If there’s one battle-scarred Vietnam vet you really shouldn’t provoke, it’s the perpetually shirtless, brooding John Rambo—the man who just wanted to be left in peace, yet always ends up taking on villains wherever they appear.

Rambo is a hugely successful franchise that has expanded into comics, books, a tv series, video games, and of course the films—even including a Bollywood adaptation. And this isn’t even his first time showing up in online gaming. Now John Rambo is back to blowing things up on the reels, thanks to a partnership between Stakelogic and media brand rights entity Skyrocket Entertainment. Let’s see what survives once the smoke clears.

Stakelogic’s Rambo is a 5 reel, 20 payline operation set deep in the bush in an undisclosed location. Given John’s background, it could be Vietnam, or maybe South America? It doesn’t really matter, but it suits the theme either way. The soundtrack does a solid job too, building tension like you’re inching through hostile territory. Visually, the backdrop leans cinematic, while the reels carry that slightly cartoonish/Rockstar Games inspired vibe that the Expendables New Mission slots has.

Choosing your stake comes with a small twist due to Stakelogic’s Super Stake option. Regular bets run from 20 p/c up to $/€100 per spin—and that’s doubled if you switch on Super Stake, which we explain below. The math model here sits at medium to high volatility, with a default RTP of 96.08%. There’s also a 94.08% version available, so it’s worth checking the paytable.

As for the symbols, the first thought might be, “who’s that supposed to be?” Unfortunately, the Rambo premium icon doesn’t look much like the real deal. It’s as if Stakelogic started building a generic action-hero slot, then got told to make it a Rambo game, but kept the original character art. Sure, there’s a headband and you can kind of spot the signature pout, but still—Rambo?

That said, ‘Rambo’ pays a hefty 100x the stake for five across a line. He also pays from just two on a line, while the other symbols need at least three. The remaining icons, in descending order, are an ammo box, a grenade, arrows, a machete (bloodied), and A-10 royals peppered with bullet holes. Rounding out the set is the standard wild, which pays the same as the Rambo symbol and substitutes for all symbols except scatters.

Rambo: Features

The features are the main attraction, starting with Stakelogic’s trademarked Super Stake bet option. Turning it on doubles your stake to unlock extra wilds and introduce explosive wilds on reels 2-4. In addition, 2 scatters symbols are added to reels 1 and 2. If 2-4 scatters land in this mode, Super Stake Respins are triggered until 5 scatters appear, or until no additional scatters land.

The special wilds are a nice touch, made up of multiplier wilds and explosive wilds. Explosive wilds take a little unpacking. When they land as a TNT detonator, they detonate to cover the entire reel and grant 3 free respins. With each respin, the stack drops down one row until it falls off the grid. Explosive wilds can explode to either become standard wilds in the base game or multiplier wilds during free spins.

Watch out for the hooded cobra poised to strike—though here it’s the scatter and your route into the bonus. Landing 3, 4, or 5 snakes awards 10, 20, or 50 free spins respectively. Oddly, aside from being free, the free spins don’t add a lot of new action beyond the possibility of landing multiplier wilds—which doesn’t appear to occur particularly often.

Multiplier wilds work as normal substitutes while adding a multiplier of x2, x3, or x4. If more than one multiplier wild is visible, their multipliers are added together. On top of that, free spins may be retriggered under the same conditions listed above.

Finally, as you’d expect, Stakelogic has included a gamble feature. It’s the usual blind card-guess where you can potentially double, quadruple, or lose everything by selecting the correct colour or suit.

Rambo: Verdict

‘I’m your worst nightmare’ is one of John Rambo’s more iconic lines from a series not exactly celebrated for its dialogue. Luckily, Rambo the slot isn’t a nightmare—but it doesn’t exactly blow the doors off either. It lands in a safe middle zone: entertaining enough in the moment, but not especially distinctive. As a branded slot, it should pull in some interest, though it doesn’t feel like the kind of game players will keep coming back to for repeated punishment.

The best moments come from landing Sly symbols alongside wild multipliers during the free spins. Interestingly, the very first test spin delivered five scatters and the full 50 free spins, which was a fantastic opening. Then almost nothing happened until a cluster of Rambos arrived at the same time as a stack of wild multipliers, producing some very respectable returns. It never quite hit those peaks again during the session, but it did show that Rambo can deliver, to a point, when it decides to. At full tilt, Rambo’s maximum potential reaches 1,200 times your total stake.

Overall, Rambo was enjoyable enough. Still, something holds it back from being genuinely great. It’s hard to pinpoint; maybe it’s that the experience feels a bit too generic and not particularly Rambo-ish.
