Nitropolis 4: Slot Overview

In part three, the dogs, rats, and cats ditched the city for a toxic stretch of coastline, but in Nitropolis 4 the gang are back on the job. Their “work” seems to involve offshore resource extraction—maybe hauling up the green Nitro that powers their vehicles. Hard to say for sure, but it gives the studio room to push the dystopian look further and set the critters loose in a fresh environment. Sound has also been a big reason the series hits so well, and Nitropolis 4 keeps that streak alive with a full-on collision of bleeps, voice lines, and heavy industrial beats that wouldn’t feel out of place in something Trent Reznor or Rob Zombie might put together. Put it all in the blender and you’ve got the stage ready for another round of Nitro-branded chaos. Now, onto the gameplay.

Before that, a few essentials. You can either wager 20 p/c to $/€50 per spin or switch on the X-iter and use one of the five feature buy choices available there. Whichever route you take, expect a highly volatile ride with a theoretical return of 94%. Press spin and the grid begins in its standard form: 6-reels with 4 symbols on each, giving 4,096 ways to win. That said, Nitro Reels and the broader expanding-reel behaviour can rapidly smash those figures—especially the ways count—as earlier titles have already shown.

Most of the time, Nitropolis 4 pays from left to right starting at reel one, but with the Both Ways feature switched on, wins can also land right to left beginning from reel six. For regular pay symbols, you’ll need at least three to form a winning way. Low symbols are J-A card ranks; the middle tier is made up of four crew logos; and the top tier features four character icons. A six-of-a-kind pays 0.3x for the royals, 0.8-1x the bet for the logos, or 1.25 to 3 times the stake for a premium hit. The spiked mine tile acts as the wild and can appear on all six reels. Wilds replace any paying symbol and, when creating wild wins, pay the same as the highest-value symbol.

Nitropolis 4: Slot Features

Nitro Reels occupy two positions on the grid and can land on any reel. Each Nitro Reel holds 4, 6, 8, 10, or 12 regular-sized payout symbols. Big Nitro Reels take up six positions and include 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 2×2 payout symbols.

Nitro Multiplier

Nitro Multipliers also take up two positions, but they count as one symbol, and they multiply all wins currently visible. Possible values are x4, x6, x8, x10, or x12, and if more than one is showing, the multipliers combine multiplicatively.

Nitro Booster

Above the grid sit two displays that can award Nitro Booster modifiers. There are 8 possible effects. These are:

• Redrop – when there are no more wins, Bonus symbols and Nitro Reels are held while all other symbols are replaced with new ones.
• Both Ways – wins pay both ways on the grid.
• Garbage Collect – random symbols are removed from the grid, causing an Avalanche.
• Max Rows – the grid is expanded to its full 8-row height.
• Nitro Appear – a random-sized Nitro Reel is placed on the board.
• Nitro Wild – a Nitro Reel already in view will be filled with wilds. If no Nitro Reel exists, this feature is held till one appears or the game round ends.
• Nitro Upgrade – a Nitro Reel in view has its value increased. If no Nitro Reel exists, this feature is held till one appears or the game round ends.
• Nitro Match – an existing Nitro Reel is matched to another symbol in view to create a win. If a winning match is not possible, the chosen Nitro Reel will be matched with an adjacent Nitro Reel; if that’s not possible, it will be matched with the highest adjacent symbol. If no Nitro Reel exists, this feature is held till one appears or the game round ends.

Bonus Game

Hitting 3, 4, 5, or 6 bonus symbols grants 8, 12, 16, or 20 free spins—both in the base game and while free spins are already running. In free spins, Nitro Reels are sticky until the feature finishes. In addition, every win increases the safety level by one row, and the following free spin fills the grid up to the current safety level, to a maximum of 8 rows. If one of the triggering symbols is a Super Bonus symbol, the Super Bonus Game is triggered instead. In that mode, Max Rows and Both Ways is always active.

Nitropolis 4: Slot Verdict

Reaching a trilogy is impressive; taking a series to a fourth instalment (and beyond) shows real durability, and Nitropolis 4 underlines why this line remains so popular. The first big draw is the deeply immersive setting—ELK Studios keeps cranking up the production with each release, making the Nitropolis world feel like it’s spilling off the screen. A dystopia run by animals might sound strange on paper, but it adds humour and gives the studio plenty of room to build an engaging, full-sensory experience. All of that is back in Nitropolis 4, which pulls players in—willing or not—just as effectively as the first three entries.

Once you’re in, there’s no shortage of ways the game keeps things interesting. The jump from part 3 to part 4 isn’t as dramatic as the leap from Nitropolis 2 to part 3 in many respects, but there’s still clear forward movement. It’s similar to how Black River Gold felt like it evolved through more subtle mechanical refinements rather than huge step changes. And speaking of Kane, the two well-known series seem to be edging closer in some respects, especially with the reel expansion/safety level parallels, even though they differ a lot elsewhere. For example, the chaos factor in Nitropolis can be extreme, with stacks of modifiers, Avalanches, and an almost absurd number of potential ways to win thanks to Nitro Reels. If you’re into huge figures, getting the calculator out to estimate Nitropolis’ theoretical limits will be right up your alley. If ELK Studios keeps pushing it, we may need Knuth’s up-arrow notation just to write the numbers down.

What’s much simpler to pin down is the RTP, which is arguably the game’s biggest letdown—an opinion that’s become fairly common with ELK Studios releases in recent times. If that doesn’t bother you, though, and you’re craving some reel-driven destruction, then hold on tight: Nitropolis 4 serves up the same kind of havoc the series is known for.
