Tropicool: Slot Overview
Anyone who works in travel will recognise the familiar request: somewhere sunny. The exact destination often doesn’t matter, provided it fits the budget and promises warm weather. Trips to colder places are far less common. With that in mind, perhaps ELK Studio’s Tropicool offers a small reminder that you can still have fun at home, as its two stars embrace life in their icy hometown instead of chasing heat overseas.
Tropicool is a 6×6 grid slot set on a quirky island off the coast of Antarctica. Locals Tony Toucano and Fiona Flamingo grew tired of migrating every year and chose to make the best of what they had. The result is a mini paradise carved out of snow: palm trees, beach huts, frozen fruit, and drifting snowflakes. It’s a strange mix, yet it gives Tropicool plenty of personality, and the island looks peaceful—just very cold. A superbly produced, laid-back soundtrack deepens the vibe, occasionally slipping into a touch of reggae when things start to pop.
Much of the time the pace feels easygoing, but medium+ volatility (rated 7 of10) means Tropicool can suddenly defrost and turn wild without warning. Wins arrive at a steady 23.1%, with every hit setting off an avalanche wins system, and the overall return to player value is 95% in both standard play and bonus mode.
Although it looks like a grid slot, Tropicool actually runs like a traditional game: three or more matching symbols on adjacent reels pay. With no paylines to follow, matches can connect on any row, creating 46,656 ways to win. Because of that, individual symbol payouts aren’t huge by themselves, but the ways system helps, and free spins can introduce strong multipliers.
Most symbols are fruity—plums in blue, green, yellow, and red—followed by apples, coconuts, and then strawberries. A full line of 6 pays 0.3 to 2x your stake. The remaining pay symbols are Tony and Fiona, which appear three positions tall and pay 0.9x to 1.2x the bet for a line of 6. A nice perk with the characters is that they pay from any position, as long as they’re completely visible.
Tropicool: Slot Features
Avalanches can pull special symbols into play from the feature reel, while bonus symbols unlock free spins that increase returns via a progressive multiplier. On top of that, ELK’s X-iter menu adds 5 bonus game modes.
The avalanche feature removes winning symbols from the grid, letting new ones fall into place and potentially chain further wins. While this happens, watch the feature reel above the main reels; during cascades, if there’s an empty space beneath a special symbol on that reel, it drops onto the grid. It can land as a regular wild, a wild multiplier of x2-x5, a locked wild that remains on the grid for a set number of wins, or a row swap symbol. The row swap symbol selects one symbol in its row (wilds and bonus symbols excluded) and changes all the others into that chosen symbol.
The big’ B’ is the bonus symbols, and when 3, 4, 5, or 6 appear, players receive 10, 15, 20, or 25 free drops, respectively. During free spins, two symbol types can appear on the feature reel: an extra spin symbol that adds +1, +2, or +5 free drops, or win multiplier symbols that raise the win multiplier by +1, +2, or +5. When free spins are triggered naturally, the win multiplier begins at x1 and carries over between drops.
X-iter allows players buy-ins to 5 different game modes:
- A guaranteed win can be bought for 5x the bet.
- A game round with 3 locked wilds initially dropping in costs 25x the bet.
- Triggering free drops with 3 -6 bonus symbols costs 100x.
- Triggering free drops with 3-6 bonus symbols and a starting win multiplier of x5 costs 200x the bet.
- Triggering free drops with 3-6 bonus symbols and a starting win multiplier of x10 costs 500x the bet.
The return rate for all X-iter game modes remains the same at 95% RTP.
Tropicool: Slot Verdict
Even if it isn’t as far-out as some of ELK’s more mind-bending titles, Tropicool still feels genuinely distinctive, blending a theme and mechanics pairing you don’t really see elsewhere. The production values are exactly what you’d expect from ELK: sharp high-definition visuals, fluid animation, and polished audio. The spinning feature reel gives a slight Cluster Slide vibe, only without the grid tilt that can make things uncomfortable.
It may not be as frantic or offer as many win ways as Nitropolis or Nitropolis 2, but notably, all three share the same top potential of 10,000x the bet. In Tropicool, the key swing factor is the win multiplier, which reached x20 during testing. That started at x10 from a Super Bonus, though—and still didn’t manage to get back to even. The RTP is also worth flagging: at 95%, it’s likely right on the edge of what some players will accept.
One important thing to note with X-citer: once you select a bonus mode, it stays active until you leave it. So if you’ve just completed a Super Bonus, pressing spin won’t start a normal drop—it will take another 500x from your balance and launch another Super Bonus. Some will spot this immediately, but it’s worth remembering to avoid an expensive slip-up.
Overall, there’s little to criticise in Tropicool, which ends up being a carefully crafted, one-of-a-kind slot. Whether it inspires more staycations or sparks interest in colder getaways is another question.
