Tropicool 3: Slot Overview
Swedish software provider ELK Studios is known for its imagination, and one of its more eccentric creations is a world first inhabited by two birds, Tony Toucan and Fiona Flamingo. Tired of the yearly migration, they decided to build their own beach getaway… in Antarctica. The climate sounds questionable, but it’s certainly a destination for anyone who prefers peace and quiet. Tropicool 2 added a sloth called Elmo, and now the series continues with a third entry. Tropicool 3 sticks with the frosty vibe while introducing a fresh set of gameplay ideas.
Fresh, that said, comes with a caveat: the slanted symbol columns and gravity-style movement are clearly borrowed from ELK’s Cygnus range. The setting has shifted as well. Snow is still everywhere and the overall feel remains icy, but this time it looks more like Las Vegas than the far south of the globe. There’s presumably a story tying it together, though it wasn’t available at the time of review—so players can invent their own. Maybe Tony and Fiona are here to tie the knot. Maybe Elmo ran off with Fiona and they dashed to Vegas for a quick wedding. Take the plot wherever you like.

Pressing spin drops 6 columns into view, each column containing 6 symbols, creating up to 46,656 connecting paylines. Payouts land when matching symbols connect across at least 3 adjacent columns starting from the far-left side, and any win sets off the Avalanche feature. Tropicool 3 is a medium-high volatility slot and uses ELK Studios’ familiar RTP of 94%. The return stays identical whether you trigger bonuses via the X-iter or simply play with stakes of 20 c to $/€100 per game round.
As for symbols, the lower-value group is made up of four fruits frozen in ice, paying 0.25x the bet for 6 OAK. Above them are a lizard, a snake, a scarab, and bird icons as the premium symbols. Landing 6 matching high pays returns 0.5 to 5 times the bet. There are two wild types—standard wilds and locked wilds—and both replace any regular pay symbol. The key difference is that a locked wild stays in place for 3 wins before the Avalanche mechanic clears it away.
Tropicool 3: Slot Features

Tropicool 3 comes packed with extras, including the Cool Reel, Elmo’s Revenge, feature symbols, a free spins bonus game, a super free spins bonus game, and X-iter feature buys.
Cool Reel
The Cool Reel positioned above the grid contains 3 rows made up of feature symbols, scatter symbols, and empty symbols. Feature symbols are activated when they drop into the main grid. Each round begins with symbols falling into the main grid while new feature symbols sliding in from the right on the Cool Reel. Every win on the main grid is paid out, and the winning symbols (excluding any unused Locked Wilds) are removed from the reels; then the remaining symbols fall downward due to gravity. Next, symbols from the first row of the Cool Reel above the winning columns drop into the main grid and roll as far left or right as they can. Gravity affects the Cool Reel too, which is then replenished from the right. Any additional wins are paid, and the Avalanche cycle continues until no further wins appear.
Elmo’s Revenge
If an Elmo symbol makes it to the leftmost column, the Elmo’s Revenge feature activates by dropping the complete Cool Reel onto the main grid. When the Elmo symbol lands on the bottom of columns 2-6, it is removed and dropped down again into the column immediately to the left, if possible.
Feature Symbols
The feature symbols available in the game are these:
- Multiplier Symbol – boosts the win multiplier by x1 to x25 when it drops down from the Cool Reel.
- Row Swap – changes payout symbols on a line into the same symbol.
- Mystery – all turn into a shared pay symbol at the end of a drop.
Bonus Game
Landing 3, 4, 5, or 6 bonus scatter symbols grants 6, 9, 12, or 15 free spins, respectively. In free spins, the Cool Reel is repopulated with new feature symbols for each free drop, and the win multiplier is sticky between drops. Locked wilds remain on the grid between drops till fully used. Collecting Extra Drop symbols from the Cool Reel awards +1, +2, or +3 extra drops. In the base game, if 3 or more scatters appear at the same time as an Elmo symbol, the super bonus game is triggered. In that mode, 1 Elmo symbol is always in play on the main grid.
X-iter
Through the X-iter menu, players can choose from these bonus options:
- Bonus Hunt – 3x the bet purchases a round with more than triple the chance of triggering the bonus game.
- Locked Wilds – 25x the bet buys a round where 3 locked wilds drop onto the grid.
- Elmo’s Revenge – 50x the bet buys a round with a guaranteed Elmo symbol.
- Bonus Game – 100x the bet.
- Super Bonus Game – 500x the bet.

Tropicool 3: Slot Verdict
Most of Tropicool 3’s feature set feels recognisable, but ELK Studios has adjusted and refined the details enough to make it feel fairly distinct. Overall, the play experience comes across like the studio has stitched together elements from the Tropicool series with pieces of the Cygnus range into one strange—yet sometimes surprisingly strong—slot. On the theme side, Tropicool 3 takes a left turn compared to the first two titles, adding another layer of oddness to a franchise that was already unconventional. Frozen Vegas, or a Vegas-style backdrop with Ancient Egyptian hints? Sure, why not.
It’s a bit disappointing that the animal characters don’t feature on the screen or grid as prominently as they did in the original game, but Tropicool fans get a new mechanical spin on the formula in return. It isn’t completely unfamiliar, of course, since the same system drives the Cygnus range, yet it pairs nicely with the Cool Reel and the various treats that reel can drop into play. That makes Elmo’s Revenge one of the most sought-after moments, and it also adds extra punch to the super bonus game because an Elmo symbol stays visible throughout. The gravity effect can be irritating when it shifts symbols in unhelpful ways, but it can also be extremely rewarding when cascades fall into place exactly as you hoped. The ultimate payoff would be reaching Tropicool 3’s top win of 25,000x the bet – far higher than the first release, while matching Tropicool 2.
Overall, the Tropicool/Cygnus crossover largely works. Each part contributes its own style of teasing and potential reward, resulting in something that isn’t a blazing showcase of innovation, but does feel original thanks to how the mechanics are combined—giving players looking for something different a worthwhile alternative. Tropicool was a solid game, though blending two approaches instead of leaning hard into one sometimes risks softening the final identity, occasionally diluting rather than strengthening what makes it stand out.
