Razor Ways: Slot Overview

The Razor franchise has been a major hit for developer Push Gaming, kicking off with 2019’s deep-sea beast Razor Shark and resurfacing in an even bigger way with Razor Returns in 2023. Now the studio dives back underwater again, but with a noticeable refresh to the formula. The third entry is Razor Ways, and alongside moving from paylines to ways, it also makes a bold call by removing the Nudge and Reveal feature that helped define the earlier games. Fans don’t need to panic, though—Razor Ways is packed with features, updated mechanics, and plenty of seafloor surprises to uncover.

Razor Ways keeps ties to its predecessors by bringing back the familiar shark faces on the symbols, while the reel matrix is surrounded by a creaky-looking metal frame that helps sell the deep-ocean vibe. It has a cosy cartoon style (as cosy as shark-infested waters can be), yet it also feels cleaner and more contemporary than before. The visuals are crisp and well-defined, and the soundtrack delivers a dark, underwater mood with a hint of James Bond flair, making Razor Ways instantly appealing on first impression.

Razor Ways slot – base game

As the title suggests, Razor Ways uses a ways-to-win system rather than the bet line format found in the previous two instalments. At the beginning of the base game, there are 729 ways active across the 3 unlocked rows, and this can climb up to 46,656 once all 6 rows are opened. The playfield is built from 6 reels. Razor Ways also tones volatility down slightly to sit at medium-high volatile, and its top RTP when staking a flat 10 c to $/€100 per spin is 96.36%.

Razor Ways’ four low-paying symbols are blue, green, purple, and orange sea plants, paying 0.5x the bet for 6 OAK. Above those are a compass, flippers, a diving helmet, and 4 sharks as the premium symbols. Landing 6 OAK ways with these pays 1 to 5 times the bet. Wilds replace all standard paying symbols, shown as the shark with golden teeth.

Razor Ways: Slot Features

There’s a lot going on in Razor Ways, so it makes sense to begin with the cascading wins system. Whenever matching symbols create a win, they vanish from the grid after the payout. The remaining symbols then drop down, with new ones falling in to fill any spaces. Cascades continue for as long as fresh wins keep forming.

Expanding Rows

Initially, the 3 bottom rows are available, while the top 3 rows are locked. Each time a cascade win or Instant Prize win happens, the grid expands by +1 row. It’s possible to unlock all three, but whenever a new round begins, the top three rows lock again.

Mystery Symbols

Mystery symbols can appear anywhere during the base game or free spins. When they land, Mystery symbols reveal: Pay symbols, Wild symbols, Expanding Wild symbols, Converter into Wild symbols, or Golden Shark symbols.

Expanding Wild

Expanding Wilds may land naturally or be revealed via Mystery symbols. Every position covered by an Expanding Wild becomes a wild. In the base game, Expanding Wild symbols expand to cover the unlocked rows. If the reel holding the Expanding Wild also contains a scatter or Golden Shark, those symbols cascade down once combinations have been made. When an Expanding Wild lands in free spins, it unlocks rows and expands to cover the whole reel. Expanding wilds can carry a multiplier of x2-x5, and if it doesn’t contribute to a win, it reverts to its original form.

Converter into Wild Symbol

Converter into Wild symbols can appear directly or be revealed by Mystery symbols. Once on the reels, it cycles through paying symbols on the unlocked rows. When a symbol is selected, every instance of that symbol is turned into wilds, and the Convertor into Wild symbol also becomes a wild. When Mystery symbols land, up to 2 may reveal Convertor into Wild symbols; any remaining Mystery symbols reveal the same pay symbol.

Razor Reveal Feature

If Mystery symbols land on at least 3 consecutive reels in either the base game or bonus game, they transform into Golden Shark symbols, activating the Razor Reveal feature. Mystery symbols may randomly trigger this even without landing on consecutive reels. Each Golden Shark position then spins to reveal:

  • Instant Prize symbol – bet multipliers of 1x to 5,000x the bet.
  • Multiplier symbol – multiples Instant Prize and Collector symbols on the reels by x2 to x10, then gets removed. The empty positions spin through the prizes.
  • Collector symbol – collects the values of all Instant Prize and Collector symbols. All Instant Prize symbols are removed when collected. The empty positions spin through the prizes. Collectors stay on the reels for the duration of Razor Reveals.
  • Converter symbol – spins through regular pay symbols on unlocked reels. When one lands, all instances of the symbols convert to Golden Shark symbols, including the Convertor symbol. The Razor Reveal feature will continue.
  • Scatter symbol (in the base game).
  • Row Unlocker symbol (only in the bonus buy) – unlocks a row, then is removed. The empty position spins through the prizes.

