Roadkill: Slot Overview

Scientific American reports that European roadkill surveys indicate around 29 million mammals and 194 million birds are killed on Europe’s roads each year. In the US, estimates put the annual number of vertebrates killed by traffic at roughly 350 million. That’s an astonishing tally of flattened wildlife. Even so, those figures pale next to the estimated 228 trillion insects lost on roads worldwide. If reincarnation is a thing (not saying it isn’t), picture those countless souls cycling through lives—tiny bodies acting as their vehicles in this 3D world—still roaming about if humans and our steel machines hadn’t crushed them.

Smashing critters is central to Roadkill, an online slot from software provider Nolimit City. Luckily for animal lovers, the creatures here aren’t truly harmed and can even end up doing something useful after being hit by a vehicle. Nolimit City’s previous car-themed release, Road Rage, didn’t land as well as many of their games usually do, so it was hard not to feel a bit uneasy when Roadkill booted up—especially once we were greeted by the, er, velvety voice of one of its human residents. Visually, Roadkill also echoes Road Rage. The 5×3, 99 payline layout sits right in the middle of the roadway, and the whole thing leans into a cartoony vibe. As ever, plenty of effort has gone into the audio too, delivering a big-top circus meets funk-rock feel—somewhat reminiscent of alt-rock oddballs Primus and frontman Les Claypool, just with less slap bass…’Oh, welcome to this world of fools, of pink champagne and swimming pools.’

Roadkill is a highly volatile slot, though its 8 out of 10 rating keeps it from being stamped with the ‘Extreme’ tag that some of its relatives carry. The default RTP sits close to the industry norm at 96.04%, with lower settings available depending on market or configuration. Players can choose stakes from 20 c to $/€100 per spin, and there are also three bonus buy options for anyone who wants to skip ahead. If you’re not purchasing features, free spins have a theoretical frequency of 1 in 239.

Wins are formed when matching symbols land left to right starting from reel 1, with connections allowed horizontally or diagonally. A grimy bag of something, acorns, a trap, a picture, and a barrel of moonshine make up the low-paying symbols, while the higher-paying cast includes G. Coonie, Love Nut, El Zorro, Hilly, and Billy. Landing a 5 OAK combination pays 0.5-1.5x the bet for low symbols and 1.5-7.5x the bet for high symbols. When wilds appear, they substitute for all standard pay symbols.

Roadkill: Slot Features

Roadkill slot
Roadkill slot – Team Assemble

Roadkill is one of those NLC releases that’s tricky to capture purely in text, and it really takes some hands-on play to grasp all the moving parts. The feature set is extensive, including Call to Arms, Collectors, Papa Bear, Deer Joe, Fred the Rabbit, Hilly and Billy Cars, Team Assemble, Junkyard Assault, Roadblock, plus Nolimit Bonuses.

Call to Arms

Landing 2 scatter symbols activates Call To Arms, awarding 2 normal hearts and 2 Jumping Wilds. If a third scatter appears during this mode, Team Assemble free spins are triggered, and any normal hearts that were lost are replenished. The mode finishes once there are no hearts remaining.

Collectors

Collectors switch on when Jumping Wild animals are in play. Each Collector is associated with a specific Jumping Wild. Any time a car zooms across the grid and is stopped by a Jumping Wild, the Collector value increases by +1. If the Collector reaches 5 (its cap), it triggers the upgrade feature, improving its linked Jumping Wild type. When the upgrade feature activates, a normal heart turns into an armoured heart, or if hearts are missing, an armoured heart is added instead. Once the cap is hit, the Collector counter is cleared.

Papa Bear

Papa Bear is a Jumping Wild that moves to random positions in the Battle Area between rounds (reel 2-4). Papa Bear functions by turning on a general multiplier while active, and it attempts to move 1 step every second spin in any direction. It can only stop a car once, inflicting 2 hit points from left to right. Each time a car is blocked, the general multiplier is increased by x1 up to x5, and its Collector increases too by +1. When the Collector reaches 5, a permanent x2 multiplier is applied to the Jumping Wild until the bet ends.

Deer Joe

Deer Joe is a Jumping Wild that moves to random positions in the Battle Area between rounds (reel 2-4). Deer Joe operates as a Split Wild, which is activated when it blocks a car. It attempts to move 1 step each spin in any direction. It can stop a car once, dealing 1 hit point from left to right, and when a car is blocked it splits all symbols on the same row and in the direction the car is coming from. If its Collector reaches 5, the split feature slices all rows instead of one.

