Serengeti Kings (NetEnt): Overview
NetEnt return with a fresh slot set across the Serengeti plains. And “return” isn’t just a turn of phrase. After a run of fairly forgettable releases, they’ve delivered something that’s genuinely enjoyable to play and pleasing on the eye. The stills alone may not look especially groundbreaking, but the audio does a lot of the heavy lifting. The African wilderness has been mined endlessly in slots; the landscape is as crowded with forgotten titles as it is with animals. Any studio tackling this theme needs a bit of sparkle to rise above the pack. Does Serengeti Kings manage it?
Serengeti Kings goes for a playful, family-friendly vibe. It’s Africa through a Walt Disney lens—no nasty insects, no unsettling crawlies. Even the dangerous predators don’t feel threatening; they come across as mischievous and fun. The first hook is the attractive backdrop that sets the scene, but it’s the music that really grabs you and draws you in. It’s very Lion King-ish, with that soulful group-chorus feel that gives black churches their energy and warmth. If the Lion King had a chilled-out, slacker sibling who cared more about living well than ruling, Serengeti Kings would be it. It’s also worth pointing out that with the updated user interface and a few new gameplay ideas, Serengeti Kings feels quite different from older NetEnt slots.
Gameplay runs on a 5-reel, 4-row grid, with 26 paylines. Slightly unusual figures that, we’ll admit, felt a bit odd at first (we usually prefer 1024 win ways when a game uses 4 rows). Betting options are nicely varied, starting at 10 p/c per spin up to $/€100 at the top end. The symbol set is well balanced too. Lower payouts come from 9 – A royals styled with different animal-skin patterns. Premium symbols are Serengeti wildlife like meerkats, zebras, giraffes, hyenas, lions, and panthers. The last two—being the Kings of the Serengeti—pay best at 5 times the stake for five of a kind. Wild symbols are even stronger, paying 50 times the stake for five across a full payline, and they substitute for any regular pay symbol.
Volatility lands in the medium-to-high range and pairs well with a smart math model. In testing, we saw plenty of smaller wins strung together, broken up by the occasional larger, more rewarding hit. It’s not a monster for payouts, but the features can still generate respectable returns. The Feature Buy, covered below, offers three choices that shift the RTP from 96.2% – 96.7% depending on which one you select.
Serengeti Kings (NetEnt): Features

Lions and panthers rule the roost here, and these big cats sit at the heart of the feature set (black panthers are more commonly linked with the Americas, but we’ll let that slide). The game starts in Lion Spins mode, which takes place during daylight, and later shifts into Panther Spins, set at night. Each mode lasts 12 spins, and any lion or panther symbols that land are gathered into two counters positioned on either side of the reels.
On the 12th Lion Spin, lion symbols are no longer collected. Instead, the Lion feature activates and all stored Lion symbols are randomly dropped onto the reels. The same mechanic applies to Panther symbols on the 12th Panther Spin. This can form winning combinations and it also introduces an extra twist. If a Lion Symbol lands on a Panther or vice versa, they transform into a wild symbol. If matching animals land on top of each other, they add +1 to a multiplier. If a cat lands on top of a wild, that also adds +1 to the multiplier.
Each bet line has a multiplier beginning at x1. For any winning combination, the multipliers involved are added together and then applied to that win line. After the 12th spin finishes, the game swaps into the other cat’s mode and the cycle starts again.
The main attraction is the bonus round—landing 3 or more scatter symbols awards 12 Free Spins. The number of scatters you hit improves your odds of having Panther and Lion symbols ready for the final spin:
- 3 scatters – starts the bonus round with zero panthers or lions in the counter.
- 4 scatters – retains the number of panthers and lions that have already been collected up to that point.
- 5 scatters – adds 5 more to both lions and panther symbols already collected.
In free spins, lion and panther symbols are collected in the usual way. On the last 12th spin, both the collected Lion and Panther symbols are placed onto the reels to create combinations, wilds, and multipliers as described above.
For the first time, NetEnt has chosen to add a Feature Buy option that jumps straight into the free spins round. There are three Feature Buy choices—3 scatters cost 58.7 times the stake, while the price for 4 or 5 scatters changes depending on how many lion and panther symbols have already been collected. In our testing, the 5 scatter option was appearing at roughly 358 times the stake, which is extremely steep. It did return a profit each time, though—possibly just beginner’s luck.
Serengeti Kings (NetEnt): Verdict
Serengeti Kings is a strong entry overall. NetEnt shows once again that a handful of inventive mechanics can refresh a well-worn theme and make it feel worthwhile again. It’s also refreshing to see them bounce back after a couple of disappointing slots we encountered recently. The approach is clean and uncomplicated—solid visuals paired with a dependable math model and a set of engaging features.
The 12-spin structure, capped by a special Lion or Panther event, is a smart idea that steadily builds anticipation. It’s not completely new—IGT used a comparable concept in Scarab, for instance. Still, it suits Serengeti Kings nicely. Some games have that “one more spin” pull; this one creates a “12 more spins” pull. It’s hard to walk away halfway through a 12-spin run because something meaningful could be coming—especially if you’ve already banked a healthy number of lion or panther symbols. Seeing those stored symbols rain onto the reels at the end of a cycle can be genuinely tense and satisfying, even more so when both cats appear at the end of a free spins round.
Serengeti Kings may not quite stand shoulder to shoulder with the biggest names in the African wilderness category—the Raging Rhino titles and the like. Even so, it performs well enough. If you connect a few wild lines at the end of free spins, you can land around 300-400 times the stake, and more if you manage to pick up a multiplier or two. Not earth-shattering figures, but it does provide solid session length and plenty of interesting beats along the way.
Is the Feature Buy worth paying for? That’s a tricky call. It can absolutely swing in your favour, but 5 scatters can demand a hefty pile of coins. Even without using Feature Buy, Serengeti Kings is a thoughtfully designed and well-executed slot. All in all, there’s plenty to like here, and it’s definitely worth giving a few spins.
