Plataea Slot (WMS): Overview

Industry veteran WMS has brought its older Plataea slot forward, converting it from the now-dated Flash build to Html5. Plataea is also found as a land-based cabinet, and in practice it’s essentially a reskin of the punishing Hearts of Venice, this time wrapped in Ancient Greek styling. So the outcome should be predictable… or is it? Maybe the weight of that historic setting injects enough tension to make Plataea worth a look.

Early spins in Plataea felt a touch less brutal than they did in Hearts of Venice. The theme helps a lot, dialing back the cheesiness by several steps, which is welcome. Visually it’s an upgrade too, and the seaside temple backdrop is pleasant enough. One thing that still needs asking (again): why is there a strip of fire burning across the bottom of the screen? It doesn’t connect to the theme, it isn’t tied to any feature or mechanic, and it’s completely baffling. The first time it showed up you could blame a coding glitch. But it’s here again, and this time it looks intentional. Anyway—on to the betting. Players can spin from 40 p/c up to King Leonidas territory at $/€100 per spin. Press spin and the 5 reel, 4 row layout gets rolling.

Plataea runs on 50 fixed paylines, with the paytable divided into three bands: low, mid, and premium. Low symbols include a silver coin, a gold coin, a black and gold pot, and the top of a column. The mids are a sword and scabbard, a helm, spears and shield, and a trireme. The premium pair is a hoplite warrior and an Ancient Greek woman. It’s not entirely clear who she’s meant to be—maybe a priestess or a goddess? Either way she pays best, and landing 5 awards 5 times the total bet. The wild is a close-up of eyes behind a helmet; it appears on reels 2, 3, 4, and 5 and substitutes for any regular paying symbol. When it completes a win, there’s a nice touch of animation as the helmet comes off.

The same math model returns with a small tweak. Possibly to better fit today’s market—hit hard by fresh regulation—WMS has nudged the RTP down to 96.079%, while keeping the medium/high volatility intact.

Plataea Slot (WMS): Features

Free spins feature

Anyone who’s suffered through Hearts of Venice will already know the drill, because the feature set is identical—just with a few visual tweaks to match the Greek theme. First up is the Shield Mystery Symbol. When these mystery symbols marked with a ‘V’ land, they all transform into the same standard symbol. Shields can change into any symbol except the wild or the scatter.

If reel one lands stacked with Shield symbols, it activates Hot Hot Super Respin Mode and grants 2 respins. The Shields on reel 1 stay locked, and any wilds or shields on the other reels are held as well, while all remaining reels and positions respin. Any new shields or wilds that appear are also locked for the second respin. After the second respin ends, every shield converts to the same common symbol and any wins are paid.

The temple icon acts as the scatter and can appear on reels 1, 3, and 5. With 3 in view, players receive 10 Free Spins. During free spins, additional shield and wild symbols are added to the reels to boost the chances of landing wins. Hot Hot Super Respin Mode can also trigger during the feature, and getting 3 scatters in view adds 10 extra free spins to prolong the round.

Plataea Slot (WMS): Verdict

In fairness, Plataea does edge out Hearts of Venice slightly, even with the small RTP reduction. The core play hasn’t changed, but the Ancient Greek presentation goes down easier than the other game’s overly sweet romance theme. It’s still not especially entertaining, but at least it doesn’t leave you raging by the time you’re done. Under the hood, though, it’s basically the same package as before, which means it inherits the same complaints Hearts of Venice drew. That includes the obvious issues—dated visuals and a painfully slow tempo—as well as the smaller irritations. The fire element had a bit of character the first time; seeing it repeat the exact same act here just feels distracting and out of place. And then there’s the payout side: at maximum, a screen packed with the top symbol returns only 250 times the stake. Not exactly the kind of reward that makes gearing up for war feel worthwhile.

So, to circle back to the opening point: no, Plataea isn’t really a strong pick unless you’re a dedicated fan of the original. Considering how crowded and popular the Ancient Greek slot space is, there are plenty of superior alternatives. It’s difficult to recommend Plataea even to the most die-hard Ancient Greece enthusiast. Credit to WMS for leaning into a fairly distinctive concept to power the slot, but it’s a shame the rest of the experience is about as enjoyable as standing in a line while your phone dies.