Free Spins

Hitting 3 or more scatter symbols in the base game or while the Razor Reveal feature is running awards free spins.

  • 3 scatters – triggers 6 free spins on an initial 3×6 grid with an initial x1 multiplier.
  • 4 scatters – triggers 8 free spins on an initial 4×6 grid with an initial x3 multiplier.
  • 5 scatters – triggers 10 free spins on an initial 5×6 grid with an initial x5 multiplier.
  • 6 scatters – triggers 10 free spins on an initial 6×6 grid with an initial x10 multiplier.

In free spins, Glowing Mystery symbols can land. They behave the same as Mystery symbols, but each Glowing Mystery symbol that appears adds to the Total Multiplier Level meter. You need 5 symbols to advance to the next level. Moving up levels boosts the total multiplier (x1-x3-x5-x10) and expands the gaming grid (3×6-4×6-5×6-6×6). Reaching level 2 awards +4 free spins, level 3 gives +3 free spins, and level 4 grants +2 free spins.

Bonus Buy

In the bonus buy menu, the following options can be purchased:

  • A guaranteed Converter into Wild symbol for 67x the bet.
  • A Razor Reveal feature with 6 positions guaranteed filled with Golden Shark symbols for 50x the bet.
  • A Grand Razor Reveal with 18 guaranteed positions filled with Golden Shark symbols and the possibility of unlocking an additional row with a Row Unlocker symbol for 150x the bet.
  • 1x multiplier with 6 free spins for 73x the bet.
  • 3x multiplier with 8 free spins for 81.5x the bet.
  • 5x multiplier with 10 free spins for 164x the bet.
  • 10x multiplier with 10 free spins for 466x the bet.
  • Random multiplier with corresponding free spins for 150x the bet.

Push Bet

Finally, there are Push Bet options. Turning on the Scatter Push Bet raises the chance of landing scatters, with the stake increased to 1.4x. The Mystery Push Bet boosts the bet to 3x, guaranteeing 2 Mystery symbols on unlocked rows every spin. The Mystery and Scatter Push Bet increases the bet to 4x, guaranteeing 2 Mystery symbols on unlocked rows while also improving the odds of landing scatters.

Razor Ways: Slot Verdict

In the Jaws movies, each sequel seemed to demand a larger shark. With the Razor line, Push Gaming proves that going bigger isn’t the only way forward. Sure, Razor Returns outmuscled the original with extra heft, but Razor Ways dials certain elements back, almost like this shark has slimmed down. Even so, Razor Ways is still loaded with features. The feature list here is hefty, with plenty to unpack. Between the in-game mechanics, Push Bets, and feature buys, Razor Ways offers a well-equipped slot overflowing with betting options, free spin buy variations, and lots of in-session moments to chase.

While the bet line approach in the previous two games never felt restrictive, the move to ways suits Razor Ways nicely. Push Gaming pairs that with an unlockable grid, which helps build a stronger snowball effect when things start rolling. Notably, the absence of the Mystery symbol stack Nudge and Reveal feature doesn’t sting as much as expected. That’s because Razor Ways delivers plenty of other hooks to keep players engaged, even without what used to be a key mechanic. And although the nudging stacks are gone, several familiar elements still return, including Razor Reveal, Instant Prize wins, and more. This time, they sit alongside ways, an expanding grid, and a level-up bonus that triggers a fixed number of free spins.

With a win cap of 25,000x the bet, Razor Ways isn’t the kind of sequel that massively raises the ceiling. Combined with the slightly lower volatility and the missing nudging multiplier, some of the most extreme Razor devotees may grumble. Still, Razor Ways has more than enough happening to excite dedicated Razor fans, while also being approachable for players discovering the series for the first time.
