Octo Attack: Slot Overview
Octopuses, or octopi, are famously capable of untying knots, working out puzzles, and even slipping out of aquariums, which makes it pretty clear they’re no ordinary sea creatures. A fun fact is that roughly two-thirds of their neurons sit in their arms rather than in their head—and, as everyone knows, they have eight of those. With that in mind, it’s not too hard to imagine a far-off world in the endless void where octopus beings have climbed to the top of the food chain and become the dominant species on their planet. Maybe it’s a place where octo-scientists study bipedal primates in labs and get excited by the occasional spark of intelligence. And one day, who knows, perhaps a fleet of octo-ships will arrive at Earth—whether for peace or war is something we’ll have to wait and see.
That idea leads neatly into the online slot Octo Attack, headlined by an eight-armed character named Otto the Octopus. Otto is a creation of Hacksaw Gaming, and the studio drops the cephalopod into a mostly monochrome setting of ‘trash, dumpsters, waste’, with only the odd splash of colour here and there. Otto is hard to miss: he’s the blue, angry-looking guy hanging around the 6-reel, 5-row playfield, which is packed with a strange mix of miscellaneous objects. Octo Attack is unusual overall, but it’s the good kind of unusual—Hacksaw Gaming’s talent for pulling together seemingly random elements, then wrapping them in punk-rock, pop art-style irreverence to produce something très cool.

When 5 or more matching symbols land and connect vertically and/or horizontally, they form a winning cluster. Hacksaw lists Octo Attack’s volatility as 3 out of 5, i.e. medium, and the RTP is 96.27%. At least, that’s the return figure when wagering 10 c to $/€100 per spin, though the value can differ when using the bonus buy.
The black and grey hook, bolt, speech bubble, box, and heart act as Octo Attack’s low-paying symbols, while the coloured fish, beverage, mushroom, ice cream, and shark make up the higher pays. Clusters of five-of-a-kind return 0.1 to 1 times the bet, while clusters of 26+ award 100 to 500 times the bet. Wild symbols substitute for all regular paytable symbols. Wild symbols can also land carrying multiplier values of x1 to x10.
Octo Attack: Slot Features

Normally they’d be a nuisance, but in Octo Attack, Ink Stains are exactly what you want to see. Whenever a win occurs, after the result is checked, the winning symbols are removed and fresh symbols fall in to fill the gaps. Those winning spots are also marked with Ink Stains. Ink Stains stay in place until they’re used by the Tenta-Grab mechanic. Ink Stains are also cleared away between base game spins.
Eye of Otto and the Tenta-Grab Mechanic
The Eye of Otto symbol triggers the Tenta-Grab mechanic when it lands while Ink Stains are present on the grid. After activation, the Tenta-Grab mechanic selects one random symbol on the grid and replaces every Ink Stained position—along with itself—with the selected symbol. The Tenta-Grab can pick low symbols, high symbols, FS symbols, wilds, or wild multiplier symbols. If it grabs a wild or wild multiplier symbol, the replaced positions become either wilds or wild multipliers with values that may be higher or lower than the grabbed symbol.
Eighth Arm Is The Charm
This feature starts when at least 3 regular FS symbols land simultaneously in the base game. The number of triggering FS symbols determines how many free spins you receive. During the bonus, Ink Stains are not removed between spins until they have been used through the Tenta-Grab feature. Each time 3 regular FS symbols land together, +1 free spin is added.
Give Me Eight!
This feature is activated by landing at least 3 epic FS symbols at the same time in the base game. The number of triggering epic FS symbols equals the number of free spins awarded. As with the other bonus, Ink Stains are not removed between spins until they have been used via the Tenta-Grab feature. The difference is that the Tenta-Grab only grabs wilds or wild multiplier symbols. For every set of 3 epic FS symbols that land together, +1 free spin is granted.
Bonus Buy
Octo Attack’s bonus buy section includes the following:
- BonusHunt FeatureSpins – each spin is 5x more likely to trigger a bonus for 3x the bet.
- Tentacular FeatureSpins – each spin guarantees at least 1 win, and 1 landed Eye of Otto symbol for 50x the bet.
- Eighth Arm Is The Charm – 100x the bet.
- Give Me Eight – 300x the bet. The Tenta-Grab grabs only wilds, wild multipliers, or FS symbols.

Octo Attack: Slot Verdict
Hacksaw Gaming really can be a clever bunch. They’re great at tossing together a strangely chosen set of elements and turning it into a wickedly entertaining slot. Not every release follows that approach, of course—some are straightforward. Wanted Dead or a Wild is clearly a Western, Stormforged leans into Norse themes, Rotten goes full horror, and so on. But then there are the, let’s say, oddball collection slots that mash up an eccentric mix of objects, characters, and ideas in one place—Chaos Crew 2, RIP City, Beam Boys, and similar titles. Octo Attack fits that mould perfectly: limited in colour palette, but big on engaging gameplay.
Otto plays a huge role in what makes Octo Attack shine. He’s essential, because while it’s fine to smear the grid with Ink Stains, it’s only when an Eye of Otto symbol lands that the real feature action kicks off. That said, the big moment can technically happen at any time, since Octo Attack’s 10,000x the bet max win potential is available in every game mode. Still, as usual, the free spins are the main attraction—especially the super free spins stage, Give Me Eight. In Give Me Eight, Ink Stains remain on the reels until they’re consumed by a Tenta-Grab trigger, and pay symbols won’t be selected. It’s easy to see how powerful it can be in a cluster-pay game when a large part of the grid is converted into wild symbols—especially once you add the chance of landing wild multipliers too.
It’s intense in the best way, and Octo Attack can be an absolute riot when everything clicks. Like stumbling on the perfect thrift-shop outfit you can’t wait to show off, Octo Attack makes its quirky mix of thematic objects, character, and a touch of narrative come together brilliantly—backed up by a seriously strong set of features.
