The Cage: Slot Overview

It’s worth pausing to acknowledge the brave (or slightly unhinged) people who grind away in the gym lifting heavy, wake up before sunrise to hit the road, and then step into a cage to dish out punishment—or take it. There’s a whole lot of pounding involved, and it takes a special mindset to endure that kind of suffering for a shot at glory. Plenty of people would rather watch, though. The MMA Facts website cites research suggesting 300 million fans worldwide, and says the sport (if you want to label it that way) has a “broadcast reach of over a billion households in 165 countries”. In short, loads of people enjoy watching others knock seven bells out of each other.

Stepping into the cage is The Cage, an online slot from controversial software house Nolimit City. The Cage lets players square up against five chunky opponents as they chase glory and, ideally, pick up some winnings along the way. The base game plays out from a birds-eye view inside the ring, with the crowd roaring from outside—so hopefully you’re ready for the action. A couple of Nolimit City titles came to mind once The Cage got going: the cartoonish, rough-edged vibe of something like San Quentin xWays, and the grid style previously seen in Dead Canary. Backed by a throbbing soundtrack with crowd shouts, the base game bubbles with menace, occasionally erupting into big-win celebrations featuring brutal hits and booming audio stings, or dangling a scatter tease, all while running on its distinctive slanted, cascading setup.

The base game grid is arranged in a 3-4-3-4-3-4-3 formation with 5,184 ways to win. Wins land when matching symbols appear on adjacent reels from the leftmost side in the base game and from both sides in the bonus round. Winning symbols are removed via the cascade mechanic, allowing new symbols to drop into the empty spaces. If no fresh win forms, the cascade chain stops. Rated highly volatile (8 out of 10), The Cage has a hit frequency of 31.98% and offers three RTP settings, with 96.05% as the highest. Feature purchases alter the return values, and those details are listed below. For staking, players can choose bets from 20 p/c up to $/€100.

The symbols reveal who you’ll be trading blows with, as the premium pays are Big Fatty, Ironjaw, One Glove Man, The Constrictor, and Little Dragon. The lower pays are less exciting, consisting of 10-A card ranks. In the base game, a 7 OAK win pays 1.5 to 2 times the bet for the low pays and 2.25 to 3 times the bet for the highs. Enter free spins, where the grid expands to 9 reels wide, and a 9 OAK win returns 2.5-3x the bet for lows and 3.25-4x the bet for the premiums. Now it’s time to wrap your hands and look at the features.

The Cage: Slot Features

The Cage slot
The Cage slot – bonus tease

Just like real-world cage fighting has plenty of rules, The Cage comes with a solid set of mechanics too. The feature lineup includes Wild Knockout xBombs, Roundhouse Kicks, Title Fight Freespins, and the Nolimit Bonus.

Wild Knockout xBombs

Wild Knockout xBombs substitute for all symbols except scatters. A Knockout symbol explodes symbols in a cross pattern, except scatters and other Knockout symbols, increasing the win multiplier for the next collapse by +1. All Knockout symbols explode before the next collapse.

Roundhouse Kick

When 3, 4, 5, or 6 identical symbols line up diagonally in the base game, and there is no winning combination, a Roundhouse Kick is triggered. The symbols that caused it are removed, and they create 1 or more wild symbols in the middle positions of the alignment – 3, 4, 5, or 6 removed symbols award 1, 2, 3, or 4 Wild Knockout xBombs, respectively. Wild Knockout xBombs then increase the win multiplier by +1 for the next collapse. All other symbols explode except Knockout or scatter symbols.

