The Secret of Machu Picchu: Slot Overview
The Secret of Machu Picchu is a South America-themed online slot from developer Stakelogic, created in collaboration with Touchstone Games. Machu Picchu, naturally, is the renowned Incan citadel perched high in the mountains of southern Peru. It dates to around the 15th century and is sometimes described as a royal retreat where an Incan ruler might have stayed after a military campaign. The site was occupied for roughly 80 years before it was deserted, potentially linked to Spanish conquests and possibly also because many inhabitants died from smallpox carried in by travellers.
Still, that’s the standard history you’ll find online. Maybe there’s something much more mysterious happening at Machu Picchu than it first appears. And if there isn’t, we can at least imagine there is while spinning The Secret of Machu Picchu. Stakelogic has done a solid job recreating the setting: ancient stone ruins sit in the background as symbols drop onto the grid, with a hazy mountain panorama filling out the scene. The palette shifts from lush greens in the base game to warmer, more secretive golden tones in free spins. You also get a clearer view when extra symbol rows are added and the camera pulls back. When that happened, the similarities to ELK Studios’ Gold slots—already hinted at—felt even more pronounced.

The Secret of Machu Picchu runs on a grid that expands from its default layout of 6 columns and 4 rows, reaching up to a maximum of 7 rows tall. As the grid grows, the ways to win rise too, moving from 4,096 up to 117,649. To play, you choose a stake of 20 c to $/€200, with the option to enable the Super Stake ante bet. Activating Super Stake doubles the wager in exchange for three times more free spins features. The Secret of Machu Picchu uses a medium-high volatile math model and delivers an RTP of 96%, regardless of whether Super Stake is enabled.
Wins are formed left to right with at least 3 matching symbols on adjacent reels starting from the leftmost reel. The paytable begins with four stone block symbols featuring geometric patterns, followed by another four patterned stone blocks, then a compass, a lamp, a map, and an explorer. The 8 stone block symbols return 0.3 to 0.75 times the bet for a 6-of-a-kind, while the 4 higher-paying symbols award 1.5 to 5 times the bet for a 6-symbol win.
The Secret of Machu Picchu: Slot Features

Digging into its feature set, The Secret of Machu Picchu includes cascades, a Lucky Llama symbol, multiplier symbols, and a free spins round featuring Sun God and Sun Gate symbols.
Cascades
The cascade mechanic clears winning symbols from the grid, then refills the spaces and also adds an extra row, boosting the number of ways to win. The grid may expand up to 7 rows high. Cascades keep going until no further ways wins are created.
Lucky Llama
Lucky Llamas act as wild symbols and can replace any regular pay symbol. If a Lucky Llama doesn’t contribute as a wild in a ways win, it activates the Luck Llama bonus, which removes the eight lowest pay symbols from the reels and triggers a cascade to give you another shot at landing a win.
Multiplier Symbols
Multiplier symbols ranging from x2 and x50 can show up at any point. Every multiplier currently visible is totalled together and then applied to the overall win.
Free Spins
Hitting 3 or more scatter symbols triggers the free spins feature. If scatters land again during the feature, extra free spins are awarded. Free spins are also where the Sun God and Sun Gate symbols can appear. Sun God symbols arrive with monetary values attached, and these values are paid out for each Sun Gate symbol visible.

The Secret of Machu Picchu: Slot Verdict
It’s hard not to suspect The Secret of Machu Picchu took cues from ELK Studios’ Gold series, as mentioned earlier in the overview. We also know ELK Studios has stopped producing Kane games, wrapping the line up with Valhall Gold. That seems to have left a gap for expanding-reel titles, which J-POP and now The Secret of Machu Picchu have tried to move into. While J-POP went in a very different thematic direction, The Secret of Machu Picchu feels like a more direct rival, thanks to its exotic setting and charismatic explorer lead. It looks and sounds good, and the location choice is appealing, yet throughout the review it continued to feel like The Secret of Machu Picchu wasn’t quite a must-play.
The feature package lands in a similar place. There are moments where things can get interesting, but nothing stands out as especially groundbreaking in a way that would truly position The Secret of Machu Picchu as the next in line for Kane’s crown. Part of what held it back was how difficult it was to picture truly standout outcomes, along with the absence of that tense feeling that the game could suddenly erupt—something the Gold slots can deliver. Multiplier symbols do appear, for example, but the lack of a persistent win multiplier in free spins was noticeable. And while the Sun God/Sun Gate pairing is a welcome additional route to a payout, it felt a little underpowered, even though multiplier symbols can increase collected values, which helps. The game’s winning potential wasn’t provided, which may or may not have swung things more in The Secret of Machu Picchu’s favour.
Even if no major secrets were revealed during testing of what is a respectable slot, The Secret of Machu Picchu also underlined how far ahead ELK Studios remains. Those Gold slots tend to have more refinement, more imaginative mechanics, and arguably stronger immersion. The Secret of Machu Picchu makes a decent showing, but in this matchup it ultimately came across as the weaker challenger.
