Royal Mint Megaways (Big Time Gaming): Overview

Get ready, because Big Time Gaming has come out of its midwinter lull with a fresh slot release. BTG doesn’t launch new titles all that often, so when they do, it tends to turn heads. The Aussie studio has a reputation for pushing slots in bold directions. Alongside creating one of the most popular game engines in circulation, they’re also known for dreaming up distinctive mechanics and feature ideas. So when a new BTG game lands, word travels fast across the community. Of course, that kind of status also brings serious expectations every time they publish. Not every slot can redefine the genre… or can it? Let’s load up Royal Mint and see what’s in store.

To start with, Megaways powers the gameplay here, along with Big Time Gaming’s Triple Reaction™ mechanic – this is only their second title to use it after it debuted in Opal Fruits. That means 6 reels with up to 7 symbols on the main grid, combining for up to 117,649 ways to win. Triple Reaction™ also adds two bonus 1×4 reels positioned above and below the main set. The theme draws from the British Royal Mint, the UK’s coin producer. Presentation-wise it’s impressive, featuring a view of the iconic Johnson Smirke Building built in 1811. The palette leans into stone greys with gold accents, while two cherry blossom trees sit either side of the reels to soften the look. And if the money theme wasn’t obvious enough, there’s a Monopoly-style soundtrack playing as you spin.

To get the reels turning, bets range from 20 p/c to $/€10, and the game runs smoothly on pretty much any device. Wins land when matching symbols connect on any row from left to right, with three or more required to pay. At the lower end you’ve got 9-A royals, supported by 4 higher-paying symbols – green, blue, red, and purple rectangular gems in the familiar BTG style. The rare purple is the standout since it only needs 2 to pay, and six of a kind returns 50 times the stake. As expected with Megaways, the Reaction mechanic boosts hit potential by clearing winning combos and dropping new symbols into the empty spaces. Reactions keep going until no further wins appear. Helping out is a glossy rainbow-style wild, but it only shows on the top and bottom bonus reels, and it substitutes for any symbol except the scatter.

Royal Mint isn’t a soft ride—its high volatility makes sure of that. It’s not especially stingy on paper though, with an RTP of 96.48%, which sits comfortably above average. The real challenge comes from how heavily the game leans into collecting scatters to unlock the prized enhanced free spins. Pull that off and you’ve got a shot at cracking the vault. Until then, and without multipliers like we saw in Lil’ Devil, the base game can feel sluggish. In truth, the main game largely serves as a waiting room for the features, even though there is still room for some respectable hits.

Enhanced Free Spins in action

Free spins and enhanced free spins are the core attractions. Hit at least four scatter symbols to spell M. I. N. T and you’ll trigger 12 Free Spins. If extra scatters are also visible, they award an additional 4+ spins. During this free spins round, there’s an unlimited multiplier starting at x1, increasing by 1 after every Reaction. Scatters can still appear while you’re in the feature, but only on the extra reels. Seeing three adds 4 more spins, and each additional scatter adds another 4 on top. So far, it’s all fairly familiar.

The real target is the game’s headline feature: the Heartstopper™ Enhanced Free Spins round. It delivers stronger potential, but the game makes you earn access. In the base game, whenever 3 scatters appear in view (the classic scatter tease), you receive 1 Gold Bar which is collected. Once you’ve built up 40 Gold Bars, an extra scatter is locked beside the reels until the next free spin round is triggered. When that happens, regular free spins are replaced by Enhanced Free Spins. Here, the multiplier begins at x2 and increases by 2+ after each Reaction. After the feature ends, the meter resets and the collection process begins again.

Royal Mint Megaways (Big Time Gaming): Verdict

Royal Mint Megaways is undeniably a strong slot, but it also leaves some players conflicted—mainly because of the collection/grinding approach, which has clearly split opinion. On top of that, it can feel a bit conventional: essentially a Megaways setup with a couple of free spin modes layered over it. The end product is an easy-to-follow game that doesn’t really push the limits. Is that a small crack in the armour? Does it suggest Big Time Gaming isn’t quite as inventive as the reputation that made them a top-tier studio—or have competitors simply closed the gap?

Another potential drawback is just how hard it can be to reach the bonus features. The base game doesn’t offer much action, so Royal Mint leans heavily on its free spins—arguably making it even more volatile than Lil Devil. In testing, it took a huge investment of time and credits to see what the game could do. For instance, it took us 2 hours and 30 minutes to trigger the first bonus, and it didn’t arrive in the standard way—it only happened after collecting all 40 gold bars. Even worse, it paid only about 60x, so expect a rough session if you commit to it. Later bonuses tended to arrive much more often, thankfully, so that experience wasn’t typical. Still, anyone who disliked collection mechanics like those in Kingmaker probably won’t be thrilled to see them here. That said, the system fits Royal Mint better than it does in some other games, so it’s not necessarily a deal-breaker.

All that said, when Royal Mint Megaways really gets going in Enhanced Free Spins, the +2 multiplier steps are a great addition. Slots can be unpredictable, and this bonus round can produce serious payouts. At its peak, it feels like a full-on raid of the Royal Mint, with maximum potential around 40,000 times the stake.

So yes, Royal Mint is a quality slot—but does it reach “great” status? That will depend on how strongly it connects with players over time. It’s not BTG’s most daring or innovative release, proving that not every launch can be cutting-edge. Maybe the criticism is a touch harsh, but BTG’s own history sets the bar high. Their consistent quality invites heavier scrutiny, and it’s easy to feel slightly let down when a new title isn’t a total game changer. Even with those caveats, Royal Mint Megaways remains a solid slot that can absolutely keep players entertained with what it brings to the table.
