Cool Reel

Positioned above the main reels, the Cool Reel contains 2 rows made up of feature symbols, empty ice cubes, and blank cells. Feature symbols activate once they drop onto the main grid. • Row Swap – One pay symbol on its row is selected, and all symbols on the row change to match it. If the Flamingo, Toucan, Wild Egg, or wild symbol is selected, it replaces all other symbols with wilds. Any extra Row Swap on the same row extends the symbol replacement to its column. A big symbol will be completely replaced. A big Row Swap symbol replaces all symbols on the rows it covers with the same symbol. If a symbol position is affected by 2 Row Swap actions, it becomes wild. Wilds are not replaced, and scatters or Pearls are temporarily replaced before reverting back.
• Wild Symbols – Substitute for all regular paying symbols. Wilds have the same value as the highest paying symbol if they make a wild only win.
• Locked Wild – These stay on screen for the number of wins they display before being removed. They remain on the grid between spins in the bonus game until used.
• Pearls – Are used to trigger the Elmo Drop.

Character Features

Tropicool 5’s character features include Wild Eggs, Wild Birds, Elmo Drop, and Mystery Crocodile.

• Wild Eggs – Function as a sticky wild. If there is one or more empty positions on its column, it transforms into a Wild Bird Toucan or Flamingo.
• Wild Birds – Formed from the Wild Egg. They behave as wilds that disappear once they’re part of a win. Based on the number of empty positions, their size can range from 1×2 to 1×5.
• Elmo Drop – May activate in the base game or bonus round once no more wins are available, and Elmo collects a pearl. When it triggers, it clears all pay symbols from the top three main rows plus any remaining empty pearl symbols, letting symbols from the Cool Reel fall onto the grid. Each time Elmo collects, he has an equal chance to set off the feature. Collected pearl totals are stored per bet level.

Tropicool 5 keeps the franchise rolling with its bunch of lovable weirdos and a few fresh details to get to grips with. The core experience still revolves around the relationship between avalanches, the Cool Reel, and feature symbols dropping down into the main reels. Honestly, Tony and Fiona are probably more likely to be shown the door than this trio of mechanics. ELK Studios has also polished the presentation, so whether it rains rewards or not, the animations and effects feel slick, which adds to the overall fun.

One notable shift is that while the first four games used a 6×6 grid, Tropicool 5 has trimmed it down by a row. It’s not entirely clear why ELK Studios reduced the play area, though it does significantly cut the number of ways to win. Maybe it was done to make room for the new Golden symbols, which carry bigger multipliers the lower they appear on the reel. Either way, Golden symbols are a neat new addition. The ultra-cool Kyle the Crocodile can be a strong one too, because when he turns up, he generates Mystery symbols anywhere there’s space beneath him. And as in past entries, the Elmo effect stays wonderfully chill, since he can unload the entire Cool Reel onto the main reels whenever he decides to trigger.
