Rockabilly Wolves (Just For The Win): Review

Perhaps more than any other Microgaming partner, Swedish developer JFTW has had a hard time putting out anything that truly stands out. Most of their releases to date have been average at best, and by now the whole project is starting to feel a bit unnecessary. Still, with expectations firmly in check, we decided to try Rockabilly Wolves—and it didn’t take long before we hit our first face-palm moment.

Even with the loud rockabilly soundtrack pumping away, it was the geometric-looking reels that first grabbed our attention. We were anticipating something like a 3-4-4-4-3 reel setup, or maybe those colourful stacked symbols going wild on the middle reels, so it was a mild let-down to find it’s actually a standard 5-reel, 3-row, 20-payline slot. Rockabilly Wolves is a high variance slot that includes a Re-Spin feature in the base game, plus Sticky Wilds and multipliers up to 6x during the Free Spins round. It’s available on all devices with stakes ranging from 0.10€ to 50€ per spin.

In terms of presentation, it’s bright and easy to follow, although the childish cartoon-like art style feels a little too much for our taste. Given how some of the “wolves” look remarkably close to Disney characters, it would be interesting to know what they’d make of it. That said, visuals are clearly where this studio is most comfortable—while it’s nowhere near the best-looking slot we’ve played, it’s certainly not among the worst either.

With a strong 50s vibe, the reels feature A, K, Q and J royals, along with 3 fully stacked premium symbols shown as cherries, 8-balls and the Rockabilly Wolves logo. The logo is the top payer, awarding 20 times your stake for 5 across a full payline. There’s also a fully stacked wild symbol, and it pays the same as the logo.

The scatter symbol is the one you’ll want to keep an eye on. It can only land on the three middle reels, and seeing 2 of them at once will activate the Re-Spin feature. Those 2 scatters stay locked while the reels spin again, giving you another shot at landing the 3rd scatter needed to trigger the bonus, as well as a chance to form a fresh winning line.

Hitting 3 scatters awards 9 Free Spins, with the scatter on reel 3 from the triggering spin transforming into a Multiplier Sticky Wild that remains locked for the entire free spins round and begins at 2x. From there, any sticky wilds or multiplier sticky wilds (these are two different wilds) that land will also lock in place and stay put. On top of that, every extra multiplier sticky wild that appears increases the multiplier by 1, up to a maximum of 6x. The feature can also be retriggered once—when at least one wild has landed on each reel, 3 extra free spins are added to your total.

While not officially confirmed, a top win of 2400 times your stake on a single spin should be possible in the very rare scenario where you land a full screen of sticky wilds.

Rockabilly Wolves (Just For The Win): Verdict

Sticky wilds can be a genuinely entertaining mechanic when used well, and it’s appeared in classic titles like Dead or Alive, Cazino Zeppelin, and more recently, The Dog House by Pragmatic Play. It’s put to decent use here too, even if it doesn’t deliver quite the impact we were expecting.

Sadly, the base game feels weak and we found ourselves getting bored quickly—there’s very little excitement or upside, and the free spins seemed to take forever to arrive. The respin feature did add some early interest, but after around 9 teases without landing the 3rd scatter, it became more irritating than fun.

Rockabilly Wolves is a small improvement for JFTW, although that’s not saying much considering how poor the last few releases have been. This isn’t a game we’d spend our hard-earned money on. It simply doesn’t measure up in a market packed with thousands of titles competing for your attention. Sorry, Just For The Win—this one is Just For The Bin.