Title Fight Freespins

This is where The Cage starts to feel a little Street Fighter 2-ish. Scatter symbols may land anywhere, and hitting 3 of them launches Title Fight Freespins. The grid becomes 3-3-3-2-2-2-3-3-3 in layout, with 4 special title belt booster positions in the middle of the reel. The 4 title belt boosters are inactive in the first fight but activate one by one as fights progress. Wins pay both ways during Title Fight Freespins. Each bout is won by landing enough blows on the opponent. When the Uppercut symbol appears, it deducts 1 hit point from an opponent. Once an opponent is knocked out, the round moves to the next fight:

  • Fight 1 – Jim “Big Fatty” Johnson: 3 hit points, +3 spins awarded when beat.
  • Fight 2 – Kenny “Ironjaw” Shambles: 3 hit points, +3 spins awarded when beat.
  • Fight 3 – Artie “One Glove Man” Jefferson: 4 hit points, +3 spins awarded when beat.
  • Fight 4 – Grayson “The Constrictor” Royce: 5 hit points, +5 spins awarded when beat.
  • Fight 5 – Wai “Little Dragon” Le: Unlimited hit points.

A title belt can trigger only once per spin. If it doesn’t activate on the first drop, it may still do so on later cascades. Uppercut symbols do not land in fight 5, so to defeat Wai Le, you’ll need to become the Greatest of All Time (i.e., hit the max win). But there’s more—beating opponents also unlocks modifiers:

  • Title Belt 1 – when Big Fatty is defeated, a symbol multiplier is awarded in a special position for the next upcoming fights. Instances of low-pay symbols landing there are boosted by x2.
  • Title Belt 2 – when Ironjaw is defeated, a symbol transform booster is awarded in a special position for the next upcoming fights. Low-paying symbols landing here are transformed into the symbol of the opponent.
  • Title Belt 3 – when One Glove Man is defeated, an additional symbol transform booster is awarded in a special position for the next upcoming fights. Low symbols landing in this position are transformed into the symbols of the opponent.
  • Title Belt 4 – when The Constrictor is defeated, the final level awards all previous boosters plus an extra sticky Wild at a special position.

Nolimit Bonus

The Nolimit Bonus effectively lets players bypass the warm-up, by purchasing a fight with Big Fatty for 68x the bet (max RTP 96.13%), One Glove Man for 198x the bet (max RTP 96.15%), or Little Dragon Title fight for 498x the bet (max RTP 96.33%). Alternatively, the Lucky Draw awards one of those 3 Title Fights for 279x the bet (max RTP 96.27%).

The Cage: Slot Verdict

To circle back to the opening point, watching adults batter each other senseless isn’t for everyone—and stepping into The Cage won’t be either. Much like its distant cousin Dead Canary, The Cage is far from a classic slot where you press spin, five reels whirl, and matching symbols land neatly on paylines for an easy payout. In fight terms, this isn’t just reckless haymakers until someone drops. It’s a more technical contest than that. For starters, the setup—similar to ELK Studios’ Cygnus series—uses a gravity-like system to drop symbols into place. Combine that with the unusual pay method and you may need a little time to get comfortable with how it all works. Familiarity with Dead Canary will help, though the grid expansion in Title Fight Freespins adds another layer, and the switch to paying both ways there is a welcome twist.

Title Fight Freespins are likely where the biggest adrenaline spikes will happen, but the base game holds its own. The grid configuration and pay approach, paired with xBombs and Roundhouse Kicks, keeps things moving, and in our test sessions the naturally triggered free spins showed up fairly often—relatively speaking. Of course, that doesn’t mean The Cage will always behave that way. Nolimit City slots have a reputation for being punishing at times. Still, with volatility rated 8 out of 10, The Cage isn’t quite as savage as some of the studio’s other releases. Some of the other figures are less inspiring, though. For instance, if you do manage to reach GOAT status, the max win is under half of Dead Canary at 25,000x the bet. Another number to note is that the max win is likely around 1 in 35 million, versus Dead Canary’s 1 in 7 million.

Putting the stats aside, The Cage lands a pretty nasty roundhouse kick to the jaw. The feature set and reel layout made for a lively, memorable session, and the visuals and audio are top-notch. Nolimit City has once again chosen an offbeat theme and delivered it with its usual high level of execution. It may not be the GOAT, but The Cage offers a distinctive gambling experience that’s hard to find elsewhere.
