Xpander: Slot Overview

Keeping to the familiar formula that defines Hacksaw Gaming’s Pocketz series, Xpander is a clean, no-frills looking slot that feels perfectly suited to mobile play – though it runs smoothly on any device. As is often the case with Hacksaw, the simple presentation hides some smart mechanics, and Xpander also delivers one of the bigger max wins in the range. Like many Pocketz titles, it can produce genuinely satisfying moments when everything aligns, or leave you ready to hurl your phone out the train window on the commute home when the game decides to turn against you.

With Xpander, Hacksaw Gaming leans into a retro-futuristic vibe. Depending on your session, you’ll see a blue or purple backdrop of anonymous high-rise buildings behind the 7×7 sized panel. Hacksaw isn’t exactly known for ultra-detailed art, but they usually make strong use of minimal elements. Even so, Xpander isn’t their most engaging slot in terms of visuals and sound. That may be because the grid is filled with old-school fruit and classic slot icons, which don’t entirely match the theme. In some respects, it feels like a Hop’N’Pop / Cubes 2 hybrid. A soft Synthwave track pushes the game further into an 80s mood, with a wind-chime quality that stays fairly subdued, only lifting when free spins start going your way.

Presentation isn’t really the headline act in a Hacksaw title (you could argue it rarely is), because it’s the maths and feature design that drive the experience. Pocketz slots can feel like Candy Crush alternatives for players who want something sharper on their phone with the possibility of meaningful returns; but they can be punishing. In Xpander, that translates into a highly volatile math model and a theoretical return of 96.25% – marginally above the 96.2% RTP when purchasing the feature.

Running on a cluster pays system, wins land when 5 or more symbols connect horizontally or vertically anywhere across the grid. Xpander’s symbols are as plain as the background, ranging from cherries, lemons, grapes, watermelons, bells, horseshoes, 7s, up to diamonds. The best outcome is forming clusters of 15 matching symbols or more, which award payouts of 20 to 80 times the stake. A blank hand of cards acts as the wild, replacing all symbols except the free spin scatter.

Xpander: Slot Features

Xpander builds on an earlier title, Hop’N’Pop, and carries over a comparable Hopper mechanic into both the base game and bonus play. The two slots aren’t identical, though, as Hacksaw has adjusted how the Hopper works in Xpander, even if the underlying idea remains shared.

The first mechanic to note is the tumble feature, which clears winning clusters from the grid. This allows new or remaining symbols to drop into the vacant spaces, potentially creating additional cluster wins. Tumbles keep chaining until no further wins appear, after which the next spin begins.

The Hopper feature is represented by an x2 multiplier icon positioned on top of standard symbols. It starts at 1×1 in size and shifts to a new position between free or paid spins. If the Hopper sits on a symbol that forms part of a winning cluster, that cluster’s payout is multiplied by the Hopper’s current value.

Additional symbols can also appear that boost both the size and strength of the Hopper multiplier. Double Up symbols can land anywhere to double the current multiplier up to a maximum of x128. You can also hit multiple Double Up symbols in the same moment.

Watch for the green arrow, the Grow Symbol. When it lands, it is collected. For every 3 Grow Symbols collected during a tumble sequence, the size of the Hopper increases from 1×1 to 2×2, 3×3 and then 4×4. Each time the multiplier expands, players also receive a respin. Between paid spins, the Hopper resets its size and value.

Hitting at least 3 free spin symbols in the base game triggers the free spins feature. Here, the multiplier value or size never reset, although both still follow the same caps – x128 and a 4×4 size. The feature begins with 5 free spins, and landing 1UP symbols awards +1 free spin.

Where the option exists, players may buy free spins instead of waiting for a natural trigger. The price is 129x the bet.

Xpander: Slot Verdict

Hacksaw Gaming didn’t waste time following their successful Hop’n’Pop with another attention-grabbing slot built around the Hopper idea. Although the two games share plenty of DNA, Xpander brings something that Hop’n’Pop – and not many other slots – really provides: a multiplier that increases in both size and value while hopping to fresh positions. It has shades of a multiplying Gargantoon Wild like the one in Reactoonz 2, but Xpander keeps the mechanics more straightforward, and getting anywhere near x128 is enough to make even the calmest player break a sweat.

A big part of the pressure comes from the fact that, like Stack ‘Em, you only get five quick free spins to make it happen. Hacksaw has tuned the maths so there were typically plenty of tumbles during the review, stretching the bonus round out. Still, don’t expect much from those chains until the multiplier has climbed a few steps. On top of that, 1UP symbols showed up fairly often too. Even so, Xpander can be just as ruthless as most Hacksaw releases when it decides not to cooperate, with the possible exception of Born Wild.

When Xpander does click, the grid action is strong enough to distract from the plain visuals and drowsy soundtrack. It isn’t one of Hacksaw’s most outrageous potential games, but few players will complain about a 10,000x top prize. Add in the way other Hacksaw titles have been seen going wild – including sister slot Hop’n’Pop – and it’s clear Xpander can explode just as hard on the right day. Overall, it’s a polished entry that captures what the Pocketz line is known for, making it an easy pick for fans of the series.
