Scroll of Seth: Slot Overview

If, like yours truly, you spotted the name Scroll of Seth alongside Play’n GO, you may have assumed yet another ‘book of’ slot was incoming. Despite the title, though, Scroll of Seth isn’t a standard, cookie-cutter ‘book of’ entry. Yes, it has expanding symbols across reels, but they’re never normal paying symbols, and the way they appear is tied to a special Wild Reel positioned above the grid, styled like an unfurled scroll. So it does bring a twist—however, we won’t give away too much of Scroll of Seth’s mechanics just yet, and will set the stage first.

When it comes to atmosphere, Scroll of Seth delivers. With countless Ancient Egypt games already in its catalogue, Play’n GO has clearly mastered the look and sound of this theme. It may feel like the studio could create these in its sleep at this point, but Scroll of Seth is still a polished, good-looking and good-sounding example. The palette pops, the character symbols stand out, and the music is as smooth and seductive as you’d want. It won’t score huge marks for originality, but the presentation is excellent—aside from one thing. The voiceover is questionable; it comes across like a boxing ring announcer or an MC trying to whip up a crowd at a strip club.

Next up are the nuts and bolts of Scroll of Seth, built around a highly volatile math model offered in five RTP versions. The default return is 96.31%, though depending on the market it can drop as low as 84.31%, so that’s definitely worth checking. Also worth noting is the bet selector along the bottom of the reels. Using the left and right buttons, players can choose stakes from 10 p/c to $/€100.

Set on a 5-reel, 3-row active grid (plus an upper Wild Reel), Scroll of Seth runs with 50 paylines to calculate wins. Card ranks 10 through A appear as the low-paying symbols, carved in an Egyptian stone style, while the premium symbols are five stone, jewel-like icons that resemble a fish, gryphon, crocodile-headed figure, a snake, and a monkey holding an eye. Apologies if any of those are off. Landing 5 matching symbols on a payline pays 0.3 to 0.5 times the bet for the royals or 0.6 to 1.6 times the bet for the premiums. Two types of wild symbols can show up in Scroll of Seth – the regular wild and the Enhanced wild, and both substitute for any standard pay symbol. Regular wilds appear in stacks on reels 2 and 4, although they can show on any reel, including being added by the Enhanced wilds, as explained below. Five regular wilds on a line pay 6x the bet, while five Enhanced wilds award 30x the bet.

Scroll of Seth: Slot Features

The feature engine in Scroll of Seth revolves around the Scroll scatter, which appears only on the third reel. When a Scroll scatter lands, it activates the Wild Reel—the horizontal reel that (when triggered) sits above the main reels. The Wild Reel has 2 tiers – one used in the base game and an additional tier that comes into play during free spins.

Wild Reel Tier 1

In the base game, once the Wild Reel is triggered, 1 to 3 enhanced wilds may land on it. During free spins, 2 to 5 enhanced wilds plus a Scroll scatter can appear. Any symbol positioned beneath a wild on the Wild Reel transforms into a wild, and Ankh scatters also turn into wilds.

Wild Reel Tier 2

This tier is triggered when a Scroll scatter lands on the Wild Reel during free spins. When that occurs, x2, x4, x11 multiplier wilds and Ankh scatters with +2, +4 extra spins can land. Only the highlighted symbols take effect. Multiplier wilds create the relevant wilds with multipliers, while Ankh scatters grant extra free spins and also add wilds without multipliers.

Free Spins

Hitting 3, 4, or 5 Ankh scatters awards 8, 11, or 15 free spins, respectively. In the free spins round, Ankh scatters only land on the second tier of the Wild Reel. Players can collect up to 50 free spins.

Scroll of Seth: Slot Verdict

So, despite the first impression, Scroll of Seth doesn’t really slot into the ‘book of’ category. That said, it isn’t especially groundbreaking either, as its core gameplay and feature set are carried over from an earlier Play’n GO release called Coywolf Cash. The two-tier Wild Reel, the third-reel trigger symbol, the multiplier wilds—those elements already existed in the forest setting of Coywolf Cash. Still, Scroll of Seth isn’t a simple reskin. Play’n GO has made a handful of changes, so it doesn’t play exactly the same. For example, Scroll of Seth is a touch less volatile, though likely not in a way most players will clearly notice. It’s rated 9 out of 10 for volatility, while Coywolf Cash received a full 10 out of 10. Scroll of Seth can also reach higher multiplier values on its wilds if you get that far, but it caps the number of free spins you can win, whereas Coywolf Cash didn’t.

For many players, the key figure is max potential. On that front, Scroll of Seth takes the win with 5,000x the bet. Overall, Scroll of Seth looks solid, produces respectable stats, and its features are, frankly, solid as well. What made it tougher to get excited about was the sense of going through familiar steps. That feeling was amplified by the fact that the previous Play’n GO slot we reviewed was the outright reskin Sweet Alchemy 100. Once you strip away Scroll of Seth’s shiny surface, what remains feels like a repeat of a game that didn’t impress us much the first time either.

So yes—another day, another Play’n GO makeover. It’s not a fully ‘pure’ reskin, as noted, but it stays very close to the original, with a few tweaks layered onto the new theme. Play’n GO has once again recreated Ancient Egypt effectively on the reels, and Scroll of Seth’s gameplay can shine in moments, but by the end of the review it was difficult to shake the thought: ‘meh, we’ve been here before.’
