Super StarTurns: Review

Hunting around for something new to try, we happened to come across Super StarTurns by chance. After a handful of spins, we walked away and swore we wouldn’t return. And yet, here we are again—drawn back by that same morbid curiosity you get when people slow down to stare at a crash. So, despite the dizzying visuals, like someone handed a five-year-old a box of crayons and let them run wild, and the painfully plain gameplay, we decided to give it another go.

Developed by Barcrest and powered by SG Digital, Super StarTurns is a 5-reel, 3-row slot with 40 paylines. With a vibrant colour palette and borrowing ideas from classic TV game shows, it includes Big Bet options and bonus wheels that can award multiplier wins as well as free spins. Stakes start at 10 cents per spin and climb as high as 500 Euros for those playing big.

Visually, it’s a chaotic jumble, to be honest. The play area feels cramped and is practically covered in buttons and blinking lights. Maybe it’s meant to be deliberately gaudy to capture the vibe of a cheesy old game show—if so, the humour didn’t land for us. On the reels you’ll find low-paying A, K and Q royals alongside cocktails, champagne bottles and bundles of cash. The red Ferarri is the best-paying symbol, though: hit 5 on a full payline and you’ll collect 5 times your stake. The wild does the usual substitution job and pays 250 times your stake for 5 on a payline.

Super StarTurns: Features

It hasn’t been particularly thrilling up to this point, but it becomes a little more engaging once you activate the Super StarTurns Bonus feature. To trigger it, you need to land 3 or more scatter symbols anywhere on the reels at the same time. Your prize is determined by the wheel, with these rewards available:

• Green Lucky Wheel – the lowest-value wheel, where you can win 4 to 8 free spins or an upgrade to the next wheel.
• Blue Lucky Wheel – the mid-tier wheel, offering 8 to 12 free spins, cash prizes of 20 and 50 times your stake or an upgrade to the top wheel.
• Red Lucky Wheel – once you reach the high-value wheel, you can win between 25 and 50 free spins or a cash prize of between 250 and 500 times your total stake.

If you end up playing the Free Spins you’ll spin on a separate reel set that contains only high-value symbols (so there are no A, K and Q royals). On top of that, every scatter symbol that lands on reel 5 grants an extra spin.

As is often the case with Barcrest, Super StarTurns lets you raise the pressure by increasing your wager and playing in Big Bet Mode. If you choose to use it, you’ll have three options:

• 20€ big bet – 5 spins, all scatters are double height symbols for better bonus frequency.
• 30€ big bet – 5 spins, includes the awards of the 20€ bet plus increased awards for Super StarTurns wheel bonus.
• €50 big bet – 5 spins, includes the awards of the 30€ bet plus further increased awards for Super StarTurns wheel bonus.

In the base game, you’re dealing with a rather poor 94% RTP. Switch on the Big Bet Mode, though, and the RTP rises as high as 98% which is well above the norm.

Super StarTurns: Verdict

Super StarTurns feels like what we’d expect from a bad acid trip. It doesn’t just resemble a kids’ fun house—it’s also awkwardly slow and jerky in play. The win count-ups are so drawn-out and irritating that we genuinely found ourselves hoping for dead spins just to keep our sanity intact. Combine that with the laughable 500x max win potential, and “painfully bland” is about the best way to sum it up. Unless you’re Monty Brewster from the 1985 American comedy film Brewster’s Millions, trying to blow $30 million in 30 days, there’s really no reason to even consider playing Super StarTurns.
