Zeus II: Introduction
Say Zeus to any seasoned casino player and you’ll likely hear a story or two about their time with the classic Zeus or Zeus III. Bring up Zeus II, though, and you’ll often be met with confusion. While the earlier titles earned near-legendary reputations and performed extremely well both online and in land-based venues, this one has, until now, largely existed only as a physical cabinet game. As it turns out, you haven’t really been missing much.
At a quick glance it looks very similar to the original Zeus, but a closer look reveals an additional symbol row and a higher number of paylines. Since it has already been on casino floors for years, it’s hardly a fresh release and was probably pushed out soon after Zeus to ride the wave of its popularity.
In Zeus II, the Greek God Zeus returns on a 5-reel, 4 row reel setup with 50 paylines, bringing a Respin feature—and not much else. A look at the paytable suggests Mr Zeus has sadly lost his spark. Playable on all devices from 60 cents up to a shocking 1000 EUR per spin, this old-school slot plays out in the skies above Ancient Greece, perhaps hovering near the heights of Mount Olympus. In terms of presentation, the one truly standout element is the music: a surprisingly strong, classical-style soundtrack.
Zeus II: Features
From a visual standpoint, it uses the same overall style as the other Zeus games, so if you know the originals, there’s little here that feels different. The reels include scrolls, laurel wreaths, gold, silver and bronze coins, Greek vases, harps, trojan helmets, warships and Pegasus horses. The top-paying symbol is Zeus, shown stacked on the reels, and it awards 3.75 times the stake for 5 of a kind. Yes, that’s correct. The wild is a temple and it can appear on reels 2, 3, 4 and 5.
The main mechanic is the Hot Hot Super Respin feature. When a complete stack of Zeus symbols lands on reel 1, respin mode begins, awarding you 2 respins while reel 1—and any Zeus or wild symbols that land—stay locked for the entire feature. It triggers fairly often and can activate in both the base game and during free spins.
The free spin feature starts when 3 scatter symbols land on reel 1, 2 and 3. You begin with 10 free spins, and landing 3 more scatters during the free spins grants another 10 spins. It retriggers quite readily, which is one of the few upsides here.
The only real difference between the bonus round and the base game is that extra wild and Zeus symbols are added to the reels. Unfortunately, even if you manage to hit a full-screen premium symbol, it only pays 187 times your stake, which is pretty staggering.
Zeus II: Conclusion
Sadly, we have to strongly recommend skipping Zeus II, even if you’re a fan of the original games—which, to be clear, are excellent and still enjoyable today. The payouts are terrible, and the overall potential is far too limited to generate any real excitement. Those low returns also make the gameplay feel irritating, and the respin feature soon becomes more of a nuisance thanks to its drawn-out respins. Nothing worth sticking around for—move along.
