Rogue Rats of Nitropolis: Slot Overview

Round 2 is here in Swedish software provider ELK Studios’ Battle of Nitropolis series, and this time the spotlight falls on the sharp-toothed troublemakers. The game is Rogue Rats of Nitropolis, and the plan behind the project is simple: ELK Studios is launching four slots centred on the 4 clans – Gritty Kitties, Rogue Rats, Dirty Dawgs, and Pug Thugs – before wrapping up the dystopian saga with Nitropolis 5. In the lore, after Sergeant Nitro Wild booted the clans out of Nitropolis, they’ve been sharpening their talents back on home ground, preparing for one massive final clash.

The rats’ “home” is a desert wasteland, far removed from Nitropolis’ sprawling, built-up urban nightmare. You’ll be spending plenty of time out there too, because Rogue Rats of Nitropolis doesn’t use the usual reels/rows/ways setup. Instead, the rat tears around an endlessly large grid, picking up pay symbols and coins, blasting objects, and stocking up on Nitro Fuel. Surprising? Same here. This is a Nitropolis title without Nito Reels or the thousands (or even millions) of ways to win that have defined the series so far. Even so, Rogue Rats of Nitropolis isn’t some weird side experiment—it’s a fresh, and arguably equally rewarding, way to explore Nitropolis, now from the rats’ perspective.

So what’s the setup? The rat moves around the map in 1 of 4 different coloured vehicles and collects only pay symbols of the same colour as the vehicle. That said, the rat may change vehicles during a game round, changing the colour of the symbols it can collect. At the start, the rat has an inner 5×5 grid in view, and while players can see more than that, the rat’s own vision can expand. Whatever falls inside the rat’s visible area is what influences the direction it drives.

The four pay symbol types can be upgraded, and at the lowest tier each pays 0.05 to 0.2 times the bet, increasing to 1 to 5 times the bet each at the top tier. Symbols are collected when they sit horizontally or vertically next to the rat, and a cluster of the 4 coloured payout symbols may make it change direction. Clusters of symbols differently coloured to the current vehicle can also cause a direction change. Alongside pay symbols, the rat can collect coins displaying multipliers of the bet.

Each round begins with a random vehicle and a certain amount of fuel. Every move uses fuel, but picking up payout symbols and shooting at or collecting feature symbols grants extra fuel. Filling the fuel meter triggers a temporary boost where fuel becomes limitless until the next coin collection – this is the Nitro Fuel Boost. Once the fuel runs out, and nothing can be collected, or no bonus is waiting, the game round ends. On the stats side, Rogue Rats of Nitropolis is highly volatile and carries ELK’s familiar gloomy RTP of 94% whether the X-iter is used or not. The stake range is 20 c to $/€100 per game round.

As the rat speeds across the wasteland, it can also take advantage of various feature symbols, a multiplier, bonus rounds, and the X-iter bonus buys if you want to try and fast-track the action.

Nitro Multiplier

When enabled, the Nitro Multiplier is applied to coin wins and payout symbols when collected. Hitting the NPD Radar symbol triggers the locked multiplier or upgrades the active multiplier to the higher locked value currently shown beside it.

Feature Symbols

Additional feature symbols in Rogue Rats of Nitropolis are:

  • Nitro Blob – shooting one of these upgrades visible pay symbols to a higher payout level.
  • New Vehicle – the rat can hop out of the current vehicle and into one of a different colour.
  • Nitro Fuel – grabbing a Nitro Well or raiding a Fuel Depot refills the fuel tank.
  • Coins – coins are collected by destroying NPD Cruises and NPD Helicopters. Also, be on the lookout for the Police HQ and the Max Win coin.
  • Missile Silo – shooting the silo increases the rat’s visible area.
  • Turret – drive onto a Turret to reach features further away.

Bonus Game

Pick up 2 scatter symbols during your run and you’ll receive 3 free spins. If one of the collected bonus symbols is a super bonus symbol, then 3 free spins are awarded where each spin starts with a Nitro Fuel Boost. The bonus game and super bonus game can both be retriggered, and you can also upgrade from the standard bonus to the super version. The pay symbol payout level and the currently active multiplier are carried over from the base game and remain in place throughout the feature.

X-iter

From the X-iter menu, you can choose:

  • Bonus Hunt – game rounds cost 3x the bet and start with 1 bonus scatter symbol already collected. Bonus games are 4 times as likely to trigger.
  • Nitro Rally – 10x the bet for 1 spin with extended visibility and double the amount of starting fuel.
  • Road Warrior – 25x the bet for 1 spin with double the amount of starting fuel, pay symbols are removed, and coins are more frequent.
  • Bonus – 100x the bet to buy the regular batch of free spins.
  • Super Bonus – 500x the bet to buy the super bonus.

Rogue Rats of Nitropolis: Slot Verdict

After looking at Gritty Kitty, it felt reasonable to assume the four games leading into Nitropolis 5 would follow a similar template. Something like: add Nitro Reels to a grid, crank up the ways to win, sprinkle in a few smart twists, and you’ve got another solid Nitropolis entry. ELK Studios shattered that expectation almost instantly once Rogue Rats of Nitropolis got going. It plays in a completely different way. There are slight echoes of the Pirots slots and a touch of Jeff & Scully, and you might even think of Push Gaming’s Mad Cars, but Rogue Rats of Nitropolis is very much its own creature—pushing the Nitropolis lineup into new territory without coming across as a bargain-bin imitation.

The key detail to understand is that the rat only collects symbols that match the colour of the vehicle it’s currently driving. Miss that, and it’s easy to get annoyed watching the little menace cruise past loads of pay symbols that look collectible. Once it clicks, the movement and choices make far more sense, and you can simply enjoy the destruction—ripping around, blowing things up, topping up fuel, scooping pay symbols, plus the occasional coin along the way. When everything chains together smoothly, Rogue Rats of Nitropolis is seriously enjoyable. It can hit a similar vibe to Pirots 2 when long sequences kick off, even if it doesn’t always reach the same complexity. Still, with the rat tearing about causing chaos, collecting cash in a dystopian setting, and a soundtrack that feels like a Northlane/Skrillex wub-wub collision, Rogue Rats is genuinely high-energy.

Credit where it’s due: ELK really went left-field here, and it works. Of course, this style won’t suit everyone—there are no rows, reels, ways, or anything resembling a traditional layout, so Rogue Rats doesn’t behave like a standard slot at all. It can still annoy or delight like one, though (up to 25,000x the bet), without question. Actually, more than that: it feels like a carefully built, hugely entertaining release—the kind you expect from a fearless innovator of ELK Studio’s calibre.
