Tahiti Gold (ELK Studios): Review
Few ELK releases have sparked as much buzz and anticipation as Ecuador Gold. Its popularity is easy to see: Youtube is packed with big win clips, and even three months after launch it still sits among our five most-read weekly articles. In an industry that moves at breakneck speed—where player attention can be as fleeting as a goldfish’s memory—that’s a notable feat. It’s even more remarkable when you remember how small the studio is next to heavyweights like NetEnt and Microgaming.

With those figures in mind, ELK Studios quickly moved to line up a follow-up. In Tahiti Gold, the bold adventurer Kane returns looking stronger than ever, draped in his Ecuadorian riches like royalty—quite literally. With war paint across his face and a golden crown on his head, he now resembles a crazed conqueror more than a curious explorer. Aside from Kane seemingly losing the plot, the game stays close to the familiar groundwork of Ecuador Gold.
Both titles use the same symbol drop system, and both are built around 6 columns with 4 to 8 rows, letting the win ways expand from 4096 up to 262,144 ways to win. You also get the same Mega symbols reaching up to 4×4, plus the exact same RTP of 96.1%. So what’s actually different? Read on to find out.
Like the original, Tahiti Gold comes with vivid colours and lively animation. Whether it’s an upgrade visually is up for debate, but the setting is clearly richer and more imposing. The action takes place in a tropical bay, with the reels framed by totems, and a background featuring green mountains, turquoise waters, and a shipwreck.
A tribal-inspired soundtrack helps build the atmosphere. There’s plenty to follow on the reels, which is no surprise for a slot offering such a huge number of win ways. You’ll find 4 low-value wooden-carved shapes, along with 4 mid-tier symbols shown as lizzards, hammer sharks, turtles and toads. Higher still are the 3 totem face masks, with the top mask paying 1.80 times your stake for 6 of a kind. The premium symbol is Kane himself—hit 6 of him and you’ll win 3.50 times your stake. A wild symbol is also present, substituting for all standard symbols.
Tahiti Gold (ELK Studios): Features
As with the earlier game, Tahiti Gold runs on the Avalanche engine. When a winning combination lands, the involved symbols disappear, making room for new ones to fall in from above. If fresh wins keep forming, the grid grows taller, increasing the number of paylines. Beginning at 4 rows and 4,096 ways to win, the grid expands as follows:
- 4 rows with 4,096 paylines
- 5 rows with 15,625 paylines
- 6 rows with 46,656 paylines
- 7 rows with 117,649 paylines
- 8 rows with 262,144 paylines
Returning from Ecuador Gold are the Big Symbols. Super, mega and epic symbols in sizes 2×2, 3×3 and 4×4 can drop during any avalanche, and they may even smash smaller symbols as they fall to help create back-to-back avalanches.
A brand-new element, however, is the Wild Forge symbol, which can appear on reels 3, 4, 5 and 6 only. When it lands, it locks for the current avalanche and fills any empty positions beneath it with wilds.
Another fresh feature is the Eye of Tiki symbol. When 2 or more land, they link together with beams of light, clearing all symbols in the area between them and also adding an extras row of symbols at the top.
Lastly, there’s the bonus symbol that activates the Free Drops Bonus. You can hit up to 2 on each reel—landing 3, 4, 5, or 6 bonus symbols anywhere awards 10, 15, 20 or 25 free drops respectively. During the feature, landing 3 or more bonus symbols will retrigger it.
The look and feel shifts dramatically in the Free Drops Bonus: day turns to night, and the symbols shine with an eery fluorescent glow—perhaps because Kane has sampled one too many toads. Either way, you begin with the safety level at 4 rows and 4,096 win ways, and every winning symbol drop increases the safety level by 1 row (and it never resets).
At full expansion, the bonus is played on a 6×8 grid featuring 262,144 paylines. During the bonus, both the Wild Forge and Eye of Tiki mechanics are active as well—with the Wild Forge staying locked in place for the entire bonus if it lands.
Tahiti Gold (ELK Studios): Verdict
Doubling the potential compared to Ecuador Gold (5000x vs 2500x), plus adding a couple of new mechanics for extra variety, is honestly enough to make this a strong sequel. You could argue ELK Studios has kept things a little too familiar—and yes, we were hoping for something more distinctive—but since the limited potential was the main drawback of Ecuador Gold, ELK made the right call by boosting the max win while staying faithful to the original. The result isn’t a total reinvention, but rather a more polished take, which is fine—so long as it doesn’t become an easy routine.
With its updated paytable, Tahiti Gold feels like what Ecuador Gold should have delivered from the start, at least for players who want more punch and payoff. Excellent gameplay, fun features, and improved potential—wrapped in a slick visual package—should satisfy existing Ecuador Gold fans while bringing in new ones too.
