Plunderin’ Pirates Hold & Win: Slot Overview
Much like a tropical squall that refuses to die down, iSoftBet’s Hold & Win line sails back into port, this time with a privateer twist in Plunderin’ Pirates Hold & Win. The name says it all: you team up with a bearded buccaneer, spin away in a high-seas setting, and aim to unleash the main streak respin bonus round. It’s not a bare-bones hold & win, either, as iSoftBet have packed in several Booty Boosters to keep things lively. Still, don’t expect a huge leap in originality. Anyone who’s kept up with iSoftBet’s Hold & Win releases will recognise plenty of the add-ons from Gold Digger. If you haven’t, then it’s time to raise the sails and get moving.
Visually, Plunderin’ Pirates is a pretty solid-looking slot. It avoids going full cartoon, but it also doesn’t dive into the overly bleak style pirate games can lean toward. Instead, iSoftBet strikes a balance, blending a touch of playful with a touch of grit into something easy on the eyes. The demo we tested didn’t feel fully complete, as the banjo-driven soundtrack seemed to be missing entirely. Given iSoftBet’s usual polish, that will likely be swapped for something more suitably piraty in the final version. Beyond that, Plunderin’ Pirates looks good without being spectacular, and it doesn’t noticeably fall short anywhere either—an observation that more or less fits the whole game.
Now for the core specs, beginning with the 5-reel, 3-row layout where standard payouts land across 20 fixed paylines. Wins require at least three matching symbols, starting from the leftmost reel. Volatility sits around the medium mark, and the theoretical return is roughly 96%. Plunderin’ Pirates can be played on any device, with stakes ranging from 20 p/c to $/€20 per paid spin.
As for the paytable, the base game includes eight regular paying symbols, alongside wilds and gold coins. The pay symbols are divided between low-value J-A cards and higher-paying parrots, monkeys, lady pirates, and male pirates. The payouts aren’t particularly impressive, especially given there are only 10 paylines. Hitting five premium symbols, for instance, returns 4x to 10x the stake. Wilds don’t pay by themselves, but they can replace any symbol except gold coins.
Plunderin’ Pirates Hold & Win: Slot Features
Plunderin’ Respins is where players are most likely to land the larger wins in Plunderin’ Pirates, and it comes loaded with Booty Booster modifiers. In the base game, Explosive Modifiers are included to shake up the usual spin cycle.
Explosive Modifiers
On regular spins, the captain at the side of the screen can randomly lob bombs onto the reels, which transforming symbols. Depending on what he throws, bombs can add 3-5 wilds, upgrade all low paying symbols into a high-paying symbol, or drop 1-3 gold coins to help set off the bonus feature.
Plunderin’ Respins
Hitting at least 5 gold coin symbols in the base game activates the Plunderin’ Respins feature and grants 3 respins. During Plunderin’ Respins, any additional gold coin symbols that appear lock to the reels and the respin counter is restored to 3. The feature ends when all respins are spent or every available spot is filled. At that point, the coin values shown are awarded. Gold coin values can range from 1x to 100x the bet.
Along with gold coins, coins of other colours can also land. When they do, each one changes the round in a specific way:
- Silver coins – gather the values from any gold coin symbol in view and open more positions for coins.
- Green coins – boost the value of any neighbouring coins, linked horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
- Blue coins – unlocks up to 3 extra rows.
- Purple coins – collects the values from any gold or silver coins in view and opens more positions for coins.
Plunderin’ Pirates Hold & Win: Slot Verdict
Unless pirates are truly your thing, there’s not a great deal about Plunderin’ Pirates that stands out as must-play. The mechanics are fine, the base game modifiers are fine, and the respin bonus round is—again—fine. It all works smoothly, just without much spark. The presentation is pleasant, though the visuals arguably deserve more credit than they get because so much else feels middle-of-the-road. Looks alone rarely justify spinning—unless, as mentioned, pirates are your obsession.
There also isn’t much more to say about how it plays beyond what’s already covered in the features section, which speaks to how routine the experience is. iSoftBet struck gold with Gold Digger, which shares a lot of DNA with this one, but a few changes cost Plunderin’ Pirates some points. Those include cutting the paylines in half and reducing symbol payouts. Another drawback is the missing multiplier in the streak respin bonus, which helped dial up excitement in Gold Digger. Even so, plenty will feel familiar. The Explosive modifiers in the base game, for example, mirror what Gus threw onto the reels in Gold Digger.
The problem with Plunderin’ Pirates isn’t simply that it resembles Gold Digger. The theme and adjustments do enough to separate them. The bigger issue is that Plunderin’ Pirates doesn’t feel like a step forward for iSoftBet’s Hold & Win catalogue, or an upgrade over the earlier entry—if anything, it goes the other way. As hinted, Plunderin’ Pirates may still be worth a look if you enjoy hold & wins and you’re a committed pirate fan. Otherwise, there’s not much here to inspire repeated virtual voyages.