Fred the Rabbit

Fred the Rabbit is a Jumping Wild that moves to random positions in the Battle Area between rounds (reel 2-4). Fred the Rabbit acts as a Trapper, able to move anywhere within the Battle Area on every spin. It can block a car multiple times, dealing 1 hit point of damage from left to right. Whenever a car is stopped, it leaves behind a wild at its current position and then jumps to a new empty spot. If its Collector reaches 5, on its first jump it applies a Trap once on its starting position. The Trap can stop and damage a car once and becomes a wild if it successfully stops the car. If the Trap doesn’t stop or hit a car, it is removed before the spin ends.

Hilly and Billy Cars

This feature becomes active when animals are in play, triggering between spins. Two car types are involved. Hilly’s green car has 1 hit point and appears first each round, stopping after a single hit. The second is Billy’s red car, which has 2 hit points and shows up every fifth round during Team Assemble or every round in Junkyard Assault. It requires 2 hits to be stopped. When a car enters, it drives across the reels from the right on a random row. If a Jumping Wild blocks it, 1 hit point is removed. Once hit points reach 0, the car is stopped. If the car makes it across without being stopped, it selects a random row and returns from the left. Completing a full back-and-forth either damages an armoured heart or removes a normal heart. The feature ends when there are no hearts left in play.

Team Assemble

Landing 3 scatters in the base game, or hitting a third scatter during Call to Arms, triggers this feature. When it starts, three hearts are applied or restored. The red car is enabled and arrives alongside the green car on every fifth spin. If all 3 Jumping Wilds are upgraded, the round upgrades to Junkyard Assault. The round ends once no hearts remain.

Junkyard Assault

This is triggered when all 3 Jumping Wilds have been upgraded. On activation, three hearts are applied or restored. The red car and the green car come into play on every spin. In addition, the separate Collectors are replaced by 1 Total Collector starting at 0, which triggers Roadblock whenever it reaches its cap. The round ends when there are no hearts left.

Roadblock

After 20 hits are collected, this feature activates on the following spin. Roadblock restores any normal hearts and transforms Jumping Wilds to cover a whole row each on the Battle Area. Hilly and Billy cars then come into play, each striking one random row and triggering a row-based effect. The top row adds a wild to reel 5; the middle splits all rows on reel 5; and the bottom multiplies the 3×3 wild by 2. The sequence never changes, and each row can be hit twice. Once both cars have been stopped, all 3 rows convert to a 3×3 wild covering the Battle Area. After the payout, the 3×3 wild changes back into Jumping Wilds and the Total Collector resets to 0.

Nolimit Bonus

The Nolimit Bonus lets players purchase Team Assemble for 60x the bet (RTP 96.15%), Junkyard Assault for 500x the bet (96.21%), or choose the lucky dip option for 200x the bet (RTP 96.19%).

Roadkill: Slot Verdict

Honestly, reading and writing out that feature list felt like wading through War & Peace—it just kept going. Still, we made it, and now it’s time to look back. For one thing, from Road Rage to Roadkill, what’s with Nolimit City and all the road-based chaos? Do they hate driving, or just can’t stand anyone—or anything—getting in the way? More likely, the studio is simply having a laugh with it.

Roadkill is soaked in silliness, with standout moments you can point to—like the Trap baited with a MAGA hat, which is pretty cheeky. Often, humour or an anti-establishment streak is just a mask for a brutally unforgiving Nolimit City experience, but Roadkill didn’t feel like something that had been run over on the highway… twice.

That said, bonus buys can underwhelm, and the base game is capable of dragging through rough stretches. Dead spins certainly aren’t rare either. Triggering Call to Arms can lift things, though, and it’s often where Roadkill starts to find momentum—assuming the bonus plays out well. The idea of cars colliding with animal Jumping Wilds is either weird or inventive, depending on your perspective, and it’s a neat way to keep a feature going without relying on a fixed number of spins.

Reaching the best parts of Roadblock takes some persistence, but they’re there, and the game improved the longer the session went on. Any early caution brought on by memories of Road Rage quickly got ground into the dirt, replaced by the buzz of bonus features that can be genuinely entertaining. It can be tense too, especially when you’re agonisingly close to upgrading all Jumping Wilds. If you do go the distance, Roadkill’s 11,091x the bet max win isn’t Nolimit City’s biggest headline payout, but it arguably helps keep things feeling more balanced, since Roadkill didn’t come across as one of the studio’s outright face rippers.

As Les Claypool also put it, ‘To defy the laws of tradition is a crusade only of the brave.’ Whether you’re a current, former, or future Nolimit City fan, Roadkill is more proof of a studio steering its own path—using themes nobody else is touching and wrapping them in gameplay that can absolutely punish, but can also deliver a real rush when fortune swings your way.
