Our Days (Microgaming): Review

When it comes to awful slots—and we don’t mean merely mediocre, but truly grotesque—an oddly large share of the worst releases in recent years have carried Microgaming’s approval and come out via its partner studios. At this point, even Microgaming itself seems to have forgotten how to produce a genuinely solid slot, which has helped push the brand into irrelevance while competitors have surged ahead.

In an era where flimsy Microgaming titles have sadly become commonplace, this newest entry, Our Days, makes many dreadful slots look as refined as the polished floors of Versailles. Built with 5 reels and 243 ways to win, it’s “playable” only in the loosest sense—useful mainly if you’re stuck somewhere with few or no alternatives. A few details suggest the game may have been designed with the Asian market in mind, and if so, the rather corny storyline might be a cultural fit that simply doesn’t translate well elsewhere. Either way, Our Days is, comparatively speaking, a low variance, low-risk title with a bet range from 30 cents up to an eye-watering 1,800€ per spin.

On the visual side, it leans into a Japanese Anime style and seems centered on teenage romance. The narrative is presented through soft artwork and mellow music, aiming for an innocent, young-love vibe, though it ultimately feels bland and generic. The reels feature low-value items like love notes, scarves, diaries, jars full of stars, and lunch boxes. Higher-value symbols are the characters Joy, Nana, Lolita, Amber and Juliet, with Juliet paying the most—worth 3 times your stake for 5 on a full payline. The Our Days logo acts as the wild symbol and, oddly, appears only in the base game. The wild matches the value of the top regular symbol.

Any time you hit a winning combination, the Respin feature triggers. When it does, every symbol involved in the win is locked in place, while reels that don’t contain winning symbols respin—and they’ll keep respinning for as long as you continue to land wins.

There’s also a Free Spins round, activated by landing 3 or more scatters at once anywhere on the reels—3, 4 or 5 scatters award 8, 10 or 12 free spins respectively. During this mode, all low-value symbols are removed, which should translate into larger payouts and notably improved chances of winning. The Respin feature also remains active here. In theory, you can win up to 729 times your stake per spin by landing a full screen of the top symbol, although in practice you’ll often be stuck grinding through dreary spins that deliver a string of tiny wins.

Our Days (Microgaming): Verdict

To be blunt, Our Days is among the most monotonous slots we’ve had to sit through, and it offers very little to recommend it. The theme may be intended to resonate in Asia (though we’re not convinced), but for many Europeans it will likely feel strange and overly cheesy. On top of that, the engine behaves oddly: the Respin feature won’t respin losing tiles if they sit on the same reels as winning tiles.

All in all, it’s an extremely plain, lifeless and uninteresting slot with no real thrill—payouts feel illogical, the respins are painful to watch, and the visuals are thoroughly uninspired. It genuinely gives the impression of being made by people completely out of touch with the gambling community. At the time of writing, we don’t know which of Microgaming’s partners is behind this mess, and we have no desire to find out. That Microgaming lets games like this through its quality control is bad enough.
