Super Massive Infinity Reels: Slot Overview
Backed by Relax Gaming, Super Massive Infinity Reels is the third title from software provider Hot Rise Games. It’s also the studio’s first release that skips their Hot 1 mechanic, choosing instead to use the well-known Infinity Reels system under licence from ReelPlay. It’s a mechanic plenty of developers keep returning to, and now the up-and-coming Hot Rise Games gets the chance to prove whether their spin on Infinity Reels can bring anything new to the table.
Before the reels start turning, the game sets the scene with a bit of lore. Super Massive is inspired by ‘the most powerful celestial object in the universe, where not even light can escape.’ It never directly says “black hole,” but that seems to be the implication. Supposedly, it’s a place where ‘the rules of space and time are beyond mankind’s understanding.’ It’s an enticing premise, though the rest of the presentation doesn’t really live up to it. Visually, Super Massive leans into a Tron-style vibe, with a glowing, throbbing wireframe backdrop—almost like a simplified Hadron Collider or the inside of an atom. After the dramatic build-up, the look feels a bit underwhelming.
Each paid spin begins on a 3×3 sized grid, paying when at least four matching symbols appear across the first two reels, or when three matching symbols land across all three reels. More fusion than fission, Super Massive runs on a medium volatile math model and delivers a theoretical return of 95.86%. This supposedly super-massive experience is playable on any device, with stakes ranging from 30 p/c to $/€90 per spin.
The symbol set also feels slightly at odds with the cosmic theme, since it’s not easy to link fruit and horseshoes with the universe’s most powerful objects. Still, the lineup goes from low to high with J, Q, K, A, musical notes, apples, horseshoes, lightning bolts, egg timers, and diamonds. Any wild that lands on a reel other than the first appears as a star wild, substituting for all regular pay symbols. When wilds land naturally, they create a copy of themselves that’s placed 2 or 3 reels to the right, ready to be used if extra reels are added to reach them. Once present, these duplicate wilds do not generate additional duplicates.
Super Massive Infinity Reels: Slot Features
Infinity Reels is the headline mechanic, and it functions like this: whenever a win hits that uses all three reels, a new reel is added to the right-hand side. If that extra reel extends the win, another reel is added, continuing until the win can’t be improved any further. When scatter symbols land, another reel will also be added, even if there is no winning combination.
Symbol Multiplier
At the beginning of each round, the symbol multiplier starts at x1. Every time a new reel is added, the symbol multiplier increases by +1, and there is no cap.
Free Spins
Hitting 6 scatter symbols anywhere awards 10 free spins. The triggering scatters display a number imprinted on them, and these figures are totalled to create the Repeating Prize. After that, scatters no longer carry values during free spins, but landing at least 5 of them grants +5 extra free spins. In addition, when wild symbols duplicate themselves in free spins, the new copy has the Repeating Prize value on it. If additional reels are added to reach these duplicated wilds, the Repeating Prize is awarded. If a newly added reel drops a wild on top of a duplicated wild position, its Repeating Prize value is doubled. These doubled wilds also double the symbol count for any symbol win they help form.
Buy Bonus
Free spins can be purchased for 100x the total bet. When activated, a spin is played that generates 6-10 scatter symbols.
Super Massive Infinity Reels: Slot Verdict
On paper, the game sounds exciting, with all the talk of celestial bodies, space, time, and the rest. In practice, it’s much less striking, and Super Massive feels on the back foot from the outset without ever really recovering. The Hypernova Infinity Reels vibes don’t help, and neither do the plain visuals. Hot Rise did try to do something different with the curved grid to blend it into the background and echo the spinning nature of Infinity Reels, but there’s a reason curved TVs fell out of fashion.
For the most part, the gameplay is classic Infinity Reels: land a win, add a reel, and keep going. Chaining together a long run of Infinity Reel expansions can be fun, though it’s a pity there’s no Infinity Bonus. Looking closer, the duplicating wild idea is decent, but it doesn’t really shine until free spins are in play. During free spins, collecting Repeating Prizes from duplicated wilds can be entertaining. Still, the end result feels a bit deflating—despite the “massive” and “infinity” language, the top payout a fortunate space cadet can pull from Super Massive is 1,042x the bet.
Super Massive comes across like a rushed engineer bolted an old blown HEMI engine onto a rocket and expected it to reach the moon. Somewhere between the concept stage and the finished product, something didn’t make the journey. Or perhaps it did, and Hot Rise simply hasn’t fully found its design rhythm yet. Whatever the reason, Super Massive—despite its bold, highly subjective title—doesn’t manage to ignite.
