature set is engaging, but it can feel like Bloodaxe leans heavily on its extra betting options to supply the excitement, leaving straightforward spins feeling slightly empty.

Then again, throwing extra wagers at every possible moment is very much Four Leaf Gaming’s style. So, if you’ve enjoyed having those opportunities in other releases from this provider, you’ll likely welcome them here too—time to sharpen the blades. If, however, you’re not particularly interested in additional gambles and want a more straightforward Viking slot experience, it’s worth questioning whether Bloodaxe will fully hit the mark.
