Popeye: Slot Overview
Stockholm-based outfit Lady Luck Games isn’t a developer we bump into all that often. The last time it really popped up for us was with Spinjoy Society Megaways, which drew attention largely thanks to the link with Big Time Gaming’s well-known grid mechanic. This time around we get… Popeye—and honestly, it’s Popeye, so of course it stands out. He’s been downing spinach for ages to power up, scrapping with Bluto, and rescuing his beloved Olive Oyl. Given how famous the cartoon is, it’s no shock that Lady Luck Games’ Popeye isn’t the first branded online slot to use the Sailor Man. Even so, he’s not exactly a character you see on the reels every day, which definitely made this one intriguing.
Early impressions were positive and only pushed that curiosity higher. Lady Luck Games has built a good-looking setting for Popeye the Sailor Man to call home and show off in a casino format. The action sits by the docks, close to the water, in a cosy, wood-heavy little port town. If you grew up with classic Popeye cartoons, Popeye the slot can easily trigger those Saturday morning/after-school TV vibes. Put simply, Popeye looks the part, and fans of the big-forearmed sailor should feel right at home. The soundtrack is a bit underwhelming, though—especially when you compare it to the iconic Popeye theme.

To get things moving, players can choose a stake of 10 p/c to $/€100 per paid round. It’s also fair to say Popeye isn’t some huge, feature-stacked monster, instead offering fairly straightforward gameplay and a medium volatile math model. With a theoretical return of 96.1% (with lower models available), Popeye runs on a 5-reel, 3-row layout and uses 20 fixed paylines for forming wins.
Symbol-wise, the lower payouts come from J to A card royals framed with rope, while the premium icons include J. Wellington Wimpy ready to tuck into his favourite meal, Bluto, Olive Oyl, and Popeye the Sailor Man hoisting a huge barbell—one-handed, no less. A 5-of-a-kind win returns 1.8 to 2.4 times the bet on low symbols and 6 to 30 times the bet on the higher ones. Spinach can Wilds appear on all five reels too. Wilds substitute for any other paying symbol to help finish winning lines, and a line of five wilds pays 100x the bet.
Popeye: Slot Features

Crack open the can and you’ll find features including reel multipliers, free spins, a coin-driven bonus game, and a gamble option.
Reel Multipliers
Every reel in Popeye comes with its own multiplier, shown clearly above the reel. Multiplier symbols increase the reel multiplier when they land, and wilds gain the multiplier when they appear. Reel multipliers begin at x2, and the values reset between paid spins.
Bonus Game
When coin symbols land, there’s a chance in the base game that they flip to create a new coin. Once 5 or more coins are visible in the base game or during free spins, the bonus game is triggered. In the bonus game, players receive 3 spins. Each time a new symbol lands, the spin counter returns to 3. If a reel gets filled with coins, those coins are removed and their values are awarded—after being multiplied by the reel multiplier. When the round ends and spins run out, any coins still on screen pay their values, but no multiplier is applied.
Free Spins
Hitting 3 free spins symbols on reels 1, 3, and 5 starts the free spins feature. A bottle spins to grant 10, 12, or 15 free spins. During free spins, coins always flip. Other than that, the free spins round plays much like the base game.
Gamble & Bonus Buy
After a spin, once any activated features have finished, players can choose to gamble their winnings. Correctly selecting a card colour doubles the prize, while picking the right suit boosts it to four times. Finally, if you’d rather purchase a feature, Popeye includes 3 options: 10 free spins, 15 free spins, or the bonus game for 35x, 60x, or 20x the bet, respectively.

Popeye: Slot Verdict
It’s pretty wild to think that, at the time of writing, Popeye the Sailor Man is edging close to 100 years old—well, not too far off the milestone anyway. Across all that time, he’s entertained plenty of people, so it makes sense that some Popeye fans will be eager to see the spinach-muncher take a turn on the reels. And while Popeye is famous for going big—big muscles, big strength, big laughs—Popeye the slot can feel a touch underpowered in places.
From a win-potential angle, Popeye does hold up, with a top end of over 5,000x the bet across all RTP models. Visually it’s also well done, capturing a lot of the cartoon’s charm. On that front, anyone who enjoyed watching Popeye power up, save Olive Oyl, and outsmart Bluto should get a bit of enjoyment from Popeye the slot. It’s a shame the core gameplay side feels somewhat light. Reel multipliers do the job, but it’s a little strange that you need a multiplier symbol and a wild symbol to land on the same reel at the same time to really take advantage of an improved reel multiplier. The coin bonus round isn’t especially thrilling either. Yes, solid wins are possible in theory, but if you set the theme aside, the remaining package can feel a bit sparse.
All told, Popeye, the slot comes across as somewhat limited—at least in terms of what it offers as an online slot. There’s still room for a few grins, and maybe even a nice wave of nostalgia if you grew up watching Popeye and friends getting into trouble on TV. Once that nostalgia wears off, though, if you’re looking for something with more punch, Popeye’s feature set could have used the online slot equivalent of downing a few extra cans of spinach.
