Sands of Eternity: Slot Overview

Rising studio Slotmill has now checked the must-have Egyptian release off the list with a feature-packed title called Sands of Eternity. The name works, and even with the sheer volume of Egypt-themed slots already out there, this one still managed to spark some interest. Thankfully, what came next held up too. Slotmill may have gone with one of the most familiar settings possible, but they’ve filled Sands of Eternity with an assortment of mechanics that, while not entirely groundbreaking, feels a bit different in combination.

Slotmill is said to have been formed by a team of industry veterans (as usual), and it’s hard not to wonder whether some of that experience includes former Relax Gaming talent. The game carries a slightly Relax-like vibe—partly thanks to the visual polish, and partly because players work to break blocker tiles on the grid via Cluster Tumble (and other elements). Sands of Eternity suits anyone whose idea of Ancient Egypt is towering stone architecture lit by blazing braziers. The smaller details land nicely too, from symbol movement to the glowing hieroglyphics that show up during the bonus.

Anyone who enjoys plenty of wagering choices should appreciate the long list of options, which feels like it’s trying to rival ELK’s X-iter menu. Not everyone will necessarily be able to use every setting, so we’ll focus on the standard default mode, where bets run from 20 p/c to $/€40 per spin, with an RTP of 96.16%. The volatility is rated high, and Slotmill has matched that with a notably strong maximum win potential.

Hitting spin drops 18 active symbols onto a 6×6 sized game grid—3 symbols across each of the 6 reels. The other 18 spaces are initially filled with stone block tiles. At the outset, the game offers 729 ways to win, and whenever a winning way lands, it is removed through the Avalanche feature, which also clears adjacent stone block tiles. New active symbols then tumble into the empty spaces, and the cycle continues until no further wins appear. Across successive Avalanches, players can potentially remove every stone block from the grid, opening up up to 46,656 ways to win.

Looking closer at the active symbols, there are 9 standard pay icons: three animal designs, three geometric shapes, and three symbols resembling deities. A six-of-a-kind winning way pays 0.25x for the first group, 0.5x for the second group, and 1.5-3x the bet for the third group. Rounding things out are golden ‘W’ symbols, which act as wild and can replace any regular paying symbol.

Sands of Eternity: Slot Features

There are two main areas to cover here: the core in-game mechanics and the many different ways to approach the title. To start, special stone blocks appear in the four corners of the grid. When these blocks are destroyed, they trigger a respective feature:

  • Wild Scarab – once destroyed, it is replaced with a wild symbol.
  • Eye of Horus – once destroyed, all low pay symbols currently visible are removed before the next Avalanche.
  • Golden Scarab – places a 2×2 wild symbol in a random position before the next Avalanche.

Random Expansion

During any base game spin, the Random Expansion feature can activate. It removes all non-special stone block tiles, boosting the number of ways up to 20,736.

Free Spins

When a scatter symbol lands, it detonates, clearing adjacent stone blocks, and is collected on the bonus symbol collection meter. If 3, 4, 5, or 6 scatters are gathered across consecutive Avalanches, players receive 9, 12, 15, or 18 free spins, respectively. During free spins, 2-4 extra special stone block tiles are added to the grid on each spin. At this point, players can destroy ‘x1’ stone blocks that raise the win multiplier by +1, or ‘+1’ stone blocks that grant an extra free spin. The win multiplier carries over and does not reset between free spins.

Fast Track

Where offered, players can hit the Fast Track button and choose between three different ways to play Sands of Eternity:

  • Free spins can be purchased for 90x the bet and come with an RTP of 96.43%.
  • The Random Expansion feature is priced at 15x the bet and has an RTP of 96.3%
  • A guaranteed winning spin costs 5x the bet and has an RTP of 96.29%.

Burst Mode

By turning on Burst Mode, players select a number of game rounds and a bet level, then simply watch as the math model outputs results to the screen.

Sands of Eternity: Slot Verdict

Sands of Eternity offers plenty to discuss and is a genuinely engaging entry overall. The experience hits a solid level of enjoyment thanks to attractive visuals, atmospheric music, and smooth animation. The gameplay elements connect well, creating satisfying sequences as Avalanches smash blocks, expand ways, and deliver a decent stream of wins. With potential reaching 7,500x the bet, Sands of Eternity probably won’t be a title most players remember for the long haul—certainly not for eternity—but it does have the right components for an entertaining session.

What stood out most, though, was Burst Mode—something many players may never even encounter. There’s no judgment for anyone who prefers playing like this, but it does raise the question: would you actually want to? If you’re in a real hurry, or you genuinely enjoy watching a purple cloud while random numbers pop up, Burst Mode delivers exactly that. To be clear, once Burst Mode is enabled, the grid disappears, so there’s effectively no on-screen action—and if free spins trigger, you can skip through those without viewing them too. It felt like a very sterile, detached way to play, stripping the experience down to raw code and figures. To show how fast Burst Mode runs, we queued 1,000 spins and got through them in roughly 10 minutes. For reference, the total return was €879.05 from those 1,000 spins, with €122.90 coming from three bonus rounds. Just remember: the entire time, all we saw was a purple cloud spitting out numbers.

Outside of that, the rest of the game is far less divisive and remains easy to like. It does feel as though some of its appeal comes from familiar concepts that have appeared in other slots before. Even so, Sands of Eternity blends its ideas in a way that still feels fairly distinctive, and the overall production quality is strong enough to make it worth a look for anyone after an Egyptian slot that isn’t completely by-the-book.
