Willy Wonka Pure Imagination looks like an accidental throwback to the 1970s, and the feature set isn’t particularly noteworthy either.

As noted earlier, one of the biggest issues is the clunky, retro-looking presentation—whether intentional or not. Perhaps Willy Wonka Pure Imagination was designed this way to mirror the film’s age. Possibly, but that feels like giving it the benefit of the doubt. The base game is unimpressive, and the free spins round, rather than layering on extra sensory flair to raise the excitement, somehow becomes even duller and more washed out. Why that choice was made is unclear. It also doesn’t help that the features themselves feel fairly flat, made worse by the concerning minimum win guarantees attached to both the Oompa Loompa feature and the free spins round.

Instead of delivering a bold, imaginative ride that bends reality and pulls players into a world where up is down and sanity is optional, Willy Wonka Pure Imagination comes across like a generic, unbranded chocolate bar with barely any taste. Once the initial novelty of seeing a classic old-school film on the reels faded—almost immediately—so did any real motivation to keep spinning. It’s a shame, because Playzido had the perfect opportunity to turn the inspired idea of using the original Willy Wonka film into something unforgettable and truly wild. Instead, much like Augustus Gloop, Willy Wonka Pure Imagination ends up sloshing around in a warm, brown, sticky mess of its own creation.
