Wolf Legend Megaways (Blueprint Gaming): Review

Editor’s note: we’ve been informed that software developer Pragmatic Play has expressed concerns that Wolf Legend Megaways is a copy of their game Wolf Gold. There are now rumours suggesting an ongoing dispute related to this.

Blueprint’s Megaways slots are becoming tougher to tell apart, but as long as there are fresh angles to dig into and something to keep us interested, we usually don’t mind. With so many versions available, it won’t take long before you find one that feels like it was tuned for your tastes. And it’s no secret that modern life pushes us toward constant speed, which also means slots often come and go with the lifespan of a housefly.

That said, in this instance we have to admit the similarity to Buffalo Rising Megaways (Blueprint Gaming) is a bit distracting. It even feels like that title may have served as the blueprint for Wolf Legend, because during our test session we noticed the developers had left the old title showing in the top-right corner. Either way, Wolf Legend isn’t a straight clone. It uses a different RTP, offers a higher max win, and includes a completely new feature.

Fundamentally, Wolf Legend Megaways follows the familiar Bonanza-style formula. It runs on 6 reels, with each reel showing between 2 and 7 symbols per spin, which means it can reach up to 117,649 ways to win when fully expanded. Gameplay uses cascading reels: after a win, the symbols involved burst away and are replaced by new ones. The drops keep chaining as long as fresh wins continue to land.

With a canyon setting and a howling audio track that isn’t too far removed from Buffalo Rising Megaways, it leans heavily into an American wild west vibe. On the reels you’ll find A to 9 royals along with bald eagles, bison, cougars, and golden wolves. The last of these is the top-paying symbol, awarding 50 times your stake for landing 6 on adjacent reels. The wolf set against the super moon acts as the wild and is limited to the 4 positions above the reels.

Watch for the special canyon sunset icon, referred to as the Mystery Symbol. Every mystery symbol on the screen will change into the same matching symbol (excluding the scatter) in an attempt to complete a winning line-up.

The howling wolf functions as the scatter. Hit at least 3 anywhere on the reels to activate the bonus. There isn’t a fixed free spins package here; instead, each scatter awards a random number of spins from 1 to 5. Before the bonus begins, though, you’ll enter the Golden Streak feature, where you get an additional opportunity to collect more free spins.

You begin with up to 3 lifelines (3, 4 or 5+ scatters gives you 1, 2 or 3 lifelines respectively), and every scatter that appears on screen adds another 1 to 5 free spins to your tally. If a spin plays out without a scatter landing, you lose one lifeline. Golden Streak ends once all lifelines are gone. But it still isn’t finished: you’re then taken to the Gamble screen, where you can either cash out and proceed to the bonus using the free spins you’ve collected, or gamble for a shot at up to 3 extra lifelines and additional Golden Streak spins. Choose wisely—if you lose the gamble, you also lose access to the bonus.

The Free Spins feature works like other Bonanza-style slots, with each cascade boosting the multiplier by 1. The feature can also be retriggered—3 or 4 scatters awards 5 or 10 extra free spins respectively. Wolf Legend Megaways feels unnecessary. The visuals and soundtrack are strikingly close to Buffalo Rising, and the differences are too minor to really justify another release in the same mould. It’s not that the game is poor—it’s more a question of how many near-identical entries we actually need. Eventually, if we’re being honest, mass-producing Megaways titles like this could also start to dilute what made Megaways feel special in the first place.

You can always skip Wolf Legend if you’re tired of these Bonanza-style clones, though realistically most of us will probably spin it anyway. A new Megaways slot to test your luck on (maybe this one won’t feel as cursed as some of the others, eh?), plus the possibility of landing up to 50,000 times your stake, is clearly enough motivation for plenty of players.
