Taco Brothers Derailed: Slot Overview

There’s an old line about how, in a gold rush, the real money is in selling shovels—and it’s not wrong. But running a mining-supplies business takes effort, and there are always villains like Evil Captain Diaz who prefer to simply steal other people’s gold… and their freedom. That sets the scene for Taco Brothers Derailed by ELK Studios, the third entry in the series and the biggest, most taco-packed instalment yet.

The first Taco Brothers game was set in the quiet village of Santa Maria, and that’s where Derailed takes us back. This time, though, a gold rush has arrived, promising “gold, tacos, and trains for everyone.” It sounds great—until Captain Diaz shows up again to spoil the fun with his shady schemes. Your task is to join forces with the three brothers and the mysterious Señorita, lend a hand, and ideally pick up some winnings along the way. Visually, Derailed is moodier than the bright, sunny original, and Santa Maria doesn’t exactly scream “boomtown.” It feels like a darker take on Wild Toro 2, missing some of the first game’s feel-good charm, although the soundtrack keeps things lively with upbeat Spanish flair.

It’s wild to think Taco Brothers part one launched back in 2015, so it’s no shock that a couple of stats have shifted direction since then. The max win is the most noticeable change, but other elements have moved too—volatility has been pushed up to High (7 out o 10), while RTP has gone the other way, landing at 95%. That RTP applies whether you’re playing the standard mode, where spins cost 20 p/c to $/€100, or using one of the five X-iter modes.

The grid has expanded as well. The playfield is now made up of 6-reels and 4-rows, with 466 connecting paylines running through it. Wins start from the leftmost reel and pay left to right across adjacent reels, but symbols must connect horizontally or diagonally. The three brothers are the top-paying icons, delivering 5-50x the bet for six of a kind. Under them come shakers, whistles, skulls, lanterns, and safes, which award 0.5-2x the bet for a six-symbol hit. Taco Brothers Derailed also brings plenty of wild activity, including a standard regular wild. All wilds substitute for any paying symbol.

Taco Brothers Derailed: Slot Features

A number of Derailed’s mechanics clearly nod back to the original, although overall the game has been heavily reworked. First up are Walking Wilds and Walking Multiplier Wilds. Any Taco Brother pay symbol can land as a Walking Wild. These move one space to the left, and every step triggers a respin. Respins stop once the Walking Wilds drop off the left edge. Walking Wilds also turn any corresponding Taco Brother pay symbol wild. The Walking Multiplier Wild works differently: it appears on the top row only, carries a multiplier, and gives every regular wild on screen that same multiplier. Like the Brothers, it also produces respins each time it steps left.

Taco Train Heist

Bonus symbols can appear on reels 2, 3, 4 or 5, and landing exactly 3 of them activates the Taco Train Heist bonus round. During the bonus, all three Walking Wild Taco Brothers are guaranteed to land. Each brother is added to reel 6 one after another, and they move left one position per spin, taking along a multiplier that changes with each step.

Pico arrives first on the bottom row, creating a respin for every move left he makes. After Pico has walked off the grid or been imprisoned, the second brother, Pepe, lands on the right-hand side of the second row. Once Pepe has walked off or been imprisoned, Paso shows up on the third row. The bonus ends when all brothers are locked and/or have fallen off the grid. If a brother walks off the grid, his multiplier is added to the multipliers of remaining Walking Wild Taco Brothers in view.

Two additional symbols play major roles. The first is Captain Diaz, who appears only on the first reel. When he lands, he imprisons the brother closest to reel one, converting him into a locked, worthless blocker tile. The second is the Señorita, who lands on the rightmost reel. When she hits, she either unlocks a locked Taco Brother or sends the one closest to the first reel back to the sixth reel.

Taco Smash N’ Grab

This feature is triggered when 4 bonus symbols land in the base game. It begins with all three Walking Wild Taco Brothers plus a walking wild symbol stacked on reel 6. They move in sync one step to the left, and each movement triggers a respin. In this Super Bonus round, Captain Diaz is wild and can’t lock any Walking Wild Taco Brothers. If the Señorita lands, she pulls a Walking Wild Taco Brother to reel 6. The feature finishes once the Walking Wild Taco Brothers have walked off the grid.

X-iter

The other way to play Taco Brothers Derailed is via feature buy mode by pressing the X-iter button, where available. It offers these five choices:

  • Bonus Hunt – 2x the bet to double the chance of triggering the bonus game.
  • Walking Wild Taco Brother – 10x the bet for one spin with a guaranteed Walking Wild Taco Brother.
  • Walking Multiplier Wild – 25x the bet for one spin with a guaranteed Walking Multiplier Wild.
  • Bonus – 100x the bet to trigger the bonus game.
  • Super Bonus – 500x the bet to trigger Taco Smash N’ Grab.

Taco Brothers Derailed: Slot Verdict

Roughly seven years separate this release from the first Taco Brothers, and while some elements are familiar, plenty has evolved. ELK has clearly sharpened its craft in that time, and Taco Brothers Derailed shows a studio that’s happy to keep pushing forward. It brings back many of the original’s strongest ideas, applies significant feature adjustments, and folds in a few takeaways from games like Wild Toro 2. Once again, the core is about getting those Walking Wild Taco Brothers onto the reels, dodging the Captain, and chaining as many respins as you can. This time around, there are even more reasons to keep the brothers on screen for as long as possible.

Those reasons include multipliers and the way Walking Wilds convert matching Taco Brother symbols into wilds. Each mechanic is valuable alone, but together they become especially powerful in the Super Bonus Round. With all three brothers active in Taco Smash N’ Grab, they can flip a huge number of symbols into wilds. They also can’t be imprisoned, which can be frustrating in the standard bonus when dead tiles start clogging the grid. Interestingly, even though the Super Bonus felt more thrilling, we often saw better returns relative to the X-iter price from the regular bonus round. That’s surprising given there’s typically only one Walking Wild Taco Brother active at a time—unless the Señorita intervenes to free the bros, injecting extra momentum into the non-Super round. At peak taco levels, players can win up to 10,000 times their stake in Taco Brothers Derailed.

Taco Brothers Derailed delivers bigger swings than the earlier Taco Brothers titles, which were less volatile and offered lower top-end potential, and it’s an excellent continuation of the series. It highlights ELK’s upward trajectory, blending the best parts of the original with gameplay, tension, and excitement pushed to more extreme heights.
