Start up Xmas Magic and it quickly becomes obvious that the Play’n GO team has had other priorities this year than delivering a standout Christmas slot. Put plainly, it comes across as rough, unoriginal, and pretty generic. Sure, Christmas themes are packed with unavoidable clichés, but there’s virtually no attempt here to do anything different. Spoiler: it’s also a clone. Yessirree. With pumpkins and witches swapped out for snowmen and candy canes, Xmas Magic is essentially a reskin of the 2015 title Happy Halloween.

If you still want the technical details, here they are. Xmas Magic is a highly volatile 5-reel, 4-row slot with 1 to 50 adjustable paylines. The default 96.5% RTP is standard enough—unless your casino has selected one of the lower RTP configurations. You can play Xmas Magic on any device with stakes ranging from just 0.01 to €/$100 per spin, so it fits basically any bankroll.

As for the visuals, they’re not an outright disaster, but we’ve seen Play’n GO do far better. Xmas Magic delivers the expected holiday look, yet it doesn’t really pop and feels like something that missed its release window back in 2004. The backdrop shows a townhouse with snowy mountains behind it, while the reels feature low symbols from A to 9 plus snowglobes, hot cocoa, candy canes, and stockings. The top payer is the mistletoe, which can show up stacked 4-high  – land five across a full payline to collect 20 times your stake. The wild is a golden gift box, substituting for all symbols except the scatter, and it can appear on every reel except the first.

If you’ve played the original, you’ll know the main attraction is the Free Spin feature. To trigger it, land 3 Santa Claus scatter symbols on the three first reels – and you’ll receive 10 free spins. The premium mistletoe symbol always appears as a four-symbol-high stack. Once free spins begin, one extra high-paying symbol is randomly selected to also appear in stacks of four for the duration of the feature.

Then, on every free spin, two additional wild symbols are added to reels 2-5. These extra wilds stack onto any wilds already present, extending the wild stacks on each reel and boosting your chances of forming wins. The real path to a big result is getting a retrigger. An extra 10 free spins can be retriggered on any spin, giving you the opportunity to reach 20 free spins total with continuously expanding wild stacks, for a top potential payout of 4,000 times your stake.

When this game first appeared in 2015 as Happy Halloween, players reacted very positively. It stayed in demand for quite a while and was a regular pick for casino streamers up until at least mid-2017. Since then, though, the market has shifted dramatically. For one thing, slots don’t tend to enjoy the same long shelf life they once did, and there also weren’t nearly as many studios competing then as there are today.

Would Happy Halloween have hit the same way if it launched now? Probably not. Does it still play well? Yes, but with so many strong options available, it ends up much lower on our list of older games worth returning to.

Most players, of course, won’t know any of that. For them, Xmas Magic could feel as fresh as mom’s newly baked Christmas cake. For us, it didn’t leave much of an impression. It feels old-fashioned, looks fairly bland, and in any case there are more attractive Christmas themed slots out there, like Festive Indulgence, Secrets of Christmas, Happy Holidays or Santa vs Rudolf.
