Sidewinder DoubleMax: Slot Overview
Although it’s nowhere near as widespread as something like Megaways right now, Yggdrasil Gaming’s DoubleMax mechanic is clearly gaining traction, having already driven a mix of strong and less impressive releases. A handful of partner studios have adopted the mechanic for their own titles, with Reflex Gaming arguably embracing it the most. Here, the studio once again combines its retro-leaning style with the newer twists DoubleMax introduces in the online slot Sidewinder DoubleMax.
Calling the visuals “old school” is probably the polite version of what Sidewinder DoubleMax looks like. Between the glowing lightning-bolt backdrop and bargain-basement effects, it doesn’t exactly shine in the graphics department. The audio doesn’t help much either, with music and sound effects that could have been pulled straight from an 80s or 90s arcade cabinet. Put simply, it’s classic Reflex Gaming: ideal for fans of the studio’s specific vibe, and a sensory assault for everyone else.

If Sidewinder DoubleMax seems like your kind of game, it’s worth noting that behind the scenes it uses a highly volatile math model and delivers an RTP of 95.5% at the default setting. Players can choose stakes from 20 c to $/€100 per spin, and there’s also both a bonus buy and a Golden Bet option available. Turning on the Golden Bet increases the bet by 25%, and in return the chances of triggering the Sidewinder feature are increased too. Gameplay takes place on a 5-reel, 3-row grid matrix, with 20 paylines used for forming winning combinations.
In Sidewinder DoubleMax, winning combinations are formed with 3 to 5 matching symbols, and there are 8 standard paying symbols. From lowest to highest, these are cherries, oranges, plums, grapes, green 7s, red 7s, yellow 7s, and a logo symbol. Payouts run from 1x the bet up to 10x the bet for a 5-of-a-kind. One key detail is that wins pay left to right starting from the leftmost reel and right to left starting from the rightmost reel. Five-of-a-kind combinations pay in both directions as well. Wilds pay the same as the logo when they form winning lines on their own, and they can substitute for all symbols – there are no scatters in this game. Both wilds and super wilds only enter the reels through the Sidewinder feature.
Sidewinder DoubleMax: Slot Features

The Sidewinder feature is the core bonus in Sidewinder DoubleMax, aside from the Golden Bet and the bonus buy. The Sidewinder feature triggers randomly on any losing spin. Once it activates, the reels literally shuffle like a five-card deck before being placed back onto the grid, and the multiplier trail is activated. If the reshuffled reels create a win, the multiplier trail progresses by 1 step (rising in value), and the reels shuffle again. This continues until a shuffle results in no win. At that point, the feature ends and the multiplier resets to x1.
Up to 6 wilds and/or super wild positions are randomly placed onto the multiplier trail at the beginning of the Sidewinder feature. When the trail reaches any of these positions, a wild or a super wild is added to a random position on the reels. A super wild is a stack of 3 wild symbols.
Bonus Buy
Using the bonus buy option in Sidewinder DoubleMax, players can activate the Sidewinder feature for 50 times their stake.

Sidewinder DoubleMax: Slot Verdict
Reflex Gaming keeps churning out releases that feel like they arrived about twenty years too late. Still, someone is clearly playing them, and fair enough. Otherwise, why would Yggdrasil Gaming partner with them, and why would Reflex Gaming remain so resistant to change? Sure, “modern” doesn’t automatically mean better, but “retro” doesn’t always equal effortlessly cool or stylish either. Reflex Gaming has firmly planted its banner in the retro sand, effectively telling everyone, “This is me,” and showing no interest in shifting.
At the very least, that stubbornness mainly applies to presentation, as each new title often feels like stepping into a different era the moment it hits the screen. Sidewinder DoubleMax definitely comes across as awkwardly dated. You either enjoy that look, dislike it, or simply don’t care, but it’s not particularly flattering, and it makes it a bit tougher to fully appreciate the stronger parts of what Sidewinder DoubleMax brings. The positives? It’s good to see the studio trying something different with the DoubleMax feature instead of serving up another Raptor DoubleMax-style repeat.
That said, Raptor DoubleMax set a high benchmark for DM gameplay, and Sidewinder DoubleMax doesn’t quite match the same rhythm, thrills, or overall fun. There are definitely flashes where the shuffles and luck line up, backed up by a 5,000x the bet max win. Even so, there are plenty of more engaging and entertaining alternatives out there, just a few clicks away, for anyone chasing that rising win-multiplier experience.
