Rotten: Slot Overview
Among all the so-called black swan scenarios, the zombie apocalypse is arguably one of the few humanity might be relatively ready for. For starters, there’s no shortage of weapons out there that could be grabbed and used against mindless, brain-seeking husks. And thanks to the flood of films, books, and TV series on the topic, most people have at least a rough sense of what strategies could work—and which ones probably won’t. Put together, our odds of making it through a zombie outbreak seem a lot better than surviving something like a world-ending meteor impact.
That said, it would still be terrifying, and the shambling masses in Rotten by Hacksaw Gaming make that clear. Rotten is an online slot built around a zombie apocalypse, set in places you’d least want to meet the undead. The base game unfolds in a creepy fairground; one bonus round shifts to a decaying forest, while the other takes place outside a haunted house. Across the board, the visuals are relentlessly grim, dirty, and threatening—almost like a zombie-twisted take on Wanted Dead or a Wild. Hacksaw Gaming can swing wildly in tone too: on one side you’ve got titles like Pug Life, and on the other end sits Rotten, showing the studio’s Jekyll-and-Hyde range is still going strong—fittingly ironic given the theme.

Rotten also leans into another familiar Hacksaw trait: a highly volatile math model, plus multiple RTP configurations. The top return is 96.27% when playing normally at 10 p/c to $/€100 per spin, although that figure shifts if you enable any of the four feature buy options. The undead chaos plays out on a 6-reel, 5-row grid that offers 35 paylines to score wins on. Winning combinations require three to six matching symbols from left to right, starting on the first reel, and the game has a hit frequency of 33.56% at the highest RTP setting.
Card ranks from 10 through ace make up Rotten’s lower-value symbols, while the higher-paying icons are five characters who don’t exactly look welcoming. A six-of-a-kind low symbol pays 2.5 to 7.5 times the stake, whereas landing six premium symbols returns 15-40x the bet. The wild symbol is a reaching hand and can appear on all six reels. Wilds replace all paying symbols and deliver 50x the bet for a six-of-a-kind wild combination.
Rotten: Slot Features

On the feature side, Rotten brings in a mechanic called SwitchSpins, which can trigger in the base game as well as in both of its free spins bonuses. On top of that, some players can access four options via the feature buy menu.
Switchspins
Hitting the Switch symbol kicks off this feature and grants 1 to 10 respins. During these respins, symbols are selected and replaced with either the highest-paying Pennywise-style character or wilds. If a new Switch symbol lands on a respin, it adds more symbols to the replacement pool and also awards additional respins. The chosen symbols and the replacement symbol are clearly indicated above the reels. Once the current SwitchSpins sequence finishes, the selected symbols are reset. If free spins are triggered while SwitchSpins are running, the active set ends first, and then the free spins begin.
Mad Scientist
Landing 3 Mad Scientist symbols in the base game awards 10 free spins in the Mad Scientist bonus. While this feature is active, there is a greater chance of landing Switch symbols compared to the base game.
Total Takeover
Landing 3 Total Takeover symbols in the base game or in Mad Scientist awards 10 Total Takeover free spins. If triggered during Mad Scientist, they start after those spins have ended. In this mode, there’s a greater chance of landing Switch symbols, and selected symbols are saved progressively so they do not reset after SwitchSpins. This means you can potentially collect all of the symbols, covering the entire screen with the top-paying symbol or wilds. Landing 3 Total Takeover symbols in the feature awards +4 free spins.
Buy Bonus
If the Buy Bonus button is available, selecting it allows players to choose from these feature buy options:
- Bounshunt FeatureSpins – 3x the bet where each spin is 5 times more likely to trigger a bonus game. Volatility is very high, and max RTP is 96.26%.
- Switch FeatureSpins – 20x the bet to guarantee each spin lands a Switch symbol. Extremely volatile with a max RTP of 96.16%.
- Mad Scientist – buy this round for 110x the bet. Highly volatile with a max RTP of 96.26%.
- Total Takeover – buy this feature for 250x the bet. Very highly volatile with a max RTP of 96.26%.

Rotten: Slot Verdict
As soon as Rotten started up, it immediately felt oppressive, and it was clear this wasn’t going to be played for laughs. The hazy, atmospheric intro screen—like a William Turner-style painting reimagined for the end times—sets expectations for what follows. And what follows is anything but cheerful. If Canny the Can wandered into this nightmare, he wouldn’t survive two seconds among the undead. The cast here has zero interest in being friendly, and that coldness sometimes defines Rotten as a whole. Hacksaw Gaming is known for producing fiercely volatile online slots, and Rotten often feels like it belongs firmly in that category.
That impression carries through nearly every part of the experience too, from the base game to FeatureSpins and into the free spins rounds. The only time it felt like the game eased off was during Total Takeover, which was easily where the most enjoyment came from. There’s a huge gap between Total Takeover and Mad Scientist. Fundamentally they’re similar, but the ability to build up saved symbols for replacement when SwitchSpins hit changes everything. It can be massively entertaining at points, and it’s also where the biggest wins during the review showed up. Of course, outcomes will differ—these are simply observations. Total Takeover is still volatile, swinging from exciting sequences where lots of symbols convert and multiple retriggers stack up, to harsher stretches that punish just as hard. It’s not that big moments can’t happen elsewhere in Rotten, but Total Takeover felt like the most plausible place for the game’s 10,000x the bet max win to land. It would be interesting to know how often that round triggers naturally.
Sometimes, Rotten can genuinely feel like a fight to stay alive—much like sprinting from relentless, animated flesh bags intent on wiping out humanity. Still, there are prizes to be found, and unlocking them can be as satisfying as in any Hacksaw Gaming slot—maybe even more so here, because it comes with the feeling of not only enduring the assault, but actually coming out on top.
