Toro Shogun: Slot Overview

Few duos in online slots are as fondly remembered as the hulking black bull Toro and his Matador sidekick. They first burst onto the casino scene in 2016 with Wild Toro, a release that quickly earned plenty of fans. To mark the 5 year anniversary, ELK Studios launched a Wild Toro World Tour, bringing out Wild Toro 2, Book of Toro, and Toro 7s. Not long after that came Buffalo Toro, and if you thought the pair might be done globe-trotting, think again. Toro and the Matador return once more, this time heading to Japan in an online slot called Toro Shogun.

One of the standout aspects of the Toro series is that ELK Studios hasn’t confined it to a single format. Up to now we’ve seen, for instance, the original style, a ‘book of’ take, and here a semi, sort of ‘Gold’ interpretation. The Land of the Rising Sun is presented with a charmingly cartoony look—towering mountains, gnarled trees, and bright green ground cover. And that little house in the upper-right of the screen surely has an incredible outlook over the scenery, with sunsets that must be a treat for anyone visiting. A light, Eastern-tinged soundtrack rounds everything off, with the game’s audio and visuals working together in a really polished way.

At the center is Toro Shogun’s reel set, built from 5 reels and 4 rows—at least initially, since the reels are able to expand. Payouts land when identical symbols connect from the far-left reel across adjacent reels, linked diagonally or horizontally. If a 5 OAK win lands, the Both Ways feature kicks in, so wins pay left to right and right to left until that game round finishes. Winning symbols are removed and replaced by at least 1 wild plus new symbols dropping in from above. Winning reels also expand by the number of symbols cleared from them, up to a maximum of 10 high at the most. Once the winning chain ends, the reels return to their default size. Randomly, Max Rows may trigger, expanding up to 5 reels 10 rows high.

Classed as a medium-high volatile game, Toro Shogun comes with an RTP of 94%, whether you’re staking 20 p/c to $/€100 per spin in the standard mode or playing via the X-iter in bonus mode. The paytable starts with 3 Mah-jong-like tiles featuring dragons as the low symbols, then moves up to an orange pierced by a dagger, a fan, a flower, and a Shogun character. A 5 OAK winning way returns 0.3-0.5x the bet for the low pays or 0.75-10x the bet for the high pays. Wilds, in any form, can assist in forming wins by substituting for any paying symbol.

Toro Shogun: Slot Features

Moving on to the extras, Toro Shogun includes Toro the Walking Wild, Toro Goes Wild, Matador Respins, Shogun Mode, the Bonus Game, and X-iter features.

Walking Wild

Toro acts as a Walking Wild and, when he lands, he creates respins. Toro moves one position to the left with each respin, or whenever he helps form a winning combo, continuing until he reaches the leftmost reel.

Matador Respin

When 2 or more Matador symbols land, a Matador Respin is triggered, and the Matadors lock in place and are sticky. If 1 or more Matador symbols appear, another respin is awarded. Matadors have no value as symbols.

Toro Goes Wild

Landing a Toro while Matadors are in view, or landing 1 or more Matadors while a Toro is in view triggers Toro Goes Wild. In this sequence, Toro moves vertically then horizontally to knock Matador symbols off, leaving wild symbols on its path. Toro keeps going until every Matador has been beaten.

Shogun Mode

If all five reels reach 10 positions high, then Shogun Mode activates. While Shogun Mode is running, the low-pay symbols are removed from the reels, and Both Ways is active. Shogun Mode finishes when the spin ends.

Bonus Game

Landing 3 bonus symbols on reels 1, 3, and 5 starts the bonus game with 7 free spins – and the bonus game can be retriggered. Each bonus symbol that lands during the bonus game increases the Bonus Multiplier by +1. Landing 2 bonus symbols boosts it by +2 to the Bonus Multiplier, while 3 bonus symbols increase it by +3 to the Bonus Multiplier and also adding 7 free spins. The Bonus Multiplier affects every win already in play and all wins that follow.

Landing 3 bonus symbols during Shogun Mode triggers the Shogun Bonus, which is free spins played with permanent Shogun Mode active.

X-iter

To access bonus mode, players can open the X-iter feature buy menu and select one of the following options:

  • Bonus Hunt – 3x the bet for more than triple the chance of triggering the bonus game.
  • Toro Spin – 10x the bet for a game round with a guaranteed Toro.
  • Shogun Spin – 25x the bet for a game round on a 10-row grid, Shogun Mode and Both Ways active.
  • Buy Bonus – 100x the bet to buy the Bonus game.
  • Shogun Bonus – 500x the bet to buy the Shogun Bonus.

Toro Shogun: Slot Verdict

Toro Shogun is where slot legacy, refined production, and smart mechanics smash together—much like a furious bull charging straight at an unlucky Matador. Put simply, Toro Shogun feels like the upbeat outcome of a Wild Toro meeting a Gold slot. It highlights ELK Studios’ strong track record for grid-expanding gameplay, something it has delivered time and again across multiple Kane slots, along with titles like Nitropolis, and it adds plenty of extra touches that help the whole package feel genuinely new. Ultimately, if you enjoy ELK Studios’ approach to game design (even if you’re less keen on some of the figures), Toro Shogun delivers that style in full.

It’s arguably even more appealing if you’re especially fond of Toro and the Matador. Their bull-versus-human routine gets another entertaining chapter here, and the trail of wilds Toro leaves behind remains as enjoyable as ever. Choosing Connected Paylines instead of straight ways brings advantages and drawbacks. In certain respects it can be less generous, since it may be harder to land those outrageous, grid-filling wins that some Gold slots are known for—though Shogun Mode could help offset that. Not a complaint, just a note. Overall, it’s difficult to find fault with Toro Shogun’s add-ons. From Both Ways payouts, to the two bonus games, to the core win and grid-expansion flow, it all works nicely, as the kids say—or used to say.

With a win cap of 25,000x the bet, the only small quibble (aside from the RTP) is that the game can feel a little less Toro-heavy at times. In other words, Toro the bull doesn’t appear constantly, and with the action set in Japan, you don’t get the steamy Spanish vibe that some earlier entries carried. Still, it’s a minor point, because Toro does show up often enough, and Toro Shogun is a superbly crafted release. Even in the finer details—like animations syncing perfectly with the sound effects—it feels premium across the board. And for anyone who already loves Toro and his Matador companion, Toro Shogun is absolutely one to check out.
