Star Clusters Megaclusters: Overview
Whenever Aussie studio Big Time Gaming unveil a fresh title, it tends to turn heads. This one is worth watching closely too, as it could be their most significant step forward since Megaways first arrived. Big Time Gaming have earned a name for inventive design, and players now expect (and often insist on) something out of the ordinary with every launch.
Credit where it’s due: Big Time Gaming don’t simply ride on earlier wins. They could easily relax and live off the Megaways licensing income, yet they keep pushing out new ideas for players hungry for something different. In this case, you’re getting Big Time Gaming’s first cluster pays slot, and it’s powered by a brand-new engine called Megaclusters.
At first glance, the presentation feels both new and comfortably familiar: jewel-heavy symbols, a straightforward options area, and a clean backdrop that creates a cosmic, warp-speed vibe. If you’ve seen the old sci-fi parody Spaceballs, it’s reminiscent of that moment when the villains jump from light speed to ludicrous speed.

The sound deserves a mention as well, as it was something of a passion project for CEO Nik Robinson, who pulled out the Moog synth to craft the music and then stacked it with playful samples. Listen closely for nods to Street Fighter, Pac Man, Metal Gear, Bonanza, plus a couple of casino streamers and more. If you can, use headphones or speakers with decent bass—this house/psytrance-style track pairs with the visuals to deliver a surprisingly immersive sensory hit.
Once you start, you’re met with a 4×4 grid that looks like it’s housed inside a sleek retro gadget. This is a cluster pays game (with a twist you’ll soon see), so there are no paylines to follow. Wins happen when 5 matching symbols connect vertically or horizontally.
The paytable shows a selection of gem symbols in different colours – aqua, yellow, orange, green, blue, red, and purple. Payouts run from 10x to 50x when clusters reach 25+ symbols. To help connect clusters, there are two wilds available: a standard wild and a special Gold Wild.
Both wild types substitute for any regular paying symbol. The key difference is that when a Gold Wild contributes to a cluster, it applies a multiplier to that win. The multiplier begins at x1 and increases by +1 each time a Gold Wild is used in a cluster – with no limit. It resets on every new spin, unless free spins have been triggered.
With stakes from 20 p/c up to $/€20 per spin, Star Clusters Megaclusters is clearly a volatile slot, though it isn’t as extreme as some other Big Time Gaming titles. Players who’ve been burned by the studio’s more brutal volatility will likely welcome the slightly softer math model here. The RTP stays steady at 96.54%, a number most players will be comfortable with.
Star Clusters Megaclusters: Features
As soon as you land a win, the Megaclusters mechanic takes over, and it’s brilliantly straightforward. Every symbol that’s part of a winning cluster splits into 4 smaller symbols, opening the door to even more Megaclusters.
When wins occur with these smaller symbols are removed so fresh ones can drop into place, continuing until no further winning clusters are formed. In practical terms, during the base game each of the 16 positions on the 4×4 grid can split into 4 smaller tiles when involved in a win, pushing the total number of Megacluster up to a maximum of 64.
The headline feature is Free Spins, triggered when 5 or more consecutive reactions land in the base game – 2 free spins are awarded +1 spin for any extra reaction past the 5th. On top of that, any Gold Wild Multiplier built in the base game carries over from the triggering spins into the free spins round.
Free spins are played on a larger 8×8 grid. Just like in the base game, whenever a cluster hits, each winning symbol splits into 4 smaller ones. As a result, the grid can effectively expand to 16×16, potentially filling with 256 Megaclusters if it reaches the maximum. Gold Wilds behave the same as they do in the base game, and once the Gold Wild Multiplier reaches x10, +2 free spins are awarded – with no limits.
Star Clusters Megaclusters: Verdict
With any Big Time Gaming launch, it’s natural to examine it closely. Before getting into the new mechanic, it’s worth noting the overall package. It may feel a touch plain at first glance, but Star Clusters is the kind of slot that wins you over the more you play.
After a few sessions, it even turns into a mini game of trying to spot winning clusters before the game highlights them. It’s a bit silly, but genuinely fun—especially when the screen is packed with tiny symbols that keep splitting into even smaller ones. Visually, it can be pretty wild.
Big Time Gaming have created a distinctive space that’s easy—and enjoyable—to get absorbed in. That said, the stripped-back style can sometimes feel like a Sensation rave where everyone turns up dressed in white: definitely fun, but missing a bit of character.
Still, when you’ve got something as smart as Megaclusters, you don’t really need a pile of extra gimmicks. The engine does the heavy lifting. The balance is solid too, and it can hold your attention for long sessions while you hover around your starting bankroll. The base game can deliver nicely with wins up to 1,300x, but the top-end rewards are found in free spins, where you can potentially land up to 23,000 times your stake.
Players who are cautious about yet another brutally volatile slot, or a demanding collection-style setup, should like the different feel this one brings. All in all, Star Clusters isn’t flawless, but it’s difficult to criticise. The Aussie team have returned with another inventive release, putting a smart spin on the Megaways legacy. Whether Megaclusters takes off like its famous sibling is still unknown, but there’s a strong chance it will change how many people view cluster pays slots going forward.
