Treasures of Kilauea: Slot Overview
Volcanic eruptions rank among nature’s most breathtaking spectacles. They offer a window into the immense forces churning beneath the surface—able to devastate, yet also to build. The Hawaiian islands are a perfect example, having been shaped by volcanic activity that started more than 70 million years ago. Today, Hawaii has 6 active volcanoes, including Kilauea, which takes centre stage in Treasures of Kilauea, an online slot from Microgaming associate PearFiction Studios.
In Treasures of Kilauea, PearFiction gives their volcano plenty of personality. Perched at the side of the screen, it blinks, giggles, snores, bubbles, and coughs, and at set moments it fires wild symbols onto the grid. Since volcanoes can feel intimidating, PearFiction has leaned into humour to soften the theme. Compared with something like Play’n GO’s Gold Volcano, this one feels far less foreboding, opting instead for a lively, fast-moving, brightly coloured style.
With volcano slots, it’s becoming increasingly common to tweak the reel layout into a vaguely volcanic silhouette. Gold Volcano used extra rows, Push Gaming’s Mount Magmas saved the idea for its bonus, and Treasures of Kilauea follows the trend in a more subtle way. Here, the grid is made up of 5 reels with four symbols each, plus a 3-symbol horizontal reel across the top, giving it a mini-Megaways vibe. Under the hood sits a highly volatile math model with four RTP settings, topping out at 96.35% and dropping as low as 86.79%. The game runs on any device, and players can choose stakes from 10 p/c to $/€50 per spin.
Even though it looks a bit like mini-Megaways, Treasures of Kilauea offers only a small slice of that style’s win potential. Wins are formed across 40 fixed paylines, paying when three or more matching symbols land from the leftmost reel. Pay values are, frankly, modest, beginning with 0.5-0.6x the bet for five-of-a-kind on the 10-A low symbols. The premium mask symbols aren’t much stronger either, with five-of-a-kind returning 0.9-1.2x the bet. Wilds and multipliers are present, but there’s only so far standard line wins can carry Treasures of Kilauea.
Treasures of Kilauea: Slot Features
To mirror Kilauea’s reputation as one of the world’s most active volcanoes, Treasures of Kilauea runs on a system where frames are gathered and then filled with wilds every ten spins. On top of that, every 50 spins the volcano throws additional wilds onto the reels. Alongside these timed boosts are a couple of less frequent additions: free spins with extra wilds and five jackpots.
Lava Spins and Eruption Spins
When Volcano Symbols land, they add a frame to the position they occupy. Then, on the 10th spin, every symbol sitting in a framed spot is converted into a wild symbol. Once wins have been evaluated, the Lava Frames are removed. Eruption Spins happen every 50 spins. On an Eruption Spin, the Lava Frames still turn symbols wild as usual, and extra wilds are also awarded at random. If a wild lands on top of another wild, it upgrades into an x2 wild. Two counters above the reels show how many spins remain until the next Lava Spin or Eruption Spin. Lava Frames and spin counters are stored separately for each bet level.
Free Spins
Free Spins symbols can land in both the base and bonus game. Hitting at least three in the base game activates the free spins feature, where players choose one of the following options:
- Three scatters – 15 free spins with 5 wilds, 10 free spins with 7 wilds, or 5 free spins with 10 wilds.
- Four scatters – 30 free spins with 5 wilds, 20 free spins with 7 wilds, or 10 free spins with 10 wilds.
- Five scatters – 45 free spins with 5 wilds, 30 free spins with 7 wilds, or 15 free spins with 10 wilds.
In free spins, wilds are placed into random positions on the game board. Retriggers grant the same number of free spins as the option originally selected.
Jackpots
The middle position on the top reel is highlighted with a golden frame. If an Idol symbol lands inside that frame, it triggers the Jackpot Wheel, which spins to award 1 of 5 jackpots. These are the Micro, Mini, Minor, Major, and Mega, paying 18x, 30x, 100x, 500x, and 5,000x the bet, respectively.
Treasures of Kilauea: Slot Verdict
For certain players, it’s easy to see Treasures of Kilauea landing in the “just right” category. It’s packed with familiar slot mechanics, yet PearFiction has bundled them into something that still feels entertaining. The ten-spin wild-cycle concept pops up from time to time, in titles ranging from IGT’s Scarab to Kalamba Game’s Caribbean Anne (amongst others). Here, it returns and is strengthened by an additional 50 spin mechanic. Together, these two accumulation systems did an impressive job of keeping results hovering close to baseline for much of the time—though your experience could, of course, vary significantly from what we saw during the review.
It seems PearFiction has created that sense of balance by offsetting the extra wilds with low-paying symbols. That trade-off would be easier to accept in a game with a massive number of ways. But in Treasures of Kilauea, with only 40 paylines, even a full screen of the top symbol pays just 48x the bet. Sure, an Eruption Spin can shower the grid with x2 Wilds, but even then, a truly huge payout doesn’t feel especially likely.
As a result, meaningful profit is difficult without activating the Jackpot feature—and that turned out to be fairly hard to do. During free spins, the Idol symbol appeared to tease far more often than it did in the base game, suggesting the bonus round may offer better odds of reaching a jackpot. With that in mind, could it be best to choose the option with the highest number of free spins when the feature triggers? You’d receive fewer wilds, but line wins are weak anyway, while extra spins may simply mean more chances to land an Idol. This is only a theory, though, as there are no official figures to support it.
In many respects, Treasures of Kilauea feels like classic PearFiction: bright and colourful, built around mostly standard extras, and leaning on a jackpot mechanic to unlock its biggest potential. If you like jackpot slots that keep the base game active with frequent—if limited—features in a playful setting, Treasures of Kilauea could be a good fit.
